I feel convinced. Brawl should only differ from Smash aesthetically. :P

Since the announcement of Brawl, I've had this lingering fear of it shedding the competitive speed and physics engine of smash... Lately, with the updates - something has given me the reassurance that Brawl will be an overhaul of smash only aesthetically. The recent screens of mario's all too familiar recovery, glimpses of the combat in the trailer... I don't know, I feel the guys over at Ninty are more than comfortable with the gameplay engine entirely and are going to focus their sequel retouches on the graphics, gameplay options, character roster, and other non-engine factors.

Maybe I'm just stupidly optimistic, but something tells me that the smash we all know and love is there. I'm thinking some slight character adjustments are in order, but I know when I get my hands on Marth 2.0 it'll be familiar territory for me, :p. New tier lists are going to be a freaking blast.

Anyone else feelin' good!?

New update, Control Styles, now I feel happy.
Aye, something tells me Sakurai prefers the gamecube controller for a lot more than the rumble, though :p

I think the wiimote controls will lean more towards casual play - Sakurai knows the gamecube controller will still offer the most precise and refined control mechanism for serious smashers.

It makes me both happy and sad,I was hoping that they would implement some more things in the game engine.

But who knows, maybe some more functionality has been added to the system to actually allow better aerial combat that has yet to be shown.

I hope so,either way,it's all good.

Most fighting sequels are very similar to their predecessors. Granted, at high levels of play there may be great differences, but at least at first glance they almost always appear VERY similar. I've never expected Brawl to be dramatically different. Melee worked well and the developers know that. The only thing I'm worried about is what if the game is "easily mastered" or there's something in it the developers didn't catch that makes the game broken. But that's true for almost every game. The competitive community will always take a game to the extreme and figure out every intricacy of it.

I have every confidence that Brawl will be a great game. Will it be better than Melee, and will it be viable on a competitive tournament level? Now that's a different question...

Nintendo is hyper-aware of melee's crossover success as a tournament viable game though. So far, there is nothing that we have seen that should show us a dramatic shift in the gameplay design favoring the casual style. Even the trailer seems high-paced and technical..

The kind of gameplay revamps I want are things that add more options to competitive gameplay. Casual gamers will be more than satisfied with pretty graphics, new items, characters, stages, modes, etc - but the hardcore players are probably looking for a bit of innovation; something like when air dodging (and coincidentally, wavedashing) was added to Smash. There's room for new technique, and I think Ninty's going to satisfy our cravings.

Just as in Gulity Gear XX Slash, the latest from the Guilty Gear series was altered alot with the realease of Guilt Gear XX Accent Core.Accent core introduced tech sliding,Force Breaks,Slash Back etc.Yet the general game engine remained the same, but the changes in the game altered the way that high level players play.

Perhaps the general engine of Brawl will remain the same, but some of the changes will alter the way be play the game entirely.

I do agree... personally, I was all ways hoping they'd update Smash Bros. Melee a few years after release with adjusted characters for balance. Other fighting games do it, so why not? Thus, I would not be unhappy with Brawl being Melee part 2.

But I do think that your "Marth 2.0" is going to be an Ike 1.0...

Searching for my own way of the ninja.
They'd better work to refine the engine some more.
I'm sick of Fox and Marth being inherently better than other characters.
I demand some balance. But all of the other stuff is what people care about more, true.
But please, for Lord's sake, give us some refinement in the gameplay engine...

I'm with Destiny Smasher. I honestly think that Melee is a somewhat badly made game. Which is why I'm looking forward to Brawl so much. :p

melee is a well made game, it just shouldve been tweaked more.

brawl will be more than an update. it think thats evident. i hope the tournament scene dosent try to reject all new things in the game and essentially play melee with new characters.

melee with new chars/balance tweeks would be fun. but its appeal would wear off way faster.

and heres hoping the game has periodical balance updates.

I hope they make it so character models don't intercept. That way, we don't have to deal with "OMG IT LOOKS LIKE HIS HEAD IS IN HIS CROTCH OMG LOOK AT THAT HAHAHAHA THAT IS SO ****ING FUNNY OMG LOL!!!!"
