I primarily use my PS3 for playing PS1 RPG's. I ran out of space on my memory cards cause I have like 20 different save files for Suikoden 2 and even more for Xenogears, so the hardrive is much appreciated. As someone who grew up playing the Suikodens, Xenogears, FF4 and 6, etc. its pretty hard for me to get into newer RPG's. I've pretty much just spent my time recently replaying games I've already beaten several times.

I may actually have something close to the speedrun record on Chrono Trigger. I once beat that game twice in one day. Just finished and started over again right there. So good.

In a sense, I agree with both sides of the argument. There are fantastic old RPGs that I must get around to playing. Mostly for nostalgic purposes. But, like Skrah, I agree that there are some amazing new RPGs that should be given a chance. These are some of my faves that spring to mind:

Old:

  • Final Fantasy IV & VI
  • Earthbound
  • Secret of Mana
New:

  • The World Ends With You
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Persona 3
  • Okami
  • Devil May Cry 4

I wasn't very nostalgic for the older Final Fantasies until I heard of Dissidia: Final Fantasy. I was pretty much forced to play them, and now I feel like an official fan.

RPGs these days seem a bit light-hearted, but still pretty decent.

You guys should buy Etrian Odyssey for DS, or at least emulate it. It is a newer RPG based off the traditional RPGs like Dragon Quest. Extremely difficult. It isn't very noob-friendly at all.

Mother 3 is a fairly new rpg that's pretty good.

I'm surprised nobody here specifically mentioned Fire Emblem 4. The storyline is simply amazing.

I wish I could find Xenogears, I never got a chance to play it,
but my friend has it, maybe I can borrow:D

Chrono Cross seems overlooked, it`s not as good as Chrono Trigger I think,
but it is seriously worth playing. Just hearing a midi on vgmusic of the
game caused me to play it all the way through from nostalgia of the first time I tried.

Also, I think everyone should play Golden Sun-it is incredibly fun-
and I am inclined once again to play it, for the third time.
