How do I Download my MP3 Music on my Computer into my Phone Ringtones

Alright so if the title didnt specify and your confused as to what my question is is that today I bought a micro SD card for my Samsung Finesse so I can put photos and music on it. So I downloaded a whole bunch of music off of CD's and I noticed a file for ringtones. So I decided to input some of my music in that file. But when i get off of it and I looked for the song I inputed in my ringtones file and they arent there. So I asked my father for help and he said that since they were MP3 songs they couldnt be inputed in my ringtones and that they had to be bought. So I need to know am I doing anything wrong or is it true you cant put MP3 songs as a ringtone?

And if that didn't help you, most older cellphones do not use mp3 for ringtones. Try converting your music into midi, that is the old standard ;D
