If you could change the control scheme in Melee, would you?

I think the Smash control scheme is pretty bad for a fighting game. It's very imprecise. Personally, I would come up with a control scheme involving an 8-way digital stick and two attack buttons instead of one, along with other changes. I put some thought into it but never entirely fleshed out the idea.

I think I would switch B actions to X, so I only have to use A, X, and Y, which are all right next to each other. Multishining would just be Y-X-Y-X-Y, and aerials OoS would still be Y-A. Only other thing I would like to change is the C-stick just because it's so far from the buttons, but I'm not sure what you could do about that. I've thought about having a stick on the BOTTOM of a controller that you control with your middle finger or something, but that would probably mess too much with just being able to hold the controller steady, idk. Having buttons on the bottom that you could map to a move no matter what direction you're holding would be sick. You could input a FF and nair at the same time (or uair without the C-stick), SHDL while holding forward, shine OoS while tap jumping (for DI purposes), etc.

This would certainly make the game easier, but also less complex. Getting rid of all those angles inbetween 45 and 90 would have huge, negative impacts on WDing, DI, SDI, recoveries, shield tilting, angling moves, and probably other stuff.

Yeah no analog would kill the game for me. I would likely put grab on X and shield on Z (for powershields). While the option of tapjump would be nice, having to cstick stuff like usmash out of run would be butts.

I'd make the 4 right thumb buttons as small and as close together as n64 c buttons, all with the sensitivity of Gc b button, id make the Gc z button contacts larger and button as wide as n64 r button but as long as Gc z button with same sensitivity as Gc dpad

Make interchangable sticks for melee and 64 respectively all in a Gc shell ofc; there's my dream smash controller

Maybe add a crouch button somewhere

Yes.
The control scheme in melee should be completely re-assignable.

Reliance on the layout of the gamecube controller has probably caused some artificial barriers that we as a community are not completely aware of. It is one of the few things I think melee is really lacking when compared to brawl (the other being the variety of available badass music).

Gamecube controller is the best of all time hands down

Literally no other controller ever made could even play Melee (try some of them with Dolphin....its terrible)

I honestly wouldn't change a single thing about the controls. Melee 2 gud

I'd make z button always grab and remove the other functions.

I know there are other cool uses for z but i really don't care, I just get mad when i try to grab with z and a light shield comes up.

But then you couldn't do that flashy shied -> lightshield trick!

Also, it'd make doing a marth killer a pain.
