Which explains the random Ice climbers update on friday. Sakurai hurried them in to show this picture

That pic could explain that were not getting anymore starters, so those 2 vets are secreted

Nah, I just think he's trying to stretch out the character updates. Both of those franchises need starter reps in my opinion, since they have confirmed items, which we usually don't see with secret franchises!

That 'random Ice Climbers update' was random because they're random updates.

....

This doesn't show the list of starters. And Falcon's always started, so it can't be 'again.'

Err, no. He as well as Ness were unlockable in SSB64.

Well, this theory seems plausible enough. There's probably some sort of order in those icons. I guess this shows the icons you can access before unlocking anyone else.

Hmm, actually now that I look at it again... there are some franchise icons missing. Judging by the scrollbar, there's one row at the beginning that's hidden... I guess Mother and F-Zero might go there.

Hey you're right! Zelda and Mario are Missing (lol Mario is Missing), could that mean 15 starting franchises, or am I over speculating?

EDIT: I've looked into this more, and it does seem 15 could be right! With all the characters we have confirmed on the site already, there are 12 different franchises. Then we get Ness and Falcon, that makes 14, and it seems Smashville is a starter stage, so it'd make sense to have a starter character too, so one AC character, that would make 15 different starting franchises, the Hidden 3 being Mario, Zelda, DK, Mother, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing.

You don't really need to stretch Animal Crossing into it - The Smash Brothers logo could be the first icon in the list. Did anyone check how the logos match up to the IDs on the website?

They didn't show us any stickers with the unrevealed characters, why would they show any icons with them if they haven't been revealed? It's obvious that the pic with the icons is a beta picture and they didn't want to upload all the character ones in fear that the entire cast would be revealed. Common sense people. ;/

I have to go with the "they just dropped Miis in place" theory.

Those are the same Miis they've been using from the start (in the Wii manual, too) and since they blurred out a friend code on one of the screens, we know they're not beyond editing the pictures.

Also, the three Pokemans from the Pokemans Trainer are in the lineup, even though there's only one actual character there.

Right behind you. seriously!
that probably isn't a final shot of those icons, so he's keeping the other starters secret, and probably there will be additional icons for unlockable characters that will be added in with the others after you unlock them.

yeah, and Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong.

but this could go either way. it just seems silly to not have Ness and Falcon as starters since they were starters in Melee...

that's not all of them. If you think that is all the avatars you are allowed, you can see a scroll bar to the right of the screen.

I don't see why you guys are so greedy. 18 starters already and you guys are clamouring for more. I think 18 is quite enough already, 20 starters? Thats 5 off of the maximum characters in Melee. I for one want alot of unlockable characters as I unlocked everything rather quickly in Melee and would enjoy some more time spent in this game.

What do you think?

Obviously it proves Mii's are playable starters.

Really, this doesn't tell us anything. Each screenshot that Sakurai has shown to us was carefully designed to not give any new information away. It's not like he was going to confirm Wi-Fi, Falcon and Earthbound/Mother in the same update.

............................you know how easy it is to photoshop them out?

Besides, would Sakurai ever show a character before it's announced on the site (and wasn't in a trailer).

Ok, well tell ya what, I really think that any characters, even unlockables will be all together, icons and all, they probably will just be insereted when you get them, it makes more sense that way than to have the starters separate from them unlockables, so this shot means not much....

Don't forget Snake's Kojima symbol, as seen in the Nintendo World trailer.

confirmed. Sending Supplies.
Dude, just think about this. Sakurai only put those characters because they're all the ones he announced and he doesn't want to say anymore until they're confirmed. And that's 19 characters, which is kind of an odd number to start with and probably not even half the full roster.

If a Mother character isn't a starter, then why would they show an item from it. That would be like if you could unlock items in Melee, and you got a Fire Emblem item to start with. Its not going to happen, this is just crazy speculation

Actually, there is a little bit of space in that scroll bar, which probably means theres a whole row of other symbols. Notice the Mushroom Kingdom symbol is absent as well as the smash logo. Its very possible that the earthbound, f-zero, DK and Zelda symbols could be, as well as many others.

****it. No.

That screenshot was staged deliberately to avoid showing characters not yet confirmed, even if they're on the edge of confirmation.

Stop reading into things!

this says nothing, I believe he did that because he didn't want to spoil anyone.

For all we know he could of put a Sonic symbol in there, or a Pikmin Symbol.

Maybe you unlock them. I think he just showed what he wanted to show.

Sakurai ALWAYS has something up his sleeve. I doubt that he'll stop updating characters until after the game's release.

I think that this whole "Ness and Captain Falcon are THE ONLY characters to not be starters just 'cause they are THE ONLY two characters (we know of) who are not be featured on that screenshot" theory is bogus.

I strongly believe Pokemon Trainer and Metaknight have more of a chance of being unlockable characters than Captain Falcon and Ness.

Is it just a coincidence that those avatars in the screenshot are the exact icons from the 'Characters' page on Smash Dojo (only the characters who have been added - note the absence of Snake)?

I find it hard to believe that all 19 characters on Smash Dojo so far are starting characters and every character added from now on will be an unlockable one.
