*For Starters: Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, or this sounds like a dumb question!*

Okay I'm a tad confused...
How do these tournaments work. Are they just for fun? Are they done online?? Do I have to pay to be in one? Do you win anything special if you win? Is there separate tournaments for those who aren't as experienced/skilled as the others?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless a tourney is in the Online Tournament Listings section of the forum, it is offline. They are not just for fun, though people would not go if they did not enjoy it. You pay money to enter, and the winner gets a certain amount of the total money everyone payed. 2nd and 3rd place also win money, though not as much. In general, larger tournaments have tougher competition, since there is more money and thus pros are more attracted to it. Even if you aren't good enough to do well at a tourney, you should still go. Nothing helps you improve quickly like tournament experience does. Hope that helps.

Thanks that clarifies, but I just don't wanna enter a tournament and end up loosing my money, because I've seen some at entry fees of 15-30 dollars... And I doubt I'll be able to win... Any tips?

Go to smashfests... they are free...and people that wish to be good as well as sometimes the people that are good will show up...well....usually.... Also online is free...

And when you feel confident then you may play in a tourney if you wish...

As for the separate skill ranked tourneys...They sadly do not exist...

aww that sucks. Could anyone help me sign up for some online tourneys around here?
Most of them seem to be well into the tournament or already have a confirmed entry list...

When you go to a tourney, play tons of friendlies. Play a wide variety of people who play a wide variety of characters. Even if you don't win the tourney (which you probably won't), you'll get invaluable experience.

If your goal is simply to go out there and make money, you're going to miss an integral facet of the Smash scene--the community.

Smart alec comments are not needed...
He speaks the truth tho. The best competition is at paid tournaments, and the best way to get better is to play these people. If you're at the point where you're not very good at all, then you should prolly find smashers near your area and play with them on a regular basis. Check the regional boards for that.

So basically what happens is. You play amongst your friends and if you win against them you gain this confidence that you're the best smash player around. Then you go online or from word of mouth you hear about these tournaments. Walk in and stare at the weird looking people and think to yourself "wow these guys look like they suck!" Sit down on a friendly to warm up your godlike skill, get *****, john for the first time in your tourney career, play in bracket, get *****, repeat john. Then go on youtube to find out that you're actually one of the worst smash players alive, practice, get *****, repeat, become better.
