Appendicitis(spelling?) Typing on my phone. Surgery at 8am. More info after that.
Update:
I figured out how to spell "appendicitis"
Gonna be honest, most uncomfortable night of my life. My abdomen started hurting around 8PM while I was at work and we were super busy so I couldn't even take a minute to rest. It got so bad that eventually I pretty much couldn't move without extreme sharp pains in my side. At about 10PM we had slowed down enough that I could call in to my local hospital and at least ask what the symptoms of appendicitis were. I actually only had one, the sharp stabbing pain in my abdomen, and at first didn't really want to go to the hospital(No insurance, get *****) My co-worker however wasn't having it, she was extremely worried about me and actually clocked me out herself and made me leave. So I go out, call my parents to tell them Im headed to the hospital(my mom is asleep at the time, thinks im there at home with her when she wakes up and demands to know why exactly im calling from the next room) and I explain that Im headed to the hospital.
At roughly 10:20PM I get to the hospital and check in, fill out my information and just wait for my name to be called. Its about 10:30 when my parents show up. A nurse checks my vitals(the first of about 100 times altogether) and says to wait back in the waiting room and they'll have a bed for me shortly. They call me in again and take me to the ER for a check up and some testing. From the area of the pain they too assume it's appendicitis and have me change into the oh so fashionable hospital gown and lie down while they get some things ready. At this point i start sending out mass texts to friends just because I thought it would be hilarious to ruin any and all of their good moods. A nurse comes in and tells me she'll need a urine sample, which is unfortunate because I had gone literally right before I left work but then she mentioned the word "catheter" and it literally scared the piss out of me. It was at this point the thought "I need to do whatever I can to not get things shoved up my ****" crossed my mind. Another nurse comes in, checks my vitals again and then begins hooking me up to an IV saying she's brought morphine and necessary fluids. Being the man that I am with my massive balls I politely declined the morphine and all other pain killers. It was then that a third nurse came in and gave me the run down of what was going to happen, they would need a CAT scan to check for appendicitis so they were preparing that and a room for afterwords.
After about an hour of waiting(at this point it's about 12AM) the first nurse returns to give me the worst news I got all night. Without health insurance, my bank account was going to ****ed harder than a triple ****ed hooker. She gave me some information on various companies and organizations that would be able to help me lower my bill and set up a payment plan but let's just say Im glad I've already bought every game I wanted for this(and possibly next) year.
Around Midnight:30 the doctor in charge of the CAT scan comes in with some great news. In order to see my appendix, they need contrast for the scan, but there's at least 30 feet of intestine between any given opening on my body and my appendix, so the only way to do it is to give me an enema. For those of you who don't know what an enema is, go look it up on Google Video with the safe search off. Needless to say I then realized that my thought process earlier should have been "I need to do whatever I can to not get things shoved up my **** OR MY ***." So the doctor wheels me to the big doughnut of a CAT scan machine and gives me the rundown. First he's going to take a few pictures of my insides as they are normally, then he's going to shove a tube into my rectum and fill my intestine with water and iodine, at which point I have to hold it in while he takes more pictures. He then explained that after it was done, he would let some of the water and iodine drain out and then it would be up to me to remove the rest. Manually. In the bathroom next door. So he starts the normal pictures and everything is pretty fine, aside from the fact that for some reason I could not stop shaking(I assumed it was due to fear of the giant bag of water he had placed on my lap to remind me what comes next, but I later found out I had the chills) The doctor then comes in and asks me to roll onto my right side so he can insert the tubing(I tell him I usually wait till the third or fourth date for that kind of thing but he was just so gosh darn charming) Now, for those of you who have never had a gallon of water injected into you from the wrong end, let me just say this: It is very uncomfortable, but more so, it is very VERY cold and this did help my shaking. Now of course shaking, along with the constant urge to eject all of this very unfamiliar substance from my bowls made it very hard to relax, but I did manage(No spillage from me) Afterwords, just as he said, the doctor drained what he could then sent me off to the bathroom. Now, Im gonna be honest, what happened in the bathroom is not something I really want to share and Im sure most of you don't want to read about it so let's just skip that part. After all is said and done, im wheeled back to the ER. It's about 1AM now and after a quick minute the doctor tells me that I do in fact have appendicitis and that they're getting set to remove it at 8AM. They tell me to just wait for a bit and they'll have a room for me.
