i have wonders about it's durability. mostly because i don't like the hold of the controller. I just sold my 3ds and intend to buy a XL because i think it fits better in my hands... I am a hardcore smash bros player (like 5 hours / day on PM) and i am really afraid that 3ds analog stick won't handle this extreme experience that is competitive smash bros and if it goes loose or break it'll be terrible to have to buy another 3ds.
Playing on D-pad isn't an option since it's terrible to perform quick precise moves with it ( perfect frame dumps, for example) ... i played brawl for a long time on the wii mote and i know what i'm saying when it comes to "you should run forward not jump" issues because of bad input read from the D-pad. Also it is really hard to short hop, tilt and fast fall which will decrease gameplay experience by a lot and probably condemn competitive D-pad possibility.
Best advice has been given by KAGE, the warrior. Basically don't hit your buttons. PRESS them. He only used 2 GC controllers his whole carreer. I think it's more about we getting used to softly do what we're used to do than "will this device resist my fierce hands ?"

I hope Nintendo comes out with some sort of control stick accessory to make it easer to use the control disk or whatever it is. And more durable too.

Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion (a 3DS game that severely plagiarizes SSB) was my first 3DS game 3 years ago and my 3DS is in great condition after over 60 hours playing that game (and a bunch of other games). It's not like brand new anymore but everything on my 3DS is functional.

I doubt that you'll have any problems to be honest.
I've spent 70+ Hours breeding Pokemon in X/Y(If you know anything about breeding you know what i'm talking about) and Haven't had many problems.

Play Kirby The Fighters or Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion. Then realize smash will handle the controls better than probably both but at least as good as kirby fighters. Then it'll feel pretty okay.

I know some people who throw their controllers to the ground in frustration after losing a tense game of Smash.

I pity and fear for their 3DS's.

My 3DS survived over hundreds of hours playing KI:U with it's circle pad and L button still working fine, I'm not worried.

The most work out my 3DS has gotten is definitely on its circle pad, mostly due to MH3U and Pokemon X.

I'm not too concerned but one thing I have noticed is that the grip on it has started to fade a bit slightly. Basically it's starting to feel a bit slippery, and this sort of bugs me. However, I have considered that maybe I've only noticed it during intense gaming sessions and it might have been finger-sweat. Not sure. This is obviously something that will be a concern when it comes to Smash with how important moving your character rapidly, and quickly, is going to be.

I picked up the circle pad pro when I picked up MH3U (long time after Pokemon X) and I can definitely notice a texture difference in how it feels, as in the Circle Pad Pro's stick has the default matte rubber grip feeling of a new 3DS, where as my stock circle pad feels a bit more "shiny" and slippery. It's slight, but I do notice it.

We'll have to see...

About my DS? Not at all. I will play the game on my 3DS.

But yeah, I avoid playing fighting games on handheld devices because I am afraid of ruining the buttons. I will make an exception for Smash, though. It can't be helped ;_;
