So I consider myself a decent player, quick reflexes and I play Falco. I mostly do aerial attacks and smashes. When I was taught (10years ago) I was taught to avoid using the shield. I still have the habit of not shielding to this day (habit Im trying to break).

I played friendly games at anime north, and got ruined by this one guy. He moved double the speed as me, as I didnt understand how he moved so fast. I still got 2 kills off him (stock 5) so I was happy.

I did a search on wavedash but no hits on how to do it, but rather where to find it.

I watched the video http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=317784 and noticed he too was moving a lot faster than I, but people were saying he needs to learn how to wavedash / waveshrine

I also read Mogwai's tutorial on Falco http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=203781 (Thanks Mogwai for this) and have been working on the lasers with the short hop (never heard of a short hop before). Takes a lot of getting used to especially combining all 3 moves of SH + laser + FF . I naturally use FF a lot when playing, but just practicing the new styles.

Does anyone know of a page that shows how to wavedash/waveshrine? Are there other "advanced techniques" that I should work on? Right now Im doing 2player (falco, other) with 2 controllers just practicing the laser.

Any advice/tips would be appreciated :)

heh thanks. Took a 2hours off and on to be able to hit kirby (while ducking) fairly frequently with the gun. The thread mogai has shows me what I was doing wrong. I couldnt land properly for the longest time.

edit: Im assuming there are no demonstrations of a slow motion wave dash / wave land / wave shrine for falco? It keeps looking like a regular air shield :@

If you airdodge, you're hitting R/L too slow. Empty jumps means too fast. I suggest trying out a character like samus or ICs just to mess around a bit with Wavedashing. They tend to have very pronounced WDs and the timing for theirs is pretty natural. Falco has a slight pause between jumping and hitting a shoulder button that can seem awkward at first.

Anyways many people suggest wavelanding first. That is just airdodging into the ground. The closer you are to the ground when you start, the better. Ideally you will not even see the airdodge animation, just get the slide from it. Don't worry about waveshining until you feel more comfortable with wavedashing/wavelanding in general. When you do, then go for waveshines. Different characters have different wavedash timings based on how quick they jump (Fox is the fastest, Bowser is the slowest). Waveland is all based on how close to the ground the character is before the airdodge. Don't forget that airdodging straight down will send you nowhere. Add some direction (down and to the right) to get some distance. The more horizontal your wavedash, the more ground you will cover.

Practicing in short 15-30 min bursts is usually better for cementing your techskill.

in the past hour or so, Ive L-button mashed 5 wave dash/wave lands at most. Ive been doing falco, and every time I read up about waves everyone says luigi. Sadly I just got a memory card today, so no characters. Falco is one of the easiest/fastest to unlock with 100man melee using fox sideB. Will switchup to samus.

Initially I was using 2 controllers (for dead 2nd player) but it got incredibly boring and I decided to use a lvl 9 comp instead.

I tried the jump, down a smash attack with a l-cancel / waveland. ( I havent l-cancelled before either). With the joystick pointing down right/down left

I take breaks to answer texts, read more and talk to the gf on the phone but thats about it lol. Hungry to learn

heh thanks bud. Im not giving up, ordered pizza + wings for a night full of single player smash and learning these tricks :) .

I got a close buddy of mine who is really good at "learning someones game". First few games I destroyed him, now he ***** me game after game. When searching online, its apparently a famous matchup... Falco vs Marth.

Lately Ive been finishing the kill in the air with a well-aimed firebird attack while the enemy is knocked upwards. Generally the ceiling of the game allows this to become a finisher

Wavedashing: Pick Fox, Sheik, Pichu and try their instant wavedashes. Next, try Marth or Falco's slightly delayed ones. You should have it down in a week or so.

just played a game with Fox... was able to do it with 15%-20% accuracy. Pretty decent for a first time.

sadly with Falco Im below 1%

edit: so does that mean with Falco Im pressing L too fast?

Luigi is just mentioned because his goes the farthest, not because his timing is the best. Don't mash the L button, time it.

1. Pick a jump button you like. X or Y. I prefer Y.
2. Press jump
3. Almost immediately after press R/L. I highly recommend making it the shoulder button you don't use to shield.

You aren't hitting them at the exact same time, just right after each other. Think about the time it takes to blink between the presses for most characters. Falco's is sliiiightly longer.

Also mix up what you practice. Try wavedashing for a bit, then move on to practicing short hopping consistently. Then practice SHL. Then practice short hop fast falls. Then back to wavedashing. Etc. Always try to L-cancel every aerial attack you do. If you miss it, try to repeat it again a few times to get a feeling for it. From full jumps, from short hops. Fastfalling, not fast falling. Hitting someone, not hitting someone. It just takes practice practice practice.

Edit: If you can do Fox but not Falco, then yes, you are hitting L too quickly.
