Well, i've had this game since in came out in the UK (June 27th), and I've only just decided on a main after unlocking all the characters. That's of course Lucas.

Now, i'm not asking for anything advanced here, just basics that'll get me started, such as the best time to do what etc.

Any input is greatly appreciated though, thanks. :)

Lucas can be played either offensive or defensively. PK fire, especially short hopping PK fire is great as it keeps the opponent at a distance. F-Tilt stops those who are running at you to do a dash attack. D-Tilt can be used to start an easy combo. Lucas' weakness is mainly small fast characters, but his strength is large slow people. Lucas is mostly a grond person, but all of his ariels are good.

Hope this helps.

including myself in your posts
Yeah, short hopped PK Fires are slick. I like Lucas's jab a lot more than his d-tilt.

Here's my comments on the attacks.
Oh Trozz how could you? Linking to my topic jk.

Back on topic until your at around 100% apply lotsa pressure. Get in their faces with short hop aeriels. Then once you get near 100% start playing extremely defesively, and use your specials for spacing. More often than not this will through off the opponent and as they adapt to how your now playing they will usually slip up leaving them to be punished for the kill.

Good things for damage: PK Fire, n-air, jab
Good things for spacing: F-tilt
Good things for kills: F-smash

well you should use your pk fire a lot for spacing and a little spamming
but your regular jabs work pretty good to keep them off you and backing them off

Approaches: SH Nair, FH Fair (against taller characters), FH Dair* (easily the best approach with Lucas with proper spacing and FF. Combos to Fsmash, Dsmash or Usmash depending on situation)

Forcing Approaches: PK Freeze, PK Thunder, SH PK Fire (the idea is to have the correct spacing so that you can jab as they approach and force them to rack up damage.)

Close combat: Jab combo, Ftilt sometimes

Lag punishment: Uair, Nair, Bair, Dair

Spotdodge/roll spammers: Dsmash

Stupid lucky kills/ "Mindgames": Usmash

Edgeguarding: PKT1, Bair, Dair, PK Fire

That about covers how to play Lucas. Don't waste your time on "advanced techniques" because they really aren't going to help you much. It's much more important to have a solid grasp over Lucas's moveset and be able to space them properly.

Tyr said most anything else I would.

1. Don't be afraid to fight off the edge; your disjointed hitbox and good recovery will allow you to do it. I can chase opponents all the way off the screen with Lucas on Final Destination.

2. Don't forget to punish! If it works, it works. If they can't avoid PKT1 (the thunderball), than there isn't any reason to not use it. If they can't work around PK Fire, keep using it. If they can't figure out your USmash, for the love of GOD use it! I feel playing Lucas is a lot of finding out what little things your opponent can't handle.

3. Get used to alternating recoveries between PKT2 and rope snake. It's small, but significant.

4. Smash to punish. There's no point freely swinging your stick around at low percentages unless they set themselves up for it. Tyr again hit on this.

Meh that's just a few simple things that I often find overlooked. But really- it annoys me to watch videos where the Lucas player will be trying to hit an opponent with the stick/usmash who is at 20% without any proper set-up.

Also, if you are planning to edgeguard with the dair or bair, you should understand how each one spikes. The bair spikes at the tip of Lucas foot as it goes down (just imagine how it would really spike in real life) so spacing is crucial. If you want to use the dair, the last hit spikes, but it is a weak spike.

And dont spam his usmash. It's powerful, but some people new to Lucas are attracted to his visciously powerful usmash. Its great, but only in the right situations like when someone misses a super lagtastic attack. Stick is probably his best finisher.

Shorth op PKF is a huge part of lucas game. I reccommend B-sticking it. It's VERY defensive.
