How useful is directing Marth's up B?

For those who don't know, smashing either left or right after you use up B directs his up B with a curve that goes backwards after it goes forwards, or ends up going forwards more overall.

I see it as having use in aiding recovery, but just for the extra boost in horizontal movements when side b and shieldbreaker don't fit the situation. It might help a small bit in avoiding lips on stages (Castle Siege and Pokemon stadium, I'm not sure how much of a difference it'll make on FD), but the timing is incredibly fast and it seems pretty difficult to do (or maybe I just haven't worked on it enough :/)

Anyways, are there any thoughts/impressions on this ability?

1. Recovery
2. Combo finisher
3. Defense tactic (breaking out of multi-hit attacks)

Ah.. anything else?

Yes, but which of those benefit from DIRECTING your up B. As in literally changing the path you take during the strike.

I know the general uses for up B, but I'm trying to think of uses from the path changing.

(To see exactly what I mean, go into practice mode, turn the speed down, do a normal up B, then attempt to do a reverse up B. You'll notice that the arc of the curve from the slash is different, and it is also different from standard up B if you mash the direction you're facing; you get more horizontal distance)

I know I don't really have a name for myself on the boards, but I am not some random newbie who hasn't played marth ever.

In Melee, quickly changing the direction as you stated did a "reverse Dolphin Slash," which gave the attack a horizontal trajectory, and could be used as an off stage gimp since you were then facing the ledge and could recover while killing off the foe.

In Brawl, it is more or less useless since it changes the arc visually, but not the hitbox. Dolphin Slash typically sends them horizontally now. However, if you are stuck at a peculiar angle under the infamous Final D lip, you can use this method where doing a reverse via control stick (the one with extra horizontal boost) would gimp one.

The directional boosts serve as that, and are used in recovery based on situation, but usually toward the stage is used. A completely vertical Dolphin Slash is good on stages like Pokemon Stadium I or Final Destination.

Naturally, reverse w/ horizontal boost can be used out of shield for attacks like Wolf's Fsmash and such that may pass your shield. Also, if it hits at the handle of the Falchion that Marth swings back under is legs before he ascends, it'll send them straight up like a normal DS in Melee. The true reverse does not change the hitbox and will not do this.
