I adjusted in pretty much 2 matches. I didn't play the demo extensively, only enough to get some matches in there (really, 2 minutes items, full blast and not being able to change controls -- why bother). Once I changed my controls to exactly how I wanted them, playing this game is just how Smash has always been for me. Granted there's not comfort of the controller, but it's on a handheld so that's to overlook. Only problem really is trying to get tilts with the circle pad. Aside from tilting, I'm having a blast.

Not sure where all the complaints are coming from with "i can't get used to...". Sounds silly. Less comfortable, but it's pretty much the same as it's always been,

I found the static controls were funky due to the button layout. I actually ended up customizing it to have the special and regular attacks separated by the jumps, rather than the usual combo where theyre next to each other.
Dont know why, i dont have any active games for my 3DS except this (since i basically never put my Monster Hunter 3U save on the 3DS lol) but for some reason i keep defaulting to B to jump and Y for specials even though that wasnt the config.

Now my only issue is even though i use an XL, my hands are too big lol. i need a foam pad or something to grip the back with.

You could turn off the items by doing the Final Destination thing in the demo, but as far as controls, I'm pretty used to it because I played the demo too much. But, some characters I just keep messing up because the circle stick messes up or I don't move the circle stick enough.. or something like that. But, they did a great job.

Turning that tap jump off (that was set in stone for the demo) helped a lot for my up tilts and for the other tilts I just slightly press the circle pad in the direction of the tilt that I want to come out. After a few rounds in the training room they seemed to flow out easily for the combos that I'd work them into.

I turned off the tilt jump immediately, and little later I decided that this would be a good opportunity to try out a different jump lay out. I switched my Jump to R and my shield to X. This way I find it a lot easier to quickly do air attacks, since I don't have to move my thumb from X to jump and then A to attack, and I find short hopping easier on a bumper. I'm still getting use to it, because obviously I've never even had the option to do something as weird as making my jump R, but I think that it will be a lot better once I break old habits.

Turned off tap to jump and all has been well since, didn't change anything else. I put a good 14+ hours into the demo, so I wasn't really looking to do much besides turn off tap to jump anyway.

I HATE THIS. GIVE ME BACK MY NORMAL CONTROLLER.

Ok so it has got a little better since I have got used to it but I still mess up basic stuff such as smashing (I MISS MY C-STICK), shorthopping, floating with Peach etc etc etc. Reverse Fsmash just feels impossible, I always tilt :l.

Oh my dear C-stick, where are youuu?

Quite well, actually.

The demo got kinda awkward, but once I changed the buttons to what I'm used to and turned tap jump off, the game's really been playing like a dream. Sure it's not as comfortable as a controller (it's a freaking awkard rectangle) but I don't ever find myself wishing I had a stick instead of the slide pad. And most certainly don't wish I could play with the d-pad, still don't understand why asking for that is even a thing, Smash is just designed around analog inputs.

So yeah, been doing well, only thing missing is a right stick/pad, but it's not such a big deal.

While I'm used to having a C-stick to do some smashes, mainly dair's and whatnot, I'm finding it very easy to adapt to the controls (Playing on a regular 3DS). I have fairly small hands so that helps being comfortable while playing. Like others have said turning Tap Jump off really helped with my up-tilts. Definitely enjoying the controls so far.

the abxy layout on the standard 3ds is difficult to adjust to. the lack of a proper z button is annoying.
and i continuously reach for a non-existent c-stick.

Funny thing about that, I ended up sticking with the default controls. It works.

Haha.... I had the same problem, it took me about a week to get Megaman's up tilt to work 100% of the time 60% of the time. Game finally drops and I'm doing fine with the default controls. I'll probably get around to turning this tap jump if it's working for others.

I'm honestly not having any problems...I haven't made any changes to the controls, just left them as default, and I'm doing just fine. I guess occasionally I end up jumping rather than tilting during some of my tilt attacks, but it's not often enough to annoy me. That being said, I am looking forwards to the Wii U version, and having a real controller.

X,B=Jump
Y=Grab
A=Smash
R=Special
L=Shield

Flawless to me. Transferred my method of playing on Wiimote+Nunchuck (favorite) to here. Will be doing the same layout for Wii U's gamepad.

i feel like im the only one that never used the C-Stick before. I always found the delay between moving my thumb over to the C-Stick to be worse than just smashing normally.
Have to admit, tilt-jump is ******** and always has been lol.

I'm using the default except with tap jump turned off, and for the most part it's working well. I still mess up directions on the control stick at times, but more practice should fix that. My biggest issue now is I haven't played console games much in years and my thumb is sore from using the control stick so much.

I didn't think I would ever adapt to having Tap Jump controls off and using a button to jump, but luckily I did and man does it help with my play.

The controls are perfectly fine to me. Perhaps it is because I didn't play Melee that much, so I never got used to a Gamecube Controller.

Lack of c-stick whatever doesn't bother me either.

After turning off tap jump, the only problem I have with the control is the lack of C-stick, which is making it difficult to do some smashes. I am adjusting, however, so I should be used to it eventually.

I had to spend several hours dying constantly in the demo from Sding because of the button layout, then I got used to it and spent hour sding in the full game after changing the buttons to more resemble the GC layout. I'm about to change grab to Y since my triggers are breaking and I'm not using Zair as Lunk often because of that

Jump on A and B, Attack on X, Special on Y, Grab on R, Shield on L. Tap jump off. Nintendo pretty much had all of my preferences backwards.

At first, I found it extremely awkward controlling Peach's floated aerials with the default controls. I could not do what I wanted to do for the life of me. I currently have my Jump button switched to A though and my Attack button switched to X. It feels WAY better. Still took some getting used to but at the moment, I feel very comfortable with the controls.

Aside from the odd misdirected special which happens as a result of the full 360 degree motion capability of the Circle Pad, I've had no issues, even back with the demo.

Aside from giving me Carpal tunnel-like feeling in my hands through excessive play, the controls are workable but would go with controller in a heartbeat. I was using the original normal size 3DS which made my hands feel really cramped compared to a XL. Note to self, never early adopt anything ever again.

As for the 3DS layout, the joystick isn't always pin point accurate where sometimes it may register me doing a side B when I try to do an Up B simply because I pointed slightly diagonally. The feeling is like going from mouse and keyboard to a controller in a First Person Shooter game. The 3DS controls will never have the precision and the C-Stick hotkeys as a GC controller.

After 12 hours of play today my hands hurt a lot but the controls are good for what the 3DS can offer.

Not enough options in the poll so can't vote. I don't hate it but it really does limit player's potential. Not because of the C-stick, I don't ever use it anyways. But sometimes the input isn't what I wanted to do and it hurts my hands after hours of play. I need a Gamecube controller.

It's the best they could have done and it works very good except for above points.

Just fine. It's about the same as the GC controller for me other than missing the shortcut for Smash attacks and having to use R+A for grabs instead of just Z (I know there's L, but it's a pain in the ass to dedicate a finger on it).

They work well enough for me, and I haven't had any hand pains either. I have a little bit of a hard time doing smash attacks rather than normal ones, but that's kind of because I'm afraid to be too rough on the circle pad. Otherwise, it was really quick to get used to, and it feels pretty natural on the original 3DS after 8 hours of playing.

About the same as GC controller!? WTF? x_x
I almost never grab with Z so that's not an issue for me and I don't find it hard to use L.
