How about an official thread for all things unlockable?

I'm actually glad it's easy to unlock everything, this is a fighting game. If you bring the game over to your friends party you should be able to experience the full content without having to grind for hours and become THAT guy. If you play it competitively it's nice to have everything unlocked right away so you can cut the crap and get straight down to practicing tech and finding your main/playstyle.

I'm honestly in camp: why even have unlockables? when it comes to stuff like this.

Yeah; it seems like they've found the right balance.

Bingo. I can get all the characters--assuming the VS mode amount is really that low--in an hour...two hours tops (special-->300%-->lipstick item=3 second matches). Meaning I can easily get to practicing/finding my main(s) before sunup on launch night.

For some unlockables are a big part of the experience. They give one a reason to keep playing, and a reason to try a mode that they may not originally like.

I agree completely. You should never have to unlock characters, stages, or anything that effects gameplay in a fighting game.

Having unlockable costumes, trophies, titles, music, and other stuff like that is fine. Unlockable characters, stages, and versus mode options are a big no no, though.

Wario

Falco

Ganon

Dr Mario

Dart Pit

Duck Hunt

jiggly puff

Ness

Rob (not bigger cuz i care.. just is bigger)

So we have all these new characters, i watched half of them unlock.
but I'm not sure if its the amount of games beaten in classic mode, or who you beat the mode with.
I just want to unlock duck hunt x bowler jr first.
lol

FROM @ViViFlario7
Falco: beat classic mode with 1 character
Ness: beat classic mode with 2 characters
Dark Pit: beat classic mode with 4 characters
Duck Hunt: beat classic mode with Mii Fighter (can be any of the 3 classes)
Mr Game and Watch: beat classic mode with Duck Hunt
Bowser JR: beat classic mode with Bowser on 7.0 intensity or higher
Dr Mario: beat classic mode with Mario
Ganondorf: beat classic mode with Link
R.O.B: play 70 vs matches

One of the streamers unlocked Dark Pit before unlocking Falco or Ness.

Also Wario is 20-30 matches on VS.

But....... come on! It is fun, no? Unlockable characters are part of the magic of Smash Bros.! It sucks for tournament setup, but you know what? some might say that it's okay because smash bros #isnotarealfightinggame.

I'm totally joking though, because I realize that statement is like the N-word to this community, lol.
And I do consider myself a part of this community.
God, look at all the explaining I have to do to protect myself against possible negative backlash over such a stupid joke... one would think it would warrant the repeated use of the backspace key, but not this guy!

I'm sorry, this past day has been taxing on my sanity... :079:

Lucina: One guy unlocked her by beating Classic with Marth, another didn't get her when doing so but got her when doing it with another character, so it's a bit of a mystery.

Wario: ~30 VS battles

Jigglypuff: Beat Classic while using a custom moveset.

I tried doing Classic with a Custom Mii on the first time through. I got Falco. (5.0 rating) Afterwards, I went to Versus and did a quick match and it unlocked Ness. The battle before Ness was my 9th match.

It's still a little confusing how things are unlocked. I guess the answer is play classic mode a lot and then go play vs mode a lot for Wario and R.O.B. but even that seems a little unsure at the moment? maybe once more streams show up we can figure it out more.

I'm actually pretty disappointed how easy it is to unlock everyone one. Where is the 20 hours or 500 matches?

I picked up the game a few hours ago. I was able to unlock everyone in about an hour simply by playing versus matches and KOing myself with only 1 stock. Jigglypuff was the last unlockable and a new challenger approached every 10 matches I think.

Does anyone know the method to unlock all the stages? And does anyone know if team attack is an unlockable setting? It's not in the regular settings and it's kinda bumming me out. At least online is lag free. I know the game gives you hints on how to unlock stuff, but two years in Japan and I still can't read or speak the language.

I just left my gamecube on over night to bypass stuff like that so I can't sympathize. Besides, just because the roster is easy to unlock (which I'm pretty okay with) doesn't mean that there isn't loads of unlockable content elsewhere in the game.

Just wanna get my hands on them newcomers ASAP.

This is appearing on a couple of websites:

10 matches - Ness
20 matches - Falco
30 matches - Wario
40 matches - Lucina
50 matches - Dark Pit
60 matches - Dr. Mario
70 matches - R.O.B.
80 matches - Ganondorf
90 matches - Mr. Game & Watch
100 matches - Bowser Jr.
110 matches - Duck Hunt Dog
120 matches - Jigglypuff

In Melee it took 1,000 matches to unlock all the characters. And another random-ass decision making Jigglypuff the final unlock instead of DHD, just like sticking Yoshi in the middle of the Mario franchise.

Man, unlocking all the characters in Melee was like a game within itself, and it was awesome. A real challenge. A good combination of creative, challenging and time-consuming (if you didn't do it just the VS. match way). Like you actually felt like you earned the characters and it was gratifying when you unlocked them. This game will just be 1 stock versus, jump off the ledge, rinse and repeat, because they made it so easy that way.

I don't like how everything is unlockable through Classic mode.
I was thinking the same thing.

Granted, I'd like to have the whole cast quickly, sure, but why even have them unlockable in the first place if it's going to be easy and redundant to unlock them?

only have ROB left, but i don't wanna get him from versus matches.

i got every character from classic except wario, who i got --oddly enough-- by completing 100-man-challenge (the japanese for this is 百人組み手 in the 組み手 menu)

gonna mess around in other modes i guess.

-------
additionally:

i got jigglypuff by doing classic with pikachu (7.0). i hadn't completed any other pokemon, so it wasn't dependent on having multiple pokemon completed. perhaps it was simply related to the general number of completed characters, or otherwise the difficulty level.

i did NOT get g&w from beating classic with G&W. i did classic on 7.0 and didn't game over but still didn't get g&w (nor was i challenged by another fighter). i think i got g&w after beating classic with ike, actually, so it's likely G&W simply depends on the number of general classic completions. or maybe i just had weird extenuating circumstances
