I want to learn how to play fox and I searched up the claw hold which apparently is using thumb for c stick, index for b, middle for y, and not sure for A...
people say that the ring and pinky are not used is that right? then do I use index to jump out of shield? also how do I do a shine grab then?
Sorry if this stuff has been posted, but I couldn't find stuff/don't know how.

The method of clawing that I know about is to use your thumb for the C-stick, the A button and the B button, while using your index finger for Y, which would enable you to use your middle finger to press Z.

I do exactly what jolteon said. You can rest your thumb on the c stick so you can move it with the base of your thumb and press a and b with the tip of your thumb, and then use your pointer to jump with y, and your middle to grab with z. For me it's very natural, I've been clawing like this for my whole career.

I sometimes switch to claw for JC usmash since it allows for more control. Otherwise my hand is at "standard" position. I grab with Z just fine.

If you are going to claw, don't claw 24/7, only when you need it.

its gotten to the point now that i simply cannot play fox without claw. didnt think it'd work, but its been over a year now and it just feels natural.

its also important to mention that i play bass, and i use the same 3 fingers on my right hand for plucking as i do for playing melee. without my fingers already being trained previously, i would have near the same success.

If I wanted to claw, I would probably do it like this:
- Thumb on the C-stick
- Index finger on A/B
- Middle finger on Y
- Ring/Pinky on Z

The biggest thing I dislike about the idea of using claw is you can only use one trigger. If you ever decide to incorporate PSing into your game by trigger tricking, you completely lose the ability to light shield. The only thing I wish I could claw for is for LH attacks, ledgedashes, and drifting aerials in the opposite direction that you have to press to input them on the control stick (I suck at going from Y to the C-stick to do stuff like fadeaway fairs or approaching bairs).

JC grab? Dash X with middle, hold L, A with index

Shine grab? Down B with index, X with middle, hold L, A with index

I've tried playing claw for a bit (never used ring/pinky), I think you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with
