How To Play with Platforms ?
A mini-guide by Blad01

So, platforms game is pretty important with Ganondorf, since it allows to devellop his aerial game even more. Let's see what the Dorf is capable with platforms !

Battlefield being a starter, and thus the most played stage with platforms, i'm gonna take it as an exemple.

- Under the Platforms -

1) Diverse Information

  • USmash hits through the platform.

  • All short hoped aerials hit trhough the platform.
  • FJ (Full Jumped) Uair and Bair go trhough the platform and don't suffer from any lag. FJ Fair, Dair and Nair can't be "autocanceled" trhough an platform.
  • FJ Dair / Nair (DI away from the platform) to DJ (Double-Jump) Uair / Bair autocancel at landing on a platform.

  • Up B can land on the top platform, and thus being a bit less punishable.
  • SH Gerudo can catch the opponents standing on a platform.

2) Uses

a) Attack pressure

You have many options when your opponent is standing on a platform, and shielding.

If he is on the top platform, you can Full Jump Uair, and DJ Uair again to pressure him. The second Uair will maybe catch him off-guard.

If he is on a side platform, you have even more options : SH Gerudo, SH Aerial, FH Uair (or Bair) that you can eventually buffer into a DTilt.
My favorite option is pressure the shield with USmash, that will make him slide and fall off the platform. From here, you can catach him with an other USmash, sometimes a Jab / Ftilt, or a SH Uair if you expect a jump. But my favorite option, and the most guaranteed one, is to follow with a Dash Attack.
There is also another very good option that we should use more : The full jump Dair (DIes away from the platform) followed by a double-jump Uair / Bair, Gerudo or even Dair if you think that it could break the opponent's shield.

The platforms can also be good to setup good follow-ups from a grab : Dthrow to send your opponent on a platform, and Uthrow to put him into a difficult position, where you can easily juggle him.

Also, you should know that on certain characters, a grounded Gerudo sends your opponent on a side platform (Lucas, Ness, and some others), which means you have a free Uair. ^^

b) Killing

The two options that can really kill early here are SH Dair and USmash.

The SH Dair doesn't need platforms to kill for sure. But here, if you miss, it's just unpunishable this time. :D

The Usmash is very good, since it is sweetspotted. Thus, it allows early kills if you kept if fresh : It kills Mario at 85%.

c) Defense

Well, the first defense option that i can think of is Up B out of shield. It's a decent defense option, and if you land on the top platform, it's less easy to punish.

But there is another defensive use of platforms : You may know that some moves like G&W's Dair can touch Ganondorf through a platform. If a G&W knows that, he's going to Dair into the platform, since it seems pretty safe to him. But actually, if you crouch, you can't get hit. And then you can punish the lag with USmash, Uair, or begin a shield pressure.

Another thing, that concerns the mindgames : If you are waiting on platform, and that you're facing a Link. If you knows that he is going to Dair, just wait a little, then fall off the platform, and punish his lag with USmash. :)

- On the Platforms -

1) Diverse Information

  • Full Jump and Double Jump to go on a side platform, and full double jump on the top player.
  • You can perform a Fair when you fall off a platform, and it's pretty useful since it covers a large range, has high knockback and good shield hitlag.
  • None of Ganon's aerials autoncancel when you fall off a platform.
  • From the side platforms, you can drop down and Bair. It covers your back, and can even hit someone standing ont the same platform. (you can't drop down and Fair)
  • From the top platform, you can drop down and C-stick down, and your Dair will finish before you reach the ground.
  • From the top platform : SH Fair has no lag when it land on a side platform.
  • Wizkick from a side platform to the other is an easy Wizkick Cancel.
  • Utilt hit a character below if he's taller than Mario.

Coming soon...
