HELP! with DI

sup guys, im a big n00b so I wanted to ask exactly how does one DI hits. So, I understand there are like two "types of DI", survival DI and combo DI. Let's go with the first one. Right now when I DI hits, I usually hit up on the control stick at the moment I get hit. I was wondering is this the proper way to survival DI hits? Is there anything I should be doing differently (timing of the control stick flick, should I be using the C-stick at the same time)?

For clarification, I'd like to ask how to properly survival-DI two common hits, Falco's side smash and c-falcon's knee.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Survival DI is a term used where someone DIs in order to survive.

All DI inputs are just control stick inputs. So for instance if you wanna DI up and to the right you just put your control stick in that direction.

Typically if you're trying to DI to live you'll want to DI up and towards your enemy.

Combo DI is the opposite, thats where someone wants to DI to escape a combo. So most typically DI down and away to escape a combo.

If you're new to the idea I really would recommend visiting:

Its a great thread to get started.

hmm, thanks for the quick reply. so for example if I get sidesmashed by falco or kneed by c falcon, should I DI up+left on the control stick if I'm getting hit to the right? And do I do it right at the moment I get hit? Is there any like "optimal" way to DI cus I see the pros have like insane DI and my DI is kind of mediocre :S

Yup, you pretty much got the idea.

The best DI results when you input the directions while you're in hitstun, or in english meaning as soon as you get hit.

The longer you take to input the directions, the less impact it will have.

If you input directions when you're out of hitlag doesn't that like ... do nothing

Don't think you can change your DI when you're out of hitlag but in hitstun
Just hold perpendicular to how you're hit and you'll be fine

DIing Falcon's knee sucks because if you DI it anything but away he can probably just knee you again
But if you're DIing Falcon's knee away you're probably just going to flat out die
A lose-lose haha
Don't get kneed

I think it's the direction you're holding on the last frame of hitlag that determines your Automatic Smash DI and your normal DI. And your normal DI is at maximum when you input a direction perpendicular to the angle of trajectory. I don't think you can input anything except a tech when you're in hitstun (which is when you're flying through the air).

In short:

survival DI , DI towards your opponent.

(anti ) combo DI, DI away from your opponent / hold your control stick in neutral positioning.

Combo DI is definentily harder to learn

Because it's against your reaction to survive
But if you fight a falcon and survival DI all the time we'll just **** you :awesome:

Wait, that doesn't sound right... The perfect survival DI is to the corner isn't it? so you need some up component in there too.....

It really depends on the move ...
Doc's Fair kills off the side and off the top, so the safest DI is to actually just let go of the stick and it almost naturally sends you toward the corner blastzone
Moves like Knee and Sheik's Fair you DI almost straight up because their trajectories are so low

I did the most east cost DI today ever... I was playing falcon and recovering from below the left side battlefield edge.... took a falco sidesmash to the face at 110% and survived YES
LEGIT DI IS LEGIT

Intermediate:

The general idea is to aim for the corners through DI since that's the most distance before you die

for most hits:
DI down and away when you don't wanna get comboed

DI up and barely towards when you wanna not die from a hard hit

Advanced:

Some moves have a weird knockback, at high percents you will die by DI-ing doc's fair if you survival DI despite the fact that its a strong move. Either DI really hard to the left or right or don't DI at all.

DI DOWN if you are hit horizontal hard but you can tech the stage (tech inwards)

***Don't DI upwards hitting moves to the sides hard if the stage's ceiling is high and you won't die for sure without dying.

for example, fox's upsmash on dreamland, it's much better to be above the center stage then way off to the side.

SMASH DI- each time you get hit you can shift your position through holding c-stick or registering inputs during hitstun

use this to get out of drill --> shine, make falco shield pressure not as effective, fox up-air 2nd hit

in general, ALWAYS hold down and away unless you see a strong move coming out/ predict it

I think one of die, dying, DI, and DIing got mixed up in there haha.

Basically if you get upsmashed by fox at 100 on Dreamland, don't DI and wind up offstage when you won't die off the top for sure

Like a few weeks ago before I ever actually DIed strong hits, I would die to just really stupid stuff... now, DIing strong falco bairs at like at 140% is not even impressive anymore lol.

the things that are hard to di are just the strong hits that you dont expect... i.e. random falco sidesmashes that go under your shflled nairs or marth throwing out random tippers -_-. I guess I just need to always be prepared to get hit in those situations where getting smashed randomly is likely... e.g keep my finger ready to mash up and towards llol
