If you could redesign the stage creator, how would you make it?

I would make it where you can recolor blocks.

There would be more backgrounds THAT are based on other games.

sceneery. There has to be more scenery! Make grass on tiles be a button.

-hazards- Make it where you can place stage hazards and when they go off (must be 10 seconds between them)

hazards
-lava spurt from background
-lava pouring from left or right side.
-lava wave from background(able to place the safe capsule)

-Chimera (and set it's route and how long it stays)

-arrows rain from sky

How would you design stage maker?

Ideally you should be able to program and retexture any model you want in the game into your custom stage and be able to import your own music and backgrounds, but I'm not sure which one's less likely.

would be nice if we could put things from other Nintendo games, such as enemies, backgrounds, props and all that...

for example: put Star blocks from Kirby or cloud platforms from Yoshi's Story or tall mushrooms from Mario...

I would love to use props and backgrounds from different Nintendo games.

Maybe original stuff, like props from the trophy table in Melee. (put stuff from real houses in the stage also. Maybe a virtual boy)

Or Arcade machines.

I think custom stages should only be allowed in Friend Roster, and not World Wide randoms, like Basic Brawl and Team Battle.
Wrong topic.

I would like to see more variation in the building blocks something with a little more character stuff from other Nintendo game it would make the stage designs more interesting. Some optional hazards would be nice maybe being able to make use of stuff that is already in use of the other stage designs or using stuff from the subspace, assuming there is another subspace in the next Smash Bros.

1. Make it so objects don't take up more space in the grid than they obviously should. Ideally, remove the grid altogether, and just let you place stuff as snug up against each other as you want.

2. Allow you to rotate blocks 360degrees, so you can flip things upside down, at 90degrees, or anywhere in between.

3. Greater control over the size, shape, and position of the blastzone walls

4. Better control over the size, and path of moving platforms. Being able to have a large platform that doesn't move stupidly far would be nice, as well as having the option to let them move across diagonal paths, or other bent shapes. Even having them go in a loop over a designated shape. Letting them dissappear into objects would be nice too.

Just those 4 things would open up a great deal of possibilities for custom stage building. Things like more variety in backgrounds and block colors would all be nice extras, but I'd rather take any of the above over having the stage be "pretty". I'll take function over form, thanks.

Custom Hazards
-Rotating Ball and Chain.
-Cannons that fire from the background
-Thomp
-Lava

Instead of large objects placed to make up a stage, I'd have minecraft style blocks which you place.

IDK, just quick ideas

First I would increase the number of themes to 9 at least and several backgrounds for each theme.

My suggestions are:

Mayan (rock and jungle)

Gothic (classic and dark)

Arabesque (classic and colorful)

Under construction (iron platforms and building machines)

Sci-fi (Star Trek & Star Wars like)

Digital (geometric and abstract)

Cristals (pretty kryptonaian)

Casino (dices, poker cards, roulettes and slot machines).

Candy (Sweet!)

Also, I would add a "random" buttom, for those who don't know where to start in a construction.

I would like to be able to change the size of the borders (blast zones) That way we can have stages like Eldin Bridge where you get KO'd for walking off the edge.

We were talking about the use of the Wiipad in the Picthochat stage, but why not use it to make the costum stages instead?

I think it would be good if in addition to creating a stage from scratch, you could save a copy of an existing stage and modify it.

Well, since Namco designed the character creators in SC4 and 5, who knows? They might be saying "You call THAT a stage creator and make these things reality. I want a color selector, the ability to add hazards, and the ability to just modify current stages. Please?

Good point! It think it would be fun to use gimmiks from the actual stages. But I hope there will be exclusive gimmiks for the edit section.

What if you could use pictures downloaded from the net or from your PC as backgrounds?
This idea came into my mind while thinking back of Pang 3 and how it used famous paintings as backgrounds.

^ that would be awesome. I'd want the stages to have custom backgrounds, not just choose from a given set of BGs.

