How do you make a sig?

Well Ive made only one(crudly made) sig before. Using GIMP I made two renders of sonic and kirby. I resized them to fit my image. I then used gradients from GIMP(its a better idea to use brushes though, I just didnt have brushes at the time and I still have no idea how to download the, plus I have no internet at the moment). Anyways once you choose your colors for the gradient presto your done... but when you insert your renders you must make a new layer. This goes as well for your background.
