Hot take, brawl is the worst official Super smash bros game yet

I know this is probably the wrong place to talk about this, but here goes.

Back in the 90s, I wanted a crossover with Mario, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Link from The legend of Zelda. Then I learned about Super smash bros which had Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, and Kirby, but no Mega Man. Then came Melee which added more playable characters, but still now Mega Man. When the Wii was new, I learned that although Mega Man started out on a Nintendo system, he belongs to Capcom rather than Nintendo. So, I almost accepted the possibility that Mega Man will never be playable in the Super smash bros series. Until brawl announced Snake. Snake doesn't belong to Nintendo. If Snake of all characters can be playable in Smash, surely Mega Man will finally be playable too, right? But some jerk on Youtube told Me Mega Man has been in enough crossovers already. I didn't ask for Marvel vs Capcom. But still, imagine all the 3rd party characters we could get. Mega Man, Proto Man, Roll, maybe Sonic, Mitsurugi from Soul calibur, or maybe Bartz from Final Fantasy V with the ability to summon Bahamut for his final smash. However, I read that brawl will only have no more than 3 playable 3rd party characters including Snake, which meant brawl will only get up to two more playable 3rd party characters. I remembered a cartoon from my childhood called Captain N the game master, and three of the main characters were Simon, Kid Icarus aka Pit, and Mega Man. Pit was already confirmed for brawl, so I was hoping they would use a Captain N reunion as a reason to have Mega Man join brawl. Then I saw a flash animation by Jerry Jackson who wanted a crossover between Mario and Sonic. And I was like "That would be stupid. Why would they waste a 3rd party slot on Sonic when we can reunite the Captain N trio? Besides, didn't Sonic try to kill Nintendo?" Then we got Mario & Sonic at the olympic games. I was frustrated at first, but then I was like "There, we got a crossover with Mario and Sonic. Now can we PLEASE reunite the Captain N trio?" But no. We got Sonic in brawl anyway. So, I gave upon Simon since I didn't grow up with him and we have a Konami rep in brawl anyway, and I hope the third and final playable 3rd party character in brawl would be none other than Mega Man. Brawl was released, and who was the third playable 3rd party character in brawl? The answer is nobody. All we got was a character from an M rated game that barely has anything to do with Nintendo and Nintendo's former rival who just had a crossover game with Mario already.

Luckily, Mega Man joined Smash eventually as well as Simon, and I hope we never get another official Super smash bros game with more Sonic reps than Mega Man reps ever again.

I personally would dare to say Smash 4 is worse.
But maybe its cus I never owned it so its the one I have the least playtime on.
My person rankings would be: Melee, Ult, Smash 4, 64, Brawl

Anyway, Brawl gets by on its fantastic 1P content. Sorry, but Smash doesn't ALWAYS need to cater to multiplayer, especially not eSports.

I agree that Brawl is the worst Smash game, but these reasons are... I don't get it. It's based entirely on the roster (doesn't effect game quality) and itself in completing groups mentality (not even a valid way to look at rosters on their terms) and console war grudges that predate 9/11 (that seem to have manifested into their own seperate grudges that have outlived Covid. - I don't really see why completing the Captain N cast is any more important than completing the You Cannot Beat Us quartet. (Smick would be sick though lmao)

Honestly, I'm impressed. Like genuinely.

Brawl being the "worst" in the series isn't a hot take at all. In fact it's pretty common.

The reasons for that are commonly attributed to the game's slower speed and overall game feel.

But this? Definitely wasn't expecting it.

The entirety of this is based on Brawl being the first game to have third parties but not having Mega Man. And most everything else is a bunch of outside factors that have nothing to do with Smash at all.

You don't like Brawl because you really like MM and convinced yourself MM would be in the game based on a bunch of unrelated factors. And then he wasn't.

So, in the end this is indeed a burning hot take. At least we have the blue bomber now though right?

We can all understand being disappointed when our expectations aren't met, but you have to admit that it's a bit of an unfair assessment of Brawl when the one building that expectation for you was, well, you.

And please don't do the whole "you people" thing like we're trying to antagonize you or something.

I mean it's true, most of probably won't fully understand, not for lack of trying, but because the through line of logic doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Look, nowadays I still find a reason to go back to brawl, and that's Subspace Emissary.

I have literally no reason to return to Smash 4 or Smash 64. I can forgive Smash 64 because it was the first smash and all that but Smash 4 just feels like there's nothing to do.

I have nothing to add. This post sums up my opinion perfectly.

Of course Brawl was bad for eSport, nobody would deny that. But damn, that was a fun game in terms of 1P contents.

The problem I have with Smash 4 is that the game is centred around fights and... that's it. There nothing more. At least, gives us a Adventure mode based on Melee with 'intnedl-themed levels.

Luckily, Mega Man joined Smash eventually as well as Simon, and I hope we never get another official Super smash bros game with more Sonic reps than Mega Man reps ever again.
You'll probably not gonna like what I'm going to say but Sonic is far FAR more popular and important for the history of Nintendo than Mega Man will ever be. There is more chances to see another Sonic reps than Mega Man.

But tbh, I don't know why you opposing Sonic to Mega Man. As if Mega Man didn't make it to Brawl because of Sonic. Isn't it kind of childish?

Seeing the comments online nowadays, it’s not really a hot take. Its competitive scane being bad has affected its reputation to an extent.

At least Brawl has its single player content which notably includes Subspace. Also has the most modding potential.

I personally think the worst game (non of the games are actually bad) is Smash 4 since it has the least reason to go back to and it’s essentially the middle child of Brawl and Ultimate. Online is gone and Smash Run is the only memorable mode. It’s competitive reputation was affected by Bayonetta and Cloud.

As a Wario stan, I can pretty safely say that I think there are no good official Smash games that also have playable Wario, same is true of Pac-Man and Duck Hunt and ROB, Daisy, Sonic, Lucas, Piranha Plant - a lot of characters I really like.

Individual characters just do not matter once all is said and done, they're one of many pieces that contribute to a game experience, and it's valid to have opinions, even strong ones, on them - but they are not doing any lifting once the marketing's done it's job and you're actually playing, and shouldn't impact your overall assesment of game quality from their mere presence or non-presence.
