now, i'v heard alot of arguments over items. positive; 'items are a big part of the game' negative; 'items are to random' and neutral 'items are a big part of the game, but they are random' I usualy take the neutral route, putting items on low or very low. however, dun duh duh dun duhhhhhhhhh! i'v come up with a solution! (or 4(and a 1/2))

1 spawn points: you all know what these are, the places where items spawn. randomly. now there are a few things you can do with these. for one, you can place them. infact, you could place them in places that aid low tiers, hmm? there could also be timers, above each box (part 2) so the spawning isn't random. cool, eh?

2 tetris: your probably going "wtf tetris?" but I didn't think of this, kirbykid did in the blog (i'll post a link later) so check that out. however, each box could be a different colour to represent a different spawn point, and there could be spawn timers (as shown above) not much to say, you'll get it more when I post the link.

3 item messing: now, this is more about items in general. my idea was that you could ajust the knockback, damage, and throw speed to make it more balanced, but maybe not (minigame: think of the coolest combo of these with any item) also, you could change the spawn likelyness of each item, each with a default likelyness.
3 1/2: also, you could put smash balls on a timer, which, considering FS's are balanced, would make them totaly tourny legal.

4 order!: basicly, you pick certain items, then put them in a spawn order, thus eliminating all randomness. yeh. you could even do this for each spawn points. awesome.

put all these together, and you have the perfect tournament legal items. I hope you enjoyed my first topic (2nd if you want to get tecnical) and dont forget about the minigame!
(on a side note, containers should be able to be turned off, and as reference, no I have never been to a tounament
farewell

I think items are amazing and if you can't dodge a pokeball flying at you you should probably stop playing. But hey, that's just me.

The main thing with item banning was the fact that you could be doing an fsmash just to have an exploding crate or capsule end up in your face.

xD Items are meant to be there. Hell it was sad seeing people at E For All just dumping items off the stage rather than fight. I mean, people were like "Dude, can we turn items off olol" Those are the people that get to me

are you sure they weren;t slightly experienced players trying to level the field for their opponents?? i can think of times when i've thrown countless items away in a home match just because using them myself would be a short match while allowing my little brother to simply use the home run bat... thats not exactly a fair handi cap :chuckle:

in tourney's... get back to ya later
for a grudge match no way
but for the fun of it hells yes

People who play without items now have played with items for a long period of time but decided without items is better, yet people like you who complain about lack of items probably have not even tried to play seriously without items and terribly made stages.

no ones tried the minigame? that makes me a sad, err, angel.
I had a feeling this would turn into a argument about items, thats fine, im not saying you have to play with items, im just trying to make them less random and unfair.
and can someone give, like, a reveiw or something? I wrote this to see if I could write a topic, so I want to see how I did. thanks.

The entire point of an Item is to give a player an advantage they otherwise wouldn't have. Thats what they are there for. So while I love items and almost always have them on, they do not belong in the tournament scene. It's not just the randomness it give it's advantage. Sure a heart could spawn equally between to evenly matched players, but who gets it will likely decide the match.

The items make things random, and that's a good thing. :)
(Though, I do turn off the Poison Mushroom and Mr. Saturn items)

I dont get how ppl can defend items. Im a real casual gamer for smash and within a week i had turned off items. i'd never been to a tourney (didn't even know they existed) but it was clear that they were far too unbalanced and random. I also dont understand my fellow casuals hateing the WD. i learned it in like 1:30 its not hard at all. i did that cuz i had easily reaced my peak without ATs so i went online to learn new ones. its all just the common proression of games, at first u think gimmics like items are fun but soon turn them off to get to the core of the game, then u go online to learn the not so obvious skills. i do this with every game

What do you mean by you reached your peak without AT's? They weren't even in Melee.

People are flaming you like you are a scrub or something, just because he likes items does not make him one of those people here that don't listen to logic and tell "tourney***es" how to play

Anyways, back to the real topic!

Yes, your idea would really help balance items. But off is still the way to go, I think even the weak, weak items are overpowered on characters that revolve around camping. But even if it was two really agressive players playing, the one who got the item would still have an advantage, albiet a small one, it is one he didn't earn, he got spawned into. I think items should stay off, while I am for giving them a chance, I really don't think that they have one.

Only reason items aren't on in tournaments is because of Barrels/Crates/Capsules that randomly explode.

Though so far evidence in Brawl point to that exploding Crates have the fire symbol on the side of it. Not so sure about Barrels and Capsules.

Items could be allowed in tournaments if you could just turn them off.

thank you. im actualy quite good at smash (well at least im ok) I don't care how you play, infact I actualy use l-cancel, short hop and waveland, and I am trying to edgehog, though I suck

hmm I guess your right, but if a certain item appeared at a certain point, every time, you could literaly build an entire mindgame around this one, single item. and if you did get spawned into it, its your opponents fault, as they could see the item coming, to the milisecond, on a certain spot, and they weren't good enough to stop you.
my guess is (if this is fetured in brawl) that it will be like the smash ball, it will (might) be in some tournaments, not in others.

 farewell

Even if you knew where items were going to appear, people would just start camping a spot when they know a good item is going to appear. The ones that would be fine for tourneys usually just end up getting thrown as a edge guard or something. Items add very little depth to the game. They're fun as hell, but fun doesn't always coincide with depth.
