I have to be honest, I hate the 3DS version's art style

Sorry I had to make this thread, but I just wanted to see where my opinion sets in with everybody else's.

Now let me get this clear before any backlash is made. I am talking about strictly the 3DS version, I think the Wii U version looks great and has a very fresh and new artstyle.

Has anybody noticed that the 3DS version looks so similar to Brawl? I know it's a given with the 3DS hardware being similar to the Wii's, but I felt they could have avoided it looking so similar to Brawl.

For example, let's take some pictures of characters who have somewhat seperate artstyles between Brawl and SSB4.

Brawl:

Toon Link has realistic texture doesn't really look cel-shaded. Link is super realistic and has a dark palette.

SSB4 (Wii U):

Toon Link looks cel-shaded, has a simpler texture, and is much brighter! Link himself has defining hair and overall a much brighter palette which draws inspiration from Skyward Sword but his appearence itself still holds true to Twilight Princess. It's different, and I like it. The game looks so much more appealing this way. Mario and Link shouldn't look hyper realistic like Brawl.

SSB4 (3DS):

Then we have this....ugh...this. First of all, let's gather information from the picture. Toon Link does not look cel-shaded, but doesn't look realistic like Brawl either, so it's a bit of a mix, usually that would be a good thing, but to me, it just looks, unpleasant, like it was never ment to be mixed. Then we have Link, who just looks exactly like Brawl, and doesn't really gather any inspiration from Skyward Sword unlike the Wii U version of Link, his palette has gone back down to dark and moody.

Let me get this clear, it doesn't have to be HD to have a bright and pleasant color scheme, so let me put that down before anyone argues that the Wii U version is HD and the 3DS version is not.

But we've just covered one picture of the 3DS version! Let's look at another one and i'll tell you why it just doesn't appeal to me.

First, let's talk about Samus. It is clear that she has the new design that came from Metroid Other M, but...it still looks like Brawl Samus! In terms of color palette and brightness, that is. This doesn't really look that good in my opinion. However, let me mention that I think Mario is one of the only characters that looks great and both the 3DS and Wii U version. You can see a clear difference between the somewhat cartoony but a bit serious Mario in the picture and the super hyper realistic detailed overalls Mario from Brawl, heh heh. If all the characters made the transition like Mario did, I wouldn't be talking right now.

So that's it, that's what I wanted to talk about, there's not a lot going on the SSB3DS board recently, so I thought i'd bring up something to talk about, oh, and before I leave;

Let me clarify I am not saying the 3DS version "sucks" or anything like that, it will still be a fantastic game that runs at a smooth 60fps. I just don't want any replies along the lines of "OMG DUDE YOU SUCK SMASH 4 IS THE GREATEAST THING EVUR YOU ARE JUST A STUPID HATER WHY DO YOU HATE THIS GAME@!@!#" Because that's not what i'm explaining, I am simply explaining my distaste for the art style.

Thoughts?

I don't think Toon Link has any cel shading in any of these three games at all.....

Anyway, I personally like the 3DS version's art direction. But hey, to each their own.

I think he has it in the Wii U version, it looks so much like Wind Waker HD.

I actually like the graphics. Sure, they aren't as good as the WiiU's, but they have some sort of appeal to me.

But hey, everyone has their own opinion.

I don't think so. I believe cel shading is more like stuff like these.

Among other examples.

Toon Link in Smash Bros Wii U just has bright and colourful textures, but he isn't cel shaded.

I suppose I was talking about brightness and less visual detail if he's not cel-shaded then.

I also find the 3DS style ugly, I'm happy that you can at least remove the black outlines.
But opinions differ.

I prefer the 3DS art style and find it to be slightly more unique when compared to the Wii U version's, but hey, to each their own I guess. I still like both games.

The 3DS version doesn't look all that bad to me tbh. I still prefer the Wii U's art style though.

Of course it isn't better than the Wii U art style, I mean common! It's like comparing a Nintendo 64 to a Gamecube, you just cant do that

I'm saying I don't like it in general rather than I think the Wii U version is better.

The 3DS is bacially a more powerful Wii, but at the same time with how weak it is you can't expect them to go all out on the graphical style. The major thing is gameplay. Honestly to me it looks different though, Brawl tried to hard to unify styles and this game in both the 3DS and WiiU just have characters have styles more close to there games.

