This is taken from the Wikipedia article on S2 Games, the developers of Savage and Savage 2: A Tortured Soul.

"...staff members have informally declared on the same forums that S2Games was indeed developing a third title, and confirmed it is not Savage 3, and will only release further details when the project is near completion. However, it has been confirmed that the game, which is currently in a closed beta, is heavily based on the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients (DotA)..."

So, to sum it all up, HoN is a DotA clone that has better graphics, better sound, includes Savage and DotA characters and is currently only in closed beta.

Personally, I have never played DotA, but I made it into the beta of HoN. I've played Savage 2 a lot, which is an RTS, 3rd and 1st person shooter combined, but never anything like HoN. I absolutely abhor Diablo, and originally thought this game was going to be like it. I was so wrong.

HoN takes some serious strategy. If you charge your hero directly into the fray of an enemy hero, you'll be dead in half a second. And no, I'm not exaggerating. The hero classes have special attacks that deal huge amounts of damage, or can hinder you in some way that will allow another enemy to rip you to pieces.

I can't stop playing this game. It's addicting, fast paced and the community is rarely rude or obnoxious. If you want to try to make it into the beta, you can add their page on Facebook through this link.

Did I do good on a first thread? ^-^

If even half of the DotA community picks up this game, expect that to change very rapidly.

This game looks pretty interesting though, despite being seemingly just an upgraded DotA.

I am in the beta. It's pretty fun, but I need to learn stuff like, "how to play." It's different than other DotA games I have played.

I haven't played since I made that post. It got old for me because other players can dominate me seemingly without trying. I usually play Swiftblade, Pyro or Moon Queen. The voices of the characters are horrendously annoying after you hear them say one thing.

It costs $30 here soon. I'm not going to pay for it. It's not worth it for me. Paying $30 to play every once in a while and get owned? Yeah, I think I'll buy something else.

lol

being a one-dimensional player in pubs doesn't really help your case (same in high level games, but you get a little more leniency there because your team can draft around your playstyle, assuming that it'd be worthwhile for them to do so)

S2 has a lot to do in terms of actual gameplay balancing, since its missing about 50+ heroes that DotA has, and many of them like necro/lion fill in key roles that heroes in HoN currently lack

also it probably won't be released for another half a year (and that's a generous estimate, it'll probably be closer to 1 year before the actual release)

and one last thing; if games get old for you because you suck (and aren't willing to put in effort to improve), then you're going to find yourself skipipng around from game to game rather quickly. it's more understandable here because all DotA related games have a rather high learning curve (not to mention the community ****ing sucks when it comes to helping out new players), but still

Succubus ftw.

Only complaint I have about it so far is Magmus is way stronger than SK, and seems to come down to which team has the most tanks.

Also, Magmus + earthshaker = Give up. You will not win.

sandking's slightly stronger because of how his stun works, but otherwise he's about the same every since they fixed the problem with stun->epi being un-cancellable

es is considerably weaker since aftershock aoe sucks terribly, and you can phase right through fissure

but yea there's a considerable lack of cc/gankers

needs puck lion necro bm and stuff like that to diversify gameplay

good thing they're adding in vs/spec next patch

Who needs fissure? Mag jumps in, ES walks in and ults while Mag ults = 5 dead heroes.

?

fissure was ES's only other strength besides echo early; the stun has decent aoe, nice range, and can physically cut people off

and no decent team that knows how to position will get ALL caught by magmus stun, let alone have ES walk in and echo slam right after

why do you tink ES needs dagger as part of his core itemset

In all reality, the game already has a $30 fee going on. I don't think it's mandatory, but it may become so. Or it may be another Savage 2 where you pay for extra(useless) features.

And I don't "suck". Nowhere close. I actually just played today and was the top in the match. And hell, I played Swiftblade. And you're right, I don't like games with high learning curves. I generally play FPS's, 3PS's or RTS's. The first week or two of the HoN beta was a lot different than it is now. Now it gets way too serious and people don't care to explain anything. I had a few people helping me out the first two days I played. Now it's all "GTFO NOOB"(Actual quote).

I don't like games where people flame you for not understanding the game as well as them. It's stupid and ignorant. I never do that to people, and it really blows knowing that I can't count on almost anyone else to do the same. It drives people away and for no other reason than their inability to be patient. If you're "high tier" then stay away from the newbies. Don't be a douche just because you have some superiority complex.

Trying to find a helpful person in HoN now is like trying to find a game of Gears with no lag. Unicorns don't exist.

I'm a helpful person :s

And by the way, being the "top" in a random game doesn't really mean anything; it really doesn't. But yeah, the DotA community is known for being notoriously bad-mannered, and the releasing of a lot more beta keys essentially granted those ill-mannered players access to the HoN community, and now the it's just about as bad as that of DotA's.

The majority of high-tier players in HoN (that I personally know) are more than willing to help; it's just that you shouldn't be playing in high-tier games if you don't know what you're doing.

If you're referring to random cocky flamers you find in pubs then odds are they suck.

It's also a flat $30 one time fee once it's released (which isn't for a long while).

You can always take the alternate approach and try to improve on your own by thinking about the game instead of relying on others to do the thinking for you.

I have to say I'm really impressed. I figured you'd retort back flaming me for being stupid or something. That was a really cool response, and I have to say thank you for it.

I believe it was the Facebook beta keys that did it. The people trolled until they got an invite, or trolled until they sent out another wave of keys. The community seemed to wither and die right after that.

And CREA, I don't quite understand what you're saying. You seem to imply that I don't think when I'm playing or that I'm a backpack in game, right? Even if I don't know some of the higher tier stuff, I'm still good enough to know what I'm supposed to be doing.

I didn't mean to imply that you aren't thinking when you play; just that you don't necessarily need to seek out help when you run into a wall in terms of skill.

That's true, but asking better players (or even people on par with your skill level) for help quickens the process, and there's also the potential benefit of finding out new things that neither of you would have been able to see alone from a single person's POV.

Always good to think outside the box, though.

My friend gave me a beta key. I feel bad now because I played the game, and it just is not my type. It is very well made. The graphics are polished, and the gameplay is smooth. I just cannot really get into it.

Pretty wierd thing is that it went all melee in this game, I was actually surprised when I played it, everything was really fast and conjured up a whole lot of motion sickness (for me) while playing
That's my opinion.

slightly faster paced, but that sadly doesn't mean anything when a lot of critical mechanics are still left out/not implemented correctly (every hero having amazing attack animations/turn rate/spell casting times are off as well)

one could argue that this technically makes the game "play faster," but a lot of other factors make high level HoN much less fun to play/watch than high-level DotA

also balance-wise, HoN is nowhere close to DotA

not enough cc heroes such as lion etc and AoE + dagger is too strong in HoN's current metagame (tempest/magmus/behemoth etc)

your analogy is what we'd call flawed

True True!! XD

Yeah my analogy's pretty basic but in all sense I'd take some factors back.

So I heard that there's more maps other than the standard corner-corner matchup?
