Some people here have nothing better to do than to wait impatiently.

Waiting impatiently causes people to go crazy.

I don't know why they do. I go to tournaments for fun now and then but most of the time I just mess around with friends. I used to play 3 stock, final destination no items but now I play random number of stock, any stage but icicle mountain since it's just annoying and all items on. It's alot funner the latter way.

It's an extremely fun game but I don't understand why some people take it so seriously. Good question.

No, I mean... why bother with tiers and all that nonsense? Can't you play the game for it is, a really fun game?

I mean, come on now. :/
We are playing the game for what it is: a really fun game.

Even with tiers and advanced techniques and items off.

Crazy.

This is a videogame forum. . . .

anyways, in all competitive things including videogames, people discuss strats and stuff. People do competitive stuff because it is fun. This forum was made for such things. The real question is why does it bother you so much?

Playing on a higher level is more fun than randomly mashing buttons.

“[The non-competitive players’] argument is basically that ignorantly mashing buttons with little regard to actual strategy is more ‘fun.’ Superficially, their argument does at least look valid, since often their games will be more ‘wet and wild’ than games between the experts, which are usually more controlled and refined. But any close examination will reveal that the experts are having a great deal of this ‘fun’ on a higher level than the scrub can even imagine. Throwing together some circus act of a win isn’t nearly as satisfying as reading your opponent’s mind to such a degree that you can counter his every move.”

What's the point of metaphysics and number theory? What's the point of linear analysis? What's the point of analyzing a video game? What's the point of sports? What's the point of art?

They're interesting.

Ugh, another one. People have fun playing the game competitively, that's why they play it like that. It's just like how some people like fooling around playing football (soccer), and some people like gettting good at it. Not the best exampl but still, people have fun with different things.

And schlepboogie, you're in a video game discussing forum. FAIL

Oh, now I see what you mean. Some people have fun on that level, is what you're saying. Okay. :urg:

Me said:
I've seen the misconception everywhere, from non-competitive players that competitive play isn't fun for the players involved. This, put simply, could not be more wrong. To quickly clarify, what is meant by competitive vs. non-competitive is, put broadly, active participation in tournaments. I am not claiming that people who play in a small group all the time do not play competitively, that's just silly. But there is certainly a difference in attitude between this setting and a tournament setting.

I'm not a particularly notable player. I'm decent, but experiences smashers will always take me out, without a great deal of luck and accidents working in my favor. I can do most advanced techs, though I'm still "hammering out the kinks" of shffling well. And I've had the pleasure of attentiong a few, not many, tournaments. Hell, it was fun just getting my *** kicked. I can testify that few to zero players present did not appear to be having fun, even the losers. One of the reasons I love Melee so much more than the original version is because of how much a faster-pace the game has. Tournament "competitive" play takes the action to an even quicker pace that's as much fun to watch as it is to participate in.
Very simply, it's fun. The way you play is fun for you. The way I play is fun for me. The way billywill plays is fun for him. The way tournament players play is fun for them. We ARE all playing it for the fun game it is. It's stupid, ignorant, and childish to try to define fun for other people. What's the ultimate-oh-my-god-awesome-fun experience for you in Melee is not the same as everyone else's "most fun" experience.

The scope of my "fun" extends far beyond the boundaries of Super Smash Bros. When I play any game (including board games like Monopoly, Scrabble, etc.), I play to win. Winning is fun for me. Casual players seem unable to grasp this concept. If you like to just "play for fun", then why do you (and people like you) whine and complain when I 4-stock you? You are just playing for fun, right? Are you not having fun? I am going to assume that you do not like losing either. Why do people play games if not to win? I love using my intellect, reflexes, wits, imagination, etc. to defeat my opponents. I take great satisfaction in knowing that I correctly anticipated my opponents' moves.

So, why do I take smash so seriously? Well, frankly, the game itself is just very fun! How stupid would it be for my friends and I to play this game for hours on end but never improve? If we are not constantly improving in hopes of overtaking each other, we waste our time simply playing rounds of rock/paper/scissors. Why not at least have something to show for our dedication? We do not sign some contract that hands our soul over to the game. We take it seriously because it is more fun that way. I live for the tournament scene. I am unable to travel as much as I used to, but meeting up with old friends and seeing their devastating new tricks is also satisfying.

As others have already stated, please do not attempt to define fun for us. Refrain from lecturing us on "the intent of the creators"; no one really knows the creators' intent, and even if we did, we would not care.

This question was answered when you asked it in the updates thread, why did you need more answers?

Silly question IMO, it's not like SSB is the first game in the history of man to be played competitively lol.

Yeah people have there way of having fun with games competive or casual im kinda of an inbetween While i like throwing bomb ombs at my friends faces i still also like having a climatic showdown on FD with no items people find what they like to do in a game and do it. If you dont like playing competivly then find people who dont like it either and play with them.

QFT. I was going to say something similar but it has been done. Ill just say somethings.

Why play a game that takes no skill? Why do anything that doesn't mean anything?:psycho:

Becoming the best and making it to the top is a pretty good reason why we play. What would you rather practice and have as a hobby....

Kick the Can or Football?

Me, I will only do an activity or play a game that is competitive, very difficult, and fun.

Now im severely disappointed about Brawl but I feel once we discover more about it it will be just as competitive, I hope. See what they did to Halo 3. What a joke. No BXR or 4S/2S...its a good/fun game, but now its just as special as all the other FPS's.

DBZ, MK, Naruto etc. dont take as much skill as other games like say GG, Halo, 3s, Smash, MvC2. And If there all equally fun, which one will you choose to play?

I DONT WANNA PLAY NO ****IN KIDDY PARTY GAME I WANNA SPEND MY TIME BEING A BEAST AT SOMETHING HARD. lol. :)

And to you "Casual Players" you think your having fun thats why you don't wanna learn ATs?? LMAO. Or think its against he Physics of the game?? Its a game. lol. We have wayyyy more fun and excitement then you, and are doing something productive in which you make money off of, maybe become famous, yeah.

So thats pretty much why, answered your question?
