Sorry if I'm flooding, but GuruKid paid me for this one. I'll post the progress until it's complete.

More coming up.

Very nice preliminary sketch. :] The proportioning seems to be working. The ONLY thing I would say at this stage is, make the hand holding the poke ball larger. Fore shortening. It would naturally be a bit larger seeing as it is closer to you (the viewer). I remember in figure drawing we had to work a lot of foreshortening. You probably want to try to make that hand about the same size as the head. That would bring it forward in the picture plane visually. Other than that. AWESEOME! I can't wait to see the finished product. :] I'll be watching this thread for updates. Keep up the good work!

Nah, I'm pretty sure the forward hand should not be the size of his head. A teenager's arm, generally speaking, isn't long enough to bring the hand so far forward that it would be that big. It might need to be just a little bigger, though, iono...

Nice line work. Are you gonna add the 3 Pokemon as well, or leave it with just the Trainer? It's really nice as is.

The arm is nearly straight out and foreshortening is meant to be exaggerated slightly in cartoons. It should be a bit smaller than the head. But most definitely bigger than it is now. Also that would be the head initial head circle. The head/face and hair are bigger than the initial circle drawn for the head. I am talking about that initial circle. You can take your finger to the monitor and draw a circle just inside of the face. the hat, hair chin and cheek stick out. that circle is about the same sized circle I would draw to fit the hand inside of. The hand will end up being smaller than the suggested circle size. If it was to be as big at the head that would be too big. Also this is all just a suggestion the artist certainly doesn't have to follow through with it.

^^;;

thanks alot for the props, you guys! And an awesome critique XiaoXang, I'll keep that in mind.

The design was slightly altered to fit Gurukid's liking:

This will soon be painted.

I am really digging that right hand on the updated version. (has a thing for drawing/drawn hands XD) Definitely a tougher look to him now, hehe. Something is bothering me a bit about his left arm though. Like maybe his elbow should be brought in a bit more towards his body...? Other than that, I am liking the way it's coming out. =D

Painted in what medium?

I see what Ch!bi is saying about the elbow, it does kind of look more like the Pokemon trainer is doing a bicep stretch. But I don't particularly mind it much. Pants ends are a bit weird looking, but I'm assuming that when you paint it you will be addressing that more thoroughly, cause I know I'd probably do the same.

The first version is awesome, I really like it. <3

The second one though, I see something's off with the legs, they're a tad too short (or too skinny?). And he looks kinda imbalanced.

Thanks for the crits guys, i took them into consideration.
here's an update from last night.

modified the arm and legs. centered the nose and still in the progress. But once developed, it'll look more like a 'melee' version of PT. But i basically just painted all around just to get a feel of the final product.

Yeah, this is too good :)

I wanted to comment on this before, but I simply couldn't gather my words. You've portrayed a perfectly shaped Pokemon trainer, with a flawless figure that really, and with great success, simply feels like a true Pokemon trainer should. I don't know how you did it, but everything is balanced just right, between the form, the emotion, the pose, the coloring, the design of the clothes (although based off of the Brawl trainer), it's all drawn just so well.

Now, for the colored one. Pokeballs are shiny, metallic objects, so I would highlight the right side of the ball as it is almost completely consumed by an unnatural shadow that shouldn't be cast on it. It makes the ball feel set back, at a level even with his head, or even further back, when really, besides his right hand, it is the closest thing in the foreground.

I do commend your painterly approach to coloring him very much so (albeit digitally).

Keep up the wonderful work Kandoken!

here's another update from last night. i few minor tweaks, but mostly refining from the last one. The jacket, face and some of his lower area. Umm, planning on balancing his right foot along with his left sleeve. i'll fix up the ball and his knees later on, i just need the highlight for in the near future.

Aaaand here;s the final product, somewhat. In the final stages. I need to find a decent pic of his badge. Other than that I think that's about it.

looks good, I think though that you may have done the shoes and pokeball at different sittings than when you did the vest, cause they have a different approach? Unless you havent finished those yet?Cause the vest has a more painterly look to it, while the others have a bit more cartoony flatter look (shoes more than the pokeball)

loving the highlight on his nose, and the brim of his hat for whatever reason

I agree on that. Shoes look flat compared to the rest of the body.

Now tell us what are we supposed to do with that thread since you didn't even post your artwork over there for critique.
