Love never blows up and gets killed.
Ghostbusters is an upcoming video game for Xbox 360, Wii,PS3, PS2. The release date has not yet been set. ZootFly, the company making the game, began developing the game in May 2006 but hit a "bump in the road" with regard to the Ghostbusters copyright in July 2006.[38][39] Dan Aykroyd told The Edmonton Sun that Universal has acquired the rights to make the game and that he would be doing motion capture for the game in 2008. It has not yet announced who would be publishing the game.[40] The game is thought to be in a Gears of War-style that is grittier than previous Ghostbusters games.[41] Due to the possibility continual copyright difficulties, ZootFly has been concentrating on developing a 'Ghostbusters-inspired' game which features many elements based on or seen in the promotional movies.[39] Dan Aykroyd mentioned the upcoming game on Breakfast television (City TV Toronto 8:30 Eastern Sept 21 2007) stating it will be based on the plot of the third proposed movie. On the 2007 Belgian F.A.C.T.S. convention, Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson confirmed to have been approached to record his voice in the new game.

Well, Ghostbusters is one of those series that has been in need of a game or something to return it to it's glory. I'm glad that the third movie is finally being produced, but I'm concerned that this might end up being a "Movie Game," most of which aren't all that good or original...

I heard that Zootfly's version of the game was canned and a new company was making the game. Hmm.

Anyhoo, a Ghostbusters game should be pretty sweet, and that screen is ****ing awesome.

edit: Joystiq sez:

The game will be created by Vivendi's Sierra label. Vivendi's videogame adaptation of Scarface has apparently sold over 2.5 million units and grossed $125 million for the company, which now claims that Scarface and Ghostbusters were in the top five movie franchises that gamers asked to see turned into video games -- wouldn't we love to know what the other three are now? Estimates have it that Vivendi spent "tens of millions" for the Ghostbusters license from Sony Pictures. Mark Caplan, VP of Sony's consumer products division said, "This brand is a very important asset for the studio, and we feel it's prime time for it to be rediscovered through videogames," No word yet on consoles, but release is expected by fall of '08, which is awfully quick in current-gen game development time.

So yeah. It's not made by Zootfly. I'm gonna wait for videos to be released in that case, as the youtube videos that were leaked of the Zootfly game looked awesome, whereas I'm not too sure about the guys who made Scarface making this.

As long as this game is put in the hands of a good developer then I expect this game to blow everyone away.

The concept there, Murray and co are onboard and it has characters we all know and love.

Now all they have to do is make sure they dont smeg up the gameplay and to not go down the path most licenced property's go down these days.

The problem is, with a licenced property it will always sell so the developers get lazy and dont see the need in making it a great game. There are some exceptions to the rule however (The Chronicles of Riddick and many Star Wars games).

Gameplay footage.

Things to note:

- There is no music implemented into the game, which isn't surprising, as soundtracks are usually one of the last things implemented into a game.
- Ghost catching reminds me a lot of Luigi's Mansion. Well, and Luigi's Mansion reminded me a lot of the Ghostbusters movies. Humph.
- Lots of object interaction, which is great to see. Tables and chairs are sent flying, bottles explode, etc.
- The HUD at one point shows the 360 buttons, so development is likely being lead on the 360.

Got the new GameInformer today too, which I just got around to looking at. Has Ghostbusters on the cover. Anyways, it says that a Ghostbusters game is coming to the Wii and PS2, but is being developed by a different team and that it's going to be cartoony in style.

Release is scheduled for Halloween 2008 for all versions.

According to the information in the issue of Game Informer, they built a whole new engine for the game instead of using something like the Unreal Engine. So they're already past the "lazy, half-hearted job" phase. The original cast is also heavily involved in the game writing/direction/overall process (one of them apparently says it's basically Ghostbusters 3, even though it's not a movie). The game is scheduled to have online for (I think) all versions.

I think (can't look at my copy of GI right now) it's being handled by Sierra, which has a decent track record in my book. I'd trust them more than EA, Activision, THQ and many of the other big-name companies that releases dozens of titles a year.

Definately a title to keep an eye on for next year (barring delays).
