hello all, so i have been playing smash on the n64 since the day it came out

i recently decided to open up a game store near live seeing as how the only store we have is a game stop that is very small and there is nothing for old stuff

since i have been open in my new location i have held 1 tournament a halo 3, from the moment i had the sign ups i started to get request for a smash brothers tourney

so i have decided to have a tournement it will be toward the end of october

i will be having tournaments for each system with smash being on fri night gamecube sat morning and brawl sat night (yeah i wish it was only 64 as well but gotta make the customers happy i guess )

so here is my question to you guys

what are the best ways to run this tournament?

should i have it double elimination?
can characters be changed throughout the tourney?
how are maps decided?
what are the competeitive ways to play? (one vs. one? 2vs2 free for all, pro not free for all but just checking haha

any help would be great and hopefully i can get a good turn out and run a good tournament

thanks in advance for all the help :)

ps i live in Central New York if you live close ill explain better :)

A couple of suggestions:

Default first stage should always be Hyrule unless players agree otherwise. Dreamland warps a number of matchups to the point where it is a bona fide counterpick.

There's nothing wrong with Zebes, it should be an allowed stage. Yoshi's Island, Sector Z, and Mushroom Kingdom are banned because of massive camping problems. Zebes simply doesn't have these camping problems, and the acid really isn't that bad.

Whether or not to run doubles probably depends on the amount of interest you have. Eight players might be enough to have a fun little singles tournamnet, but it isn't enough to have any sort of worthwhile doubles tournament.

well based on amount of in store interest from the customers i have, im expecting around 30 players for the 64 version, but i am a new game store so word of mouth along with fliers in the 3 colleges near me would def help

and pro more for the wii and gamecube

Or alongside a big Brawl tournament. Melee seems to be dying in my area. I was at a tournament a couple of weeks ago where the Brawl bracket had tons of players compared to 7 players for the Melee bracket and 6 players for the SSB64 bracket.

But the general point is that you need to run it alongside a big Smash tournament of some kind. Chances are that a few people who are there for Brawl or Melee will see SSB64 and go "oh cool, I used to be awesome at this game!" Then hopefully some of them will join the 64 tournament, increasing the pot and making the eventual winner feel less like they've wasted their entire day.

But why would the day be wasted? He'd spend the other half of the day playing brawl... I mean melee.

But yeah... although a tournament with 64 is good, if no one plays it other than a few for the tournament event itself, then someone who came specifically for 64 is... well... stuck watching brawl for the rest of the day.

Is it just me or do a lot of random people come in here and always have to claim that they've been playing 64 since it came out?

This happens a lot in real life too. It's universal. I host a smash club at my university and people say that same line if they're 64 players... :p

You never hear it from Melee or Brawl players though, guess those games are still "too new"

yeah i am running brawl and melee tournament the next day, because sadly the demand is larger for them, although like i said i have had ALOT of people claiming to be "amazing" and have " been playing since it came out"

i own a game store as the first post said so i have easy access to all the consoles and games i would need

i currently have 4 32 inch flat screens in the store that i use for demo stations all 37 inches (one of which always has smash 64 in) and am pro going to be getting 4 more pro 27 inches for the tournament (so ill have 8 going at the same time if i get enough people signing up)

im meeting with my radio rep tom to discuss adding this tournament into the radio adds i already have running

i have not advertised anything and already have 4 signed up for 64 and around the same amount for melee and for brawl

i ordered 100 shirts to give out to help promote the tournament (along with my store im new and have only been open around 5 weeks)

the shirts say "get smashed" on the back (i say this only cuz i am kinda proud of my tag line im not normally very creative :) )

as of right now i am only doing prizes of in store gift card of 50 dollars, the tournament is scheduled (accidentally) the same weekend as a gaming charity in the area to raise money for leukemia so all money raised (aftermy costs will be put to that charity)

sorry for the ramble idk if this reads well or not im kinda tired

you might want to try to get non-hdtv's if possible. The lag might not seem bad, but when people are trying to do frame-perfect commands, any lag can kill them. Not to mension the timing for everything (as well as reaction time) is greatly influenced.

is there any setting you can do on the consoles to help the lag better?

i was looking into the MLG tvs they use for halo 3,there is supposed to be very little lag with them because the frame refresh rate is so fast, my biggest issue with getting non HD tv's is storage, im limited on storage space as it is let alone 4 big bulky TV's in my back room

There are non HD LCD TVs that do not lag. So they are very flat looking but do not suffer from the lag (as long as their refresh rate is good enough). I own such a TV.

Here is a useful link that explains things in better detail on why lag happens on HDTVs. It isn't the refresh rate so much as the TV is having to rescale the image when the console doesn't support HD resolutions. Anyways, just read the link, it is very useful.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558125

Any LCD with less than 8ms is considered "good." The thing is how they rate and test the refresh rate varies. The best thing I can tell you to do it to see it in person and watch for any blurring or streaking on the screen. As long as it is a recent LCD that is non HD it should have no lag. There are TVs that claim 2ms refresh rate but streak with quick motion, and I have a TV with a 16 ms refresh rate that looks flawless. Though the screen is sort of small (15 inches).

Useful links about response time and LCDs: http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/lcd-response-time.html

The easiest place to notice the lag is on the character select screen (of any of the three games). Put your hand somewhere you can see it (on a character is probably best). Quickly tap the control stick so that it moves a slight bit. If your hand starts to move after you hit it, then there is lag. If it started moving after you released the control stick, then there is alot of lag. If the hand seems to move exactly at the same time, then there is no lag, or you just don't notice it. Even if the hand moves slightly after you hit it, the lag is there, and will affect some people.

i ran the guitar hero test on one the TV they are all the same and it said i was 76 ms off, and i read some where that 17ms is 1 frame so im about 4.5 frames off

how bad is that? it sounds horrible haha

No problem. We're here for you :)

And yeah... 4.5 frames is terrible lol. Some things in smash 64 require only a few frame window for success, and if there is 4.5 frames lag, and someone needs visual cues to do it, then they will fail.

4 frames is horrible.

1 frame would be ok. 2 is pushing it.

Also the best way to find out if your TV lags is to play on an old non HD TV that won't lag at all. Last year we had a laggy HDTV in my dorm room, so when I'd go back to my house and play on a non laggy TV I could see a HUGE difference. Also switching from the non laggy TV to the laggy TV is even worse.

Unless the Wii has a cable that supports the HD resolution, the Wii also lags because it is not a natively HD console. So yes, Brawl and Melee do lag on HD TVs and that is an issue at those tournaments as well.

since the ssb64 community is desperate for new players i would like to ask you to have a paper with information on how to play online of some sort, so if they are interested in playing the game more they will be able to do so =)
