If PMDEV kickstarted their own smash-like IP would you fund it?

I would but I'm only 18 and paying for college XD. I think they are making a game similar to smash, rise of aither (sorry if I got the title wrong) I don't remember it getting a kick starter tho

rivals isn't pmdt, but it's a pretty cool looking game.

and i would totally support it, however unlikely they would be to start that up at this point.

If it's on Linux, hell yes.

I'll support anyone who can bring me some damn fighting games on Linux already.

I feel like if PMDT had the rights, collaboration with HAL Laboratories, and the same amount of time that Sakurai made Brawl, I think they could make a better official Smash game than Sakurai.

You're not taking into account the hundreds upon hundreds of people that went into creating Brawl. The PMDT would need and deserve more time than that. On top of that, I wouldn't want to see the talent of these folks go toward making another Smash game. Honestly, the PMDT could make a game totally worth it's own franchise; even if it's Smash-like in terms of mechanics. On top of THAT, these folks have jobs, families, and various other responsibilities to which even the action of making a mod is consuming of that time. If they were to do this, I'd be tickled pink, but there's far more factors to this, factors that aren't solved just by us offering monetary support.

I must have worded that badly, but what I was trying to say is that I think the PMDT has a better vision for Smash than Sakurai given that game development is their motivation in life and they had the same rights and resources that Sakurai had when making Brawl or Smash 4.

You guys think its a good idea? why
Prepare to be shocked:

They (or some of them) actually did try to put forth their own IP with a Kickstarter: Air Dash Online. They even had pro Melee players like M2K and Wobbles giving their input.

Unfortunately, the project failed and was cancelled. Go ask PMDev as a whole and the ADO developer will probably be in there somewhere.

Air Dash Online is in no way affiliated with Project M and outside of Dantarion (who left quickly anyway) had no members of the PM Dev Team on its team.

It's difficult to say. Part of the reason I love Project M is the character familiarity. I enjoy the way certain characters feel and I have my doubts that the PMDevs would want to make their own IP with each character being identical to some smash bros counterpart. The other side is that they're already proving to be making Project M an amazing game in its own right. I feel like they could make an absolutely amazing original game... I just would feel bad about losing PM support. :(

If PMDT would make a smash-like game, I would support it for sure. In fact I want the smash formula to develop into multiple franchises, similar to how Street Fighter spawned a bunch of games with Similar combat, but with big mechanic differences.

Melee ain't gona last forever, and as perfect as I feel PM is (Its a ****ing masterpiece!) Its risky to develop a mod as a top level competitive fighting game, especially since Nintendo is sponsoring us.

I don't even want to call PM a mod anymore, its the best smash game I ever played, all characters feel tournament viable with fast and technical play, bunch of balanced stage variety. BUNCH of combo variety.
I seriously can't thank you guys enough for making it.

Never played the tmnt game but i remember it. I think PMDEV are the only people to put time into a competitive game in this genre. It seems like a huge void that some company could be capitalizing on. This game as a fighting game genre can reach Street Fighter status if moves beyond a mod (PM) and a 10 year old game (melee)

Rivals of aether is in the works. It has notable differences from smash proper, so yo say, but those are intentional and well thought out. It also has good playtesters behind it, giving good guidance and feedback.

I'm honestly really interested in roa starting up, it'll be pretty cool.

The characters so far look very unique, it feels like a lot of effort was put into them. The game might possibly launch with only 8 Characters. But if it gets popular, I foresee a bright future for this fighting game formula.

gonna be the odd man out and say NO.

PM is great but its not a game, its a mod. They took something and simply improved upon what was there. PM is good but its not much of anything new that wasnt there fundamentally already. They do fantastic work but them making a full game? Maybe if you give them 7 years.

PlayStation president said that he wants to make All Stars 2 but because the first one sucked he wants it to be "repurposed".
I could see Sony attempting to buy PMDev Team to fix their game. But that's about all i could guess. Smash really relies on character familiarity and im not sure how many people would play a standalone ip.

If PMDEV worked on allstars or a standalone ip this community might pick it up and it could grab a bigger audience with playstation and xbox gamers. This is all assuming Nintendo decides to not make a game called Melee 2 or add more melee/pm tech in a patch for sm4sh. That would probably kill melee and pm in a heartbeat

If it was a PC game which was free, such as DOTA 2 or League of Legends, I would throw money to my screen.

Yeah, that might be the sad reality. It's tough to tell because no game has ever come out that's matched the level of polish of a Smash game, but it seems like the majority of people come for the characters and stay because of the gameplay. You take away the characters, and people lose interest.

I'm saying this based on the really surprising inability of Air Dash Online to get funded on kickstarter. If I'm remembering, they were reeeaaaally far off their goals. Maybe it was just a marketing problem, because I never even heard about it until after it had already been pulled from kickstarter, but it seems like the community just didn't care. :(

they didn't have a good pr head and their product they presented wasn't really polished enough to justify their steep donation goals. had they paced themselves better, built up their product more gradually, and given a better looking video (basically, more gameplay that showed off how good their system was with its differences from the basic smash engine we're used to), they might have had a better shot.

but, it is true that a lot of smash's success comes from the fact that i can clobber ganondorf with pikachu or create the greatest crossover by teaming mario with fox mccloud, etc...

If it's done properly, yeah why not
It's pretty freaking hard to make a game properly is all I'm saying.

Do it like sakurai did. Build the demo with IPs you don't own and take it to the owners as proof of concept. Once you have approval you can use crowd funding...

tbh I would buy a standalone IP if the game was good. idgaf about character familiarity or whatever, I only care that the game is good and fun.

I mostly agree with this but there's no denying that a large part of the Super Smash Bros. series' success comes from the fact that it employs iconic Nintendo characters.

However, I believe it's still possible to create a Smash clone using other famous video game icons and find success. For example, if PMDev used Crash Bandicoot characters for a Smash-like IP people would probably stand in line to help fund it. I know I'd eagerly give them some seed money to develop the game.

Personally, if PM's characters had nothing to do with Nintendo characters but played generally the same I'd still be playing it

Definitely not. If I ever did it'd only be because I like the people on the PMDev team like Strong Bad and co.

I'm too broke to fund, but I'd definitely be interested in a game like that. I just want more Smash styled games in general. I'm surprised that their aren't more. ROA looks great, but that's about it.

I backed ADO before it was canceled. I'd definitely back an independent project by PMDT members, even if it's not Smash related. It's a good way to give back.

I believe Skullgirls is being ported to Linux.

Yeah, I backed the IGG when they first announced it over two years ago.

Still waiting.
