Scott!'s Rules of Driving that aren't in books
Rule #1 of driving: Never trust the other driver. I'll elaborate. If you're driving along and see another car (almost all the time) do not trust that they'll do the right thing. Do not assume that just because you do everything right, you'll be fine. Their turn signal might only be on by accident. They might be on their cell phone. They might be drunk, or old, or distracted, or anything. I don't want to scare you completely, but if you get into a car and start driving and never at least think about this stuff, then you're not aware enough.
Rule #2: Driving laws are (usually) made for a reason. If the speed limit seems low, that doesn't mean go faster. It means there's probably a reason it's what it is.
Rule #3: Your life is more important than that of whatever idiot animal just ran in front of you. While it's best to not hit the deer, bunnies, and alligators, if you can't stop in time to avoid them, don't start swerving. If you hit a deer, you should be (physically) pretty ok. If you swerve and hit a guardrail, tree, or telephone pole, things get iffier.
Rule #4: On major highways, I at least feel safer when I'm keeping pace with everyone rather than driving at the limit and having them all fly past. Not that you should speed, and this isn't really a rule, but it's my opinion.
Rule #5: When in doubt, waiting a second or 10 is better than waking up in the hospital, or never. Don't try to pull out at an intersection if you don't think you can make it. Even if there's a chorus of beeping horns egging you on. They don't care about your life, only their own.
Rule #6: Don't be a bad driver. Don't make dumb choices, don't get distracted, don't drink and drive, none of it. Why? Because if you do that stuff, eventually you'll probably get into an accident. Not that I care. If you get yourself hurt or killed because you did something stupid, then you asked for it. It's the other drive I care about. Tons of people die every year in accidents they didn't cause, and if you kill or maim someone, you'll have to live with that for the rest of your life.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that driving is serious business.