Alot of the things people are mentioning in their posts are ideally, like if you could have unlockable Nintendo/3rd party items that would be in a collection where you could customize your own stage with, for example, using the bridge from SMB during the boss battle with Bowser as a platform, a background of Hyrule field, with Animal Crossing characters in the background (ok bad combination, but it's just an example). This would especially be nice if you can pick these stages for online play.

You know what? The new game might have all new stages while the editor could have some backgrounds and gimmiks from the past editions stages as unlockable/downloadable contents.

I guess it's going to be one of these two options: 1) They just take it out of the game 2) They make it spectacular.

Brawl's one was basically interesting for experiments. Something like making a "cage" with only one hole, or smaller Final Destinations kind of stages... But nothing was really good to see, in the end it was boring looking. I hope the next one is filled with Nintendo-based backgrounds and gimmicks.

I'm voting for the second option if it's possible. Thought I want it nintendesque as well. You know, for how much large the game itself will be there is no way the classic, the versus and the story mode will be able to homage ALL the nintendo characters and games. And if we include the third parties the list will turn bigger and bigger. So the costum stages mode becomes a comfy way to give homage to all the things the regular modes didn't.

A cool thing would be to import textures from other games that are saved on your system memory, but I'm not sure it could be done.

Naturally, we're going to be able to use the game pad to design our stages, as well as a greater variety of options; smaller grid, customizable stage size/kill walls, larger item limit restrictions.

But generally, we just need more of everything.

I'd really like to see unlockable stage backgrounds, floors, hazards, enemies, music, weather, stage items, both generic as well as ones from various different Nintendo games. And you wouldn't be limited to just one template per stage. That way, not only could you make series specific custom stages, but you'd be able to mix and match them. Then you could mix and match franchises within a single stage.

Say, for instance, you beat the single player with Mario and you can unlock placable question blocks, which when hit, grant items, or pipes from Super Mario Bros. that actually work like the SMB stage in SSB64.
Beat it with Bowser, you unlock a bullet bill cannon that fires at the combatants or a lava texture that burns when you touch it.
Donkey Kong grants swinging vines or a rainstorm weather effect.
With Link, you get yourself a podium on which the Triforce appears occasionally, and when you touch it, gets you points or beefs up your attacks. King of the hill type games?
Ice Climbers will give you falling icicles and icy floors.
Samus gets you get her airship that can be used as a floating moving platform or a continuous heat effect that drains all players health.

Etc. Etc. Etc. The possibilities are endless. Just give us the means to be creative.

Well for a start, to repeat what other people have been saying, the Stage Builder should have smaller squares on the grid, as well as taking elements from actual Nintendo titles to make the stages less generic. Specifically, aside from having some specific stage pieces from various games, there'd also be sets of tiles based on old-school games (most old games are tile-based after all) which can be mixed and matched. As some visual examples:

One of the best things about the stages in Smash Bros. is seeing some of your favorite areas from old games, rendered as you've never seen them before, but with stages like 75M, Mario Bros. Mushroom Kingdom (I and II), you don't really get that feeling - they look like old-school Nintendo graphics textured onto a series of basic shapes, and you can just feel that they didn't put quite as much effort into a stage like Mario Bros. compared to a stage like Halberd.

Therefore, why not give the players the tools to make said Retro-esque stages (tile-based) with a selection of pre-set tiles (and the ability to texture your own/add your own background), whilst removing the traditional 'retro' stages from the main stage selection. That's not to say they shouldn't still include stages from retro games - but they should actually be graphically updated, as both of the Ice Climbers stages have been so far.

This way, they'd be giving the Stage Builder more creative freedom, there'd be stages with both a 'modern' graphical style and a 'retro' graphical style (an ongoing thing in Smash), whilst all of the actual levels included with the game itself could focus on showing of the new-found graphical prowess of the Wii U.

Plus of course, there'd hopefully be options in the Stage Builder to edit lighting, make walk-off stages, choose initial character spawn points, the path of moving platforms, etc. etc.

I know there use to be a thread already about this but I haven’t been able to find it.

