As has been stated earlier in the thread, there are plenty of ways that Lucas and Ness can differ. I suggested that Lucas might be made a support character who actually uses his own moves from Mother 3, like the Shields, Offense/Defense Up, Refresh, etc. Regularly, his attacks would be weaker than Ness', so you'd have to balance fighting and staying back and using PSI to boost yourself. While it doesn't scream high tier, it would make him different from Ness, no?

It doesn't matter much, it's been translated correctly many times. Anyone who knows Japanese can say that it does indeed say that Sakurai was going to replace Ness for Lucas in Melee. Mother 3 was canceled for the N64, so he couldn't do it and had to settle for Ness.

I think the one moderately strong argument the Ness naysayers have is this quote:

Notice the first word in that sentence. It's no deconfirmation, but the word choice certainly seems. . . limiting.

It's because there are plenty of other Mother characters that are more unique, who would be much better to include. Ness would be taking up extra character slot for the Mother Franchise. I mean, just look at Lucas and Ness, they're pretty much the same character. Lucas is really just an update to Ness, just like TP Link is an update to OOT Link. including him as anything but an alternate costume would be useless.

There are many other more unique characters from the Mother series that I would rather see than Ness.

Paula is the most important character in Earthbound, just try beating the final boss without her.(She proves her importance again and again and again thoughout the story of earthbound) I don't feel like stating my arguments against Ness.....again.

I think people either ignore all the comments that were made or are such Ness fanboy's they can't see anything else. All you have to do is read to find out why people want Ness out.

Ness and Lucas are clones of each other in their respective MOTHER games. Sure Ness could have a unique moveset by stealing moves from his party members, but I'd honestly rather see Ness be an alt costume of Lucas to make room for other unique MOTHER/Earthbound characters, I think it silly to waste a moveslot on Ness when an alt costume would be just fine.

Anyways, Ness has alot of PK moves himself, I'm pretty sure they can translate some of his moves. (Completely special makeover.) As long as Lucas is kinda like the Luigi of Earthbound, all will be good. Think about it. I can see PK Fire and Flash fixed, perhaps Thunder.

First off, the reason why Ness has Paula's moves is because Ness does not learn very many offensive moves at all. He only learns PK Rockin and Flash if I'm not mistaken. This could be translated, like, perhaps Paula taught Ness these moves, and thats why he has them (Sort of a reason.). I can still see him having PK Thunder, Ice, Fire, or Flash, only HUGELY fixed so that they can seem correct. Lucas, could have similar specials to it, kinda like Luigi. In other words, they could have the same specials, BUT. Different effects. For instance. Ness's PK Flash could be his B. In other words, Ness charges up an electric ball. Storable, but only for a few seconds. If time runs out, you get paralyzed. However, if YOU fire it on the enemy, it has a chance of paralyzing THEM. Its entirely possible
