How to Get Into Competitive Melee Alone

I've been playing Melee for years, but I want to get start playing competitively now. I intend to main Marth/Fox because they're the characters I've played the most with and am most comfortable with, and they seem to be pretty popular on the competitive scene. The problem is, I don't know any competitive smashers, and Melee is the only smash game that's unplayable over wi-fi. I intend to practice a lot alone, but that can only get me so far. Is there any way I can become tournament-ready practicing alone, or is it impossible? And if not, what should I do?

You can practice combos and techs alone, but there's no substitute for real match experience with another human.

SSB4 should have pretty robust online play.

Play Street FIghter 3 3rd Strike online. You'll have a lot of fun learning how to win at fighting games, particularly learning how to predict an opponent. Fighting games are about making the right decisions. This game has the best net code bar none

That is, if he/she can transfer those SF3:TS Skills to Melee.

They're 2 very different games.

Where is your area phokda? Have you tried using smashboards?

also, try Project M. its very similar

They're both fighting games. Street Fighter focuses on the neutral game which is what transfers easily between fighting games. It'll teach you how to find habits the opponent's doing and how to keep changing strategies to stay unpredictable

If you have a decent computer and internet connection, you can try playing on dolphin over netplay.

This is probably your best bet if you don't have anybody to play with.

Try looking into the scene in your area, there's Facebook groups that can help connect you to other players. Most of the time if you post in these groups looking for a play partner, you will find one.

And if you can't find anybody, get people to play! Ask your friends, make posters for your school/neighborhood/mall/rec center/wherever.

This.

If you don't know anyone who plays, find people who play :p Practicing alone is more boring and less effective than practicing with people - it may not seem so at first, maybe even for quite a while, but once you've got a lot of the stuff down so that you are running out of goals, it will become hard to find motivation.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but there's a guy on Smashboards who goes by the name of achilles1515.
He's made a bunch of wonderful codes that are crazy useful for practicing Melee alone. You need to have a softmodded Wii to be able to use these codes, though. If you're interested check out his thread here:
