Input Lag Test

As Fox players, we are especially sensitive to input lag. While we can often feel the lag when switching between an HDTV and a regular TV, it's nice to have some hard data. Well, you can use Rock Band to measure this. Just do a calibration test, and it'll tell you how much lag (audio and video) you have. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but set your 360/PS3/Wii to 480i output.

My results:
Test 1 (using HDMI input, 1080p):
2ms audio lag
94 ms video lag

Test 2 (using composite input, 480i):
34ms audio lag
100 ms video lag

EDIT: I just redid my HDMI test, and it gave me 76 ms of video lag. Some variation, but that's still noticeable lag.

I knew I suspected something. That's a TENTH of a second (about 6 frames). I'm not using that TV for Smash anymore.

i noticed lag when i play on flat tv's, even small ones, it's the worst on my 40 inch plasma, so i like to play on regular tv's

I usually play on this big TV, so I didn't notice. But then I decided to play a little on my old little TV, and the I was just moving so much more fluidly and the game itself was smoother. I was making less technical mistakes, too. My friends aren't going to like the new tiny TV though.

EDIT: One of my friends is being stubborn and refuses to play Melee on a 13" TV. I told him that he plays Kirby so he doesn't count.

You can get pretty cheap tube TVs that are about 30 inch for ~ $100 at most thrift stores.

Tiny old TVs are legit. Not only do they not have lag, you can also carry them to class.

Not all HDTVs are that bad. Most smaller ones that I've callibrated on have between 26 and 48 ms input delay.

CRT Monitors/TVs are infinitely better than HD Tvs/Monitors. The only real use for HD Tvs are for pretty pictures, and to be honest, a good CRT is just fine. =\

As far as I'm concerned, if you want high-def, go to the movie theater. =\

I realize this is a bit of a Necro, but I had a related question I wanted to ask.

Does anyone if a Gamebridge adds on significant lag?
I use one both at home (on my desktop with a LCD monitor) and at my school (I use my laptop), and it felt really weird when I played on a CRT TV at a school event.

playing on through a gamebridge adds on immense amounts of delay. playing on an LCD monitor adds on some too.
