How does the ssb64 scene feel about ssb64 Virtual Console for the Wii?

I've played ssb64 ever since it came out so I'm not really anyone random. I've also played on Kaillera quite often before (my name was "desu" but I haven't gone on for a long time; I was a Samus main on Kaillera but a Falcon main on the console). I know my techskills and I've played competitively.

I tried out the injected ssb64 virtual console long before the official came out and didn't like it as the controls were mapped differently and there were graphic glitches. But recently, as outdated on the Wii scene that I am, found out ssb64 (US) came out about half a year ago and started to play it. It was just amazing. It brought back a lot of memories and to top it off, it was very smooth. The control mappings weren't awkward too (comparing it to Melee - Z to grab, L+R to shield/lag cancel).

The only thing that's missing right now is Ocarina codes (its basically action replay for the Wii). I'd like to play on Battlefield again. A good addition would be Final Destination as well but I'm more in favor of Battlefield. If anyone reading this that can make this possible, please do (it may require a Gecko OS). http://geckocodes.org/ are the lists of code but no one worked on the US version nor did I see anything Battlefield related. :(

Anyways, how do you guys feel about the ssb64 virtual console (genuine not injected)? Some things are a tiny bit harder to perform, such as perfect multishines/JC shines, since the game runs much more smoothly (the game feels much faster than the original). I personally like it more than the original. I can't compare it to Kaillera because the VC doesn't have an online feature. But, it definitely is the best for offline matches.

^ i'm pretty sure the ssb64 virtual console runs at 60fps like the console version. I heard it lags less in teams though.

I don't really care for it purely because i can't use an n64 controller.

Its very good for the "old machinery" problem, but some people dont like to use the wii/GC controllers to play.

It doesn't feel right for me. I tried it at Pound 4 ... I kept stickhopping when I was dashdancing.
If you're running a tournament, you're going to go with the N64 version or you'll get people complaining about not being able to use the N64 controller...~_~

Yep I’ve got the Virtual Console version of SSB64 and I think it’s great. Ultimately it may even become more popular than the N64 version simply because of the number of Wii’s sold and the fact that GameCube controllers are more durable and easier to come by that the N64 pads.

I believe most people prefer to play Brawl on their Wii but for just ten bucks SSB64 makes a pretty nice DL to have something similar but different to play with friends.

There's always the option where you can convert your N64 controller's jack to a GC jack.

Edit: ^^^^ and yes, GC controllers are much more durable which is why I like it. My n64 controllers are pretty much dead. They're all really stiff. I've cleaned them out numerous times.

It doesn't lag at all for teams actually. :)

Here's the link for N64 controller to GC adapter: http://www.raphnet.net/electronique/x2wii/index_en.php

Buy it here: http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/n64_to_wii/index.php?category=

Edit2:

Also, I made a custom order before. I had the person of this website [http://spawnlinux.dyndns.org/Bliss-Box/products.html] create a custom design for me (n64/GC controller to USB adapter). Be sure to check it out as I had a very good experience with this seller.

Here's a picture of it: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/DentyneICE/blissworn.jpg

the problem with the adapters is the button maps are still going to be different since they modified the input for the virtual console.

edit: i didn't realize the adapter supported a bunch of different mappings. nevermind. either way, i still don't have a wii

I was playing ssb64 on virtual console yesterday and when I played link vs mario it had a lot of frame skips in the match due to so many fireballs and bombs etc

Honestly, I remember when I played the N64 one back in 2001 or so, and I say the N64 one had just a LITTLE better frame rate.

It's so stupid how re-releases of games almost always run slower in some way. **** lazy programmers/companies that don't give adequate time/money to fix problems.

I agree to some extent because we see what can be accomplished when some real effort is put in to bringing a port up to date. I’m talking about the Perfect Dark Redux that was released on Xbox Live Arcade which outdoes the original N64 version in every conceivable way and also includes on-line play.

Were you playing an injected or a genuine version? And what kind of display were you playing on?

This is Nintendo. Did you honestly expect anything other than a half-assed effort?

