See, here's my problem...

I've been playing video games reguarly all my life - I'm 15 now. It use to be all that I'd do pretty much. Why? Same reason as you guys...they're so much fun! Well, that use to be the case...

I simply CAN'T enjoy video games anymore. Here's why though...I learnt about the competitive communties...here for the SSB series, TSC for all the Sonic games, ZSR for OoT, and most of all SDA - the Speed Demo's archive. I've been going through all of it, watching all of the awesome tricks everyone pulled off and the people holding the records seem like a god among gamers...

Everytime I play a game I don't enjoy them now. I immediately attempt to complete the level as fast as possible (like a time attack/speed run situation) or try to unlock everything asap etc rather than enjoying the game. It ruins it for me.

I completed three of my favourite games recently; Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, and Banjo Tooie. I hoped they would fill me with joy like they did in the past. For Ocarina of Time, I tried to kill every boss as fast as possible, for Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, I tried to simply finish the game as fast as possible. If I don't and just take my time, enjoying everything and the surroundings like I use to, I get frustrated and disappointed. I then have these thoughts in my head "You're crap at games, "Haha, you're way too slow" etc. It's really weird and unusal, but most of all it just leaves me feeling negative and usually switching the game off...

I tried taking a break from games and it hasn't helped. It's as if I'm trying to be one of those "gods" and own at every game I'm playing or something rather than enjoying the game...

I dunno what to do. I've tried picking up other hobbies for a while, but it's not really working. I want the thrill I use to have when playing games. It was awesome!

I don't know what to do.

I can't enjoy them...

Play Endless Ocean.

You may not like it, BUT, its a game where you CAN'T do anything like what you are having trouble with. Think of it like this, you are having trouble, you can't stop running! you always run and you never walk, and so you go on a camping trip on a mountain. You can't run here, there is no where to run, its all jagged, hurts your feet to run, and you could fall pretty easily if you tried. this is what Endless Ocean can bring for you. You CAN'T rush to finish a goal, you CAN'T do a speed run of the game, and you CAN'T be competative in any way. Endless Ocean is the cure you need, and it cures me from time to time as well.

I know what you mean. If you stop to savor the game, you feel like a noob, but if you rush right through it, you feel like you're not even playing the same game anymore.

My solution: feel like a noob. The enjoyment I get from savoring games is why I play games.

Don't worry, you're not alone.
indeed

i suffer from this as well.
the competitive nature of things has taken the fun out of most things, though the competitive nature of some things are still enjoyable for me.

i'm not sure how i can help you. all i can do is wish you the best in recovering the fun you once had in video games.

Pick up an RPG. That'll slow you down.

...

Unless there exist people that actually try to speedrun THOSE. I mean... I know of LLGs or any other combinations of letters, but speedrunning?
Pokemon some odd color or another; Caterpie or Wurmple speed run through.

In all honesty; If you can't enjoy a game try making one. I've played around with Mega Man engine and I give mad props to the programmers for not killing themselves.

When my friends and I get tired of regular Brawl we just do FFA's with all the explosives turned on. You should try it sometime, playing the game in some unique or different way.

Like you, I tend to rush through my games. I got Borderlands, which is partly rpg (btw, people DO speedrun rpgs). I rushed through it :(

I can't stand slow games, though. I tried Mass Effect but gave up after a week.

I suggest you get games that don't have endings. A sandbox game like GTA would work; same goes for online FPS games like COD6. I'm personally forcing myself to be patient and finish Chrono Trigger, which I've liked so far.

In short: get a sandbox game or online game. Or push yourself to slooooow down.

I feel the same way. Classic games just don't feel the same as they once did. Single player games are usually just way too easy and lonely. I stick with multiplayer games like Brawl and Melee and play it with other people. It hasn't gotten old yet.

Yeah, I JUST asked a friend of mine online after I posted that and he did confirm they existed...

Huh.

Well, I couldn't imagine how'd that go. Maybe I don't want to. I mean... normal LLGs seem like torture as is...

Well, I guess listen to everyone else then, because I don't have anything right now. :dizzy:

I just beat Super Bomberman 2 for the SNES for the first time... a game I've had since I was at least 4-6 years old... I am 17 years old right now...

Go play some old games, preferably ones that you haven't finished.

Just trying to give a suggestion.

I have this problem too, I've become incredibly picky with video games, and usually getting too competitive at times to enjoy them. At least RPGs seem to be great for me still.

Been playing Tales of Vesperia, and for old RPGs, Breath of Fire.