1:30AM, I get wheeled to my room, another vitals check and a weight check(133.6 lbs) and then they set me up with some antibiotics. Once Im in bed I take the time to log on to SWF where I made this blog, sort of as a joke. I wanted to make it longer but the internet eats the batter on my phone quickly so I just made a quick one liner. My nurse then tells me that she's checking out for the night, her shift is over and a new nurse will be in shortly. Not long after that, the new nurse does show up and once again tests my vitals. She also wants to weigh me but I had just done it so I could just give her the exact number. She gives me the rundown of whats going to happen, that I cant eat or drink till the surgery is done in the morning(unfortunate as I hadn't eaten since 5PM the day prior) It's about 2AM now and Im no where near able to sleep so I just sort of lie in bed texting various friends. I fall asleep at around 3AM just to be promptly woken up at 4AM by a friend who waited way too long to respond to my texts. After a short exchange, I fall back asleep, not worried about surgery whatsoever.
6AM rolls around and my nurse wakes me up(and checks my vitals again) and starts to give me the rundown. I'll have to fill out some paperwork, sign some consents, and I'll be meeting with the anesthesiologist and my surgeon before anything happens so I can be sure all the information is straight. Im told if I need to use the bathroom, do it before the surgery as if I need to pee afterwords they'll have to use a catheter. I am then told that after the surgery I'll only be able to have a liquid lunch and a gallon of fluids pumped into me via IV, convincing me this was all just an elaborate plan to stick a tube up my ****. Various nurses and doctors come in, I sign what I need to sign, I find out my anesthesiologist is the father of a girl I used to go to school with in middle school(I didn't mention that the only reason I remember her was because she was super hot and we made out randomly one day) My parents are both there, though im not sure why, I would have preferred they stay home and get some sleep. I find out from them, the doctor preforming the surgery was apparently the most in demand, well practiced doctor in a 200 mile radius. My step-father had tried to get him for his hernia surgery but the waiting list was gigantic. This actually puts me less at ease as I figure it will probably cost more.
So 8AM rolls around and the anesthesiologist and another doctor come in, and Im given something to help me relax before they wheel me into the operating room. I get on the table and the anesthesiologist gives me a mask and I assume says something, but im going to be honest, the second the inhaled the ether I was out cold. Literally, I didn't even have time to be told to count backwards or whatever, I was just out. I didn't even realize it either until I had woken up hearing one of the nurses saying the operation was a complete success. It's now 10AM and they're wheeling me back to my room where my mother is waiting. Tired as I am, I still go for my cell right away to mass message that Im ok. The doctor comes in to tell me to get some rest and that they'll bring me some lunch later on.
At about 11AM I get this really, really terrible feeling. I have to pee. I had been told earlier that I wasn't allowed to get up from bed yet and of course, that if I had to go, catheter. Of course when I tell the nurse I have to go I promptly object to the idea of having a tube shoved up my **** so she brings me bed pan thingy. Relieved(in more ways than one) it's only 45 minutes later that I have to go again. Turns out over the night I had had about one and a half gallons of fluid pumped into my body, so this is going to become a rather frequent event. At around 1PM Im brought in my lunch(Soup, more soup, water, juice and jello) and given the worst news of the day. For the next few days, im not allowed to eat meat. Very much depressed as I am about the news, I eat the entire meal given to me and am now told "Lets see if you throw it up." Apparently it's quite frequent for patients to not be able to hold their food after an appendectomy. But once again, being the man I am with my tremendous balls, not only do I hold my meal, but i demand more(which I get) and prove that im not having many of the negative side effects that are normal from surgery(dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, fever) I am however exhausted so I take the chance to grab a nap.
I am woken up at around 3PM by my nurse asking me when I hope to go home, which I of course respond with "As soon as possible." She tells me that I've recovered remarkably quickly and will start the paperwork to get me out of there. At this point it's just waiting for me so I sort of nod in and out of sleep and texting random people. 4:20PM comes around and my mother(who had left earlier to pick up the medication they had prescribed for me) returned with a change of clothes. Not long after my nurse returned with my paperwork which I promptly filled out. She removed my IV and I took the chance to use the actual bathroom for once and change back into my normal clothes. A wheelchair is brought in and Im wheeled outside to my mothers car(I guess I shouldn't be driving in my condition or something) and I make it home a few minutes before 5PM
The whole experience felt alot less serious to me physically and mentally than it did financially. I know for a fact that my bank account is going to be drained due to this. My parents are being so kind as to forgo charging me rent for a while to try and make things easier for me but Im still gonna be rather poor by the end of the year. I think for my troubles, I should be made a mod and given a custom titles