It's the best game on virtual console. The only game that comes close is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars.

But yeah, by what I gather it's not a particularly good idea to try throwing a SSB tourney from VC, seeing as how there are lots of glitches and frame skips to contend with. That's so sad.

I hope you're kidding. Very few console games have local multiplayer at all, and games from previous consoles are superior on emulator and allowing each player any controller they wanna use.
Do you play local multiplayer SSB64 on your PC?

I have a 32" TV I use for gaming which is nice for my friends and me to gather around when we play any local multiplayer game and I've got lots in my collection.

On my friend's laptop, we hooked it up to a TV and played some SSB64 there, which was cool because we each got to use our own controllers without worrying about damaging n64 controllers.

What's the point of having an N64 controller if you don't use it? Just for collecting?
They’re starting to get so expensive that people just bring them out on special occasions. That’s part of the reason why the VC version of SSB64 is so nice as you can use the GameCube pad or the Classic Controller. I haven’t played it with the CC Pro yet though.

^ they don't have to be expensive, you just have to know where to look

living in a rural area has its ups and downs, i have to drive hours if i want to play console matches but i can find a lot of n64 controllers/accessories in good shape at secondhand stores because no one around here is looking for them. i'd go crazy having a nice controller around and not using it.

So my 8 controllers (6 basically mint condition, 2 pretty used) are valuable? That sounds silly when you look at them...pretty unwieldy bits of plastic, methinks. I love them for sentimental value alone, really.

the only "valuable" n64 controllers worth collecting not for playing are the nintendo power controllers (gold power 100, banana bunch, and millenium 2000),
I collect n64 stuff and same with a friend at school, the best part about collecting is finding stuff at lower prices than what they should be

Back on topic: Do the competitive SSB64 players believe they’ll ever be able to accept the VC version simply because it’s easier to include at Brawl or Melee tourneys?

I’m a casual player that’s not even all that good at any of the Smash Bros. game so my opinion won’t count for much, but my friends and I think that SSB64VC is just dandy. At first it took a little getting used to using the GameCube pad with it but now it actually feels a little more natural than the N64 controller to us.

Gamecube controller is terrible for SSB64

There's no terrible controller unless its made way off from the original. All it takes is some getting used to. I could say N64 controllers are horrible for ssb64 because it breaks down from frequent use or it becomes too stiff to make it playable. Regardless, controllers aren't the issue as their are n64 to GC adapters with button mapping. The whole point of this topic is to see if ssb64 VC is viable for smash64 tournies if it ever happens. Not only can you play both Brawl (and all the modified Brawl projects out there) and Melee, but you can always go old school and play ssb64 too. Its much more convenient to bring one system.

From how this topic went so far, let me come up with the pros and cons.

Pros:
-convenience; can play all 3 smash games
-smooth/lagless multiplayer (which is really good because you can actually do doubles now)
-n64 to gc adapter for n64 controller users

Cons:
-frameskips (I'd say this is its biggest downfall. Everything else is minor)
-must have an n64 to gc adapter if you want to use n64 controller
-some people don't have a wii (isn't much of a problem because you can depend on others for setups since not everyone always brings setups even if they own the console)
-n64 controllers are harder to come by
-n64 controllers wear out faster than GC controllers

Don't know where this falls in:
-game is more sensitive (probably because of the GC controller)
-feels more fast paced (I'd say this is more of a pro if anything)
-some people may have a wii but no n64

I like the GameCube controller personally. I consider it on par with the Playstation 2’s Dual Shock controller.

Regardless, if you use the GameCube pad to play Melee or Brawl it won’t take you too long to become accustomed to it in SSB64VC.

GC sticks wear out too but yes, they're much more durable. I know Melee players that went through many GC controllers already. I have one that's starting to do stupid things on me such as tilting to the left on its own. If I use Falco and SH laser to the right, it would sometimes laser to the left.

the pikachu controllers that come with the hey you pikachu system are also pretty valuable if they are in good condition and they are slightly different in the US than in Japan.
