So...I'm doing a book report of sorts for school. In it, these groups of kids seek to kill a man because of a list of charges against him that goes against their views. I had to research a particular topic touched upon by my book, so I figured I would go with the closest thing: is there a justification in the death of another human, whether by murder or the death penalty?

Basically, just post the following info I need to collect:

Age, Race, Gender, Religious Beliefs(or lack of), Political Beliefs

Answer these questions on a scale of 1-5.

1 being yes, 2 kind of, 3 depends on the case, 4 not really, and 5 being no.

Question 1: Is the death penalty moral?
Question 2: Does it violate a person's constitutional right to life?
Question 3: Should juveniles, when tried as adults, be subject to the death penalty?

I'm posting this at about 2 other forums, so once I get a good total of opinions, I'm going to stop the survey. Should I post this elsewhere?

I'm gonna take 3's all around. These things always seem so situational to me.

Gender: Male

Religious Beliefs: Agnostic

Political beliefs: unsure, center-left (if you have to put either "liberal" or "conservative", just put liberal I guess. **** constricting political dichotomy!)

Question #1: 3 (entirely depends on the situation)

Question#2: 2 (there's a lot of questions that this statement brings up. for now, I'll go with kind of)

Question #3: 4 (it would have to be a heinous little hell-spawn to really deserve it, but I can imagine the case theoretically)

Question 1: Is the death penalty moral?
5
It is not moral. However, law is NOT morally based.

Question 2: Does it violate a person's constitutional right to life?
1

Yes it does, but even more it steps beyond the limits of government, giving the government control over a persons death and putting its own citizens to death.

Question 3: Should juveniles, when tried as adults, be subject to the death penalty?
5
No. The supreme court has already ruled on this. Death penalties for minors is unconstitutional.

Question 1: Is the death penalty moral?
Answer: 5 (no)

Question 2: Does it [the death penalty] violate a person's constitutional right to life?
Answer: lolwut? There is no such statement in the constitution that I am aware of. The Declaration of Independence, however, does promote the right to "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." So my answer is: There can be no answer to this question as stated.

Question 3: Should juveniles, when tried as adults, be subject to the death penalty?
Answer: 1 (yes)

The constitution guarantees that those rights described here are protected though not stated by saying that any man has certain rights that are guaranteed though not stated by the constitution.

This amendment protects "natural rights" which I'm sure that the right to live is amongst what you would consider a natural right.

Ahhh, ok I'll buy that. I also would have answered as you did to ? 3 however...

how can the death penalty even exist, if it violates the constitution?
and ... how can kids be tried as adults, if they can't be punished as adults?

These simple paradoxes is why I hate the death penality, and think it should be completely removed, I'll go further and submit it actually fits under "cruel and unusual."

And teens and kids should never be tried as adults, because they're not adults, despite having potentially committed "adult" crimes, it's totally arbitrary. 18 yo I can buy smokes, and enlist, to potentially die for my country. I can vote. But, I still can't purchase until 3 years later? meh. bad contradictions are bad. The punishment's aren't supposed to fit the crime. Trying kids as adults is also cruel and unusal.

not tryin' to derail yer thread superyoshi888 but these ?s are loaded ones to begin with.

I kinda figured that. That is why I asked on teh intwerwebz rather than the general public because they are rather touchy issues(with a thousand different paradoxes in between, as you said). Anyways, I'm done with this now, so I'll just collect the answers here and be on my way...

Oh hey just a quick request. Can we not debate anybody's answers or reasoning behind their answers? At least, not until the survey is done. It'd be discourteous to the OP if all the survey answer posts were swamped with debates or even worse, everybody decided not to answer the questions and just debate instead.

Thanks.

Political Beliefs: I'm going to say I believe in Absolute Monarchy. But if you don't count that, then I guess I'll have to say Liberal...