I really like the Stage Builder concept but I feel it was very incomplete in Brawl. I think with some work it will be a lot of fun to play. There are a few things I would love to see. A lot have already mentioned this but I’ll put it here too.

System Mechanics
- Smaller grid for better alignment
- Custom size map: So you could say you want # x # grid map
- Adjustable kill zones
- Add water or lava bottom
- Able to rotate pieces
- Able to mix themes

Parts
I believe that there should be more themes with original and Nintendo style parts. These can be mixed to give ultimate versatility. This is some examples

Original items
- NPC Generator: Able to select and spawn enemies that would be found in adventure mode. So enemies like Redeads, Koopas, or whatever you want will pop out at a constant rate.
- Lava Platforms
- Food Theme items (because you have Yoshi, Kirby, Wario, and Dedede).

Mario
- Invisible Blocks
- Bullet Bill Cannons
- Piranha Plants
- Thwomps
- Chomp-Chomps
- Pow Blocks
- Breakable Blocks

Zelda
- Whirlwinds like in Smash 64
- Grass You can cut
- Beambos
- Bomb plants

Donkey Kong
- Barrel Cannons
- Flaming cans of oil

Metroid
- Aliens that looks like a croissant and if you freeze them they can be used as a platform
- Phazon pools or that Yellow stuff

Kid Icarus
- Healing Pools
- Tentacle Claws

There should be a variety of backgrounds to choose from many from classic areas in Nintendo.

Downloadable Content
This is something that can be very good or very bad. Be able to download parts, themes, and backgrounds is great but its when players upload stuff that can be tricky. It would be interesting sharing levels or textures that characters make and upload it for people to see but then you have the guy who uses an image from 4Chan as a background. There will have to be some filter on uploading content through the web.

I agree on both but clarify me one point:
- Custom size map: So you could say you want # x # grid map
Does it mean you have a HUGE picture for every template and you can decide which portion of it you will cut to use as background, kinda like the map of Sim City Creator? That would be nice :)

I think the main thing I'd want for stage building would be some more backgrounds. We got the mountains, the castle, and the metallic place; and those are fine and all but there would've been so cool if we had six or seven more backgrounds from the three we got. Now I'm not talking about anything fancy just basic, but still good looking backgrounds.

1. Jungle/Forest/Plains ect. ect.
2: City
3: Volcano/Fire Pit
4: Arctic
5: Space
6: Beach/Sea
7: Sky/Clouds
8: Dojo/Temple

As far as other stuff goes I'd just want Fire/Lava, Electric, Wind currents, and Water hazards to be usable. Oh and a color changer on the platforms.

That could be possible. I just want to be able to resize it so you could have a tall and thin stage (like for a tetris stage) or a short and wide stage for ground focus combat.

I remember someone mentioning before having multi-layer background. So you would have the regular background but then you would have a layer you could decorate to give a more 3D perspective. In this second layer you could place decorative objects like flowers, blocks, or even trophies you've collected into it.

My dream stage editor would include the following features:
1. Less limitations than Brawl. Allow for you to place objects as tightly together as you want. so long as it doesn't produce glitchy spots.
2. Use the game pad for displaying all your available objects. This gets rid of annoying sub menus.
3. On top of just adding more themes, it should let you draw your own background on the game pad in color. People like me who have a certain degree of drawing ability will no doubt make some AMAZING themes.
4. LAYERS. This one is important. Allow for placing blocks and objects in a secondary middle ground layer. So in other words characters fight on the foreground layer only. And the layer of stuff behind it can't be touched. It's only there for decoration. This way we can finally recreate Hyrule castle from SSB64.
5. Customize-able blocks. This way you can change the color from a palette of colors, and texture from a variety of textures (ex: brick, wood, stone, or metal) Maybe even let you doodle on the block.
6. Allow for adjusting boarders so as to make stages where you can walk off the stage and get KO'd.
7. Nintendo themed blocks/objects (ex: mario, zelda, metroid, DK)
So, What do you think? ;)