Toon Link is not cel-shaded in Smash. Cel shading is exactly what it says - a shading technique. If one thing is cel shaded, everything has to be, because that's the way the shading renderer will be programmed to work. It's simply how the shading is generated. In the case of cel shading, all shadows are completely flat in colour. In Smash 3DS, character shadows seem to be just flat circles, but in general, the game has some more realistic shading compared to cel shading. It's likely that the characters are programmed to not generate real shadows to keep performance up, and those circle shadows that follow them are just a black texture with some opacity that is programmed to follow them around and wrap around any objects they are close to.

As for the 3DS art style, it's completely fine to me. And it's going to look better on an actual 3DS, since screenshots and videos never do 3DS games justice.

Yep, I know what you mean - a less realistic look always evens inferior hardware out. But the point might be that they're trying to compensate the missing HD textures with a more emphasized look of the foldings and outlines of the characters. Maybe we'll get that on the next handheld :)

I do not hate the 3DS version's art-style, per se. However, I was not overly fond of it to be perfectly honest. That was until I noticed Link' horrific and disgusting redesign that sends shivers down sweet, innocent, baby kittens spinal columns. Link's model on the Wii U version is the most repulsive, disgusting, abhorrent, and repugnant model in gaming history. But he looks just fine in the 3DS version. So I prefer it immensely. Seriously... people note Villager's **** face. I am not sure why no one has noticed how hideous Link's Wii U model's face is. It is all in the eyes, those vomitous eyes.

It's literally the exact same but with borders and darker colors. It looks like that because it's more or less trying to push the limits of the 3DS i guess.

First of all, I don't really have an issue with either of the art styles. Until you pointed it out, I honestly hadn't even realized that there was a difference stronger than the outline and lower res.

I do wonder, though, if Link's model may have just been copied over from Brawl and edited a bit, since they already have a model with a usable polygon count or whatever so they wouldn't have to make a new one?
I also wonder if it'll look better without the borders, but we'll see when it comes out I suppose.

I'll say that I do agree and dis-agree.

I think the mixture of realistic and cartoon-y style is better for the 3DS due to the fact that the screen is smaller and details need to be more noticable. I do, however fully agree that the 3DS version is WAAAY too dull in colors. Now that you really compared it and showed it off, I think that the 3DS version may look a bit more dull than Brawl, actually, in terms of colors. The colors are a lot more bold, but they're very dark and dull.

I dislike the borders in the 3DS style, and dislike the air-slashing effects on all the attacks in general. Otherwise, while you have some valid points, I think they come down to taste, and with the exception of characters I hate the design of to begin with (so far only Toon Link), I don't think any will be particularly bad on the 3DS.

Funny, I always found the 3DS version slightly more cartoony...I like both artstyles. Especially since I loved the Brawl artstyle. Also, the cutting effects with all the attacks are just awesome, and the outlines give it that edgy, Mario Strikers-esque feel that I love as well.

I noticed the difference as well. But, anyone else prefer 3DS version's Link over the Wii u version's Link?!

Anywho, I like the 3DS's art-style more, but I like the HD Graphics on the Wii U's as well.

To be honest (as always), I don't really care.

What else could they do with weaker hardware. Art style compensates for such issues.

At any rate, I love crappy graphics. It reminds me that I'm playing a game and can use the imagination. Brings me back to the (g)olden days.

I really don't see the art style being better represented if it's to match each other cross-platform. For instance, on Wii U it looks like Robin wears a nice, velvety robe. On the 3DS it's just a huge downgrade where you don't know what material it is. That's okay, though. Brings me back to the roots. Realism on 3DS with vibrant primaries, lmao. 3DS version looks nice in-person. It's the game that looks better than the Wii U's counterpart when you're actually playing it.

I enjoy both styles and both games as different games, instead of both being the same.
Looking at Smash for 3ds as its own game, without the outlines it looks damn fine for 3ds standards. Where the game really shines in my opinion is that glorious 60fps. Even if you hate the style, you have to admit the game looks great in pure motion. And I'm not talking about youtube videos, I mean seeing the real deal. It looks very tasteful and it looks like the designers have worked very very hard to make the game stand on its own, and it does.

Like it has been mentioned before, all games look much better on the 3ds itself.

I heard many people say that Kid Icarus Uprising looked ugly when watching the trailers, but when they saw it on the 3ds itself they said it actually looked fantastic.

It's also why we haven't seen that much 3ds footage in the trailers aside from E3 2013/2014, and the smash direct. The art style could potentially benefit more from 3d as well.

With all that said, I actually enjoy the art style of the 3ds version. Feels like what brawl should've been. A slight realism but still having those cartoony elements.

The 3DS is graphically incapable to be as beautiful as the Wii U version's.
So they took a different direction, and I think it was the best they could've.
