There are tons of Pokemon games out there that are fan-made, but they're hard to find if you don't know where to look! This is a general discussion thread for all of those games that can be somewhat difficult to find.

If you're playing a Pokemon Hack/Mod (nuzlocking, scramble challenging, etc included), then you can use this thread to discuss those runs as well as discussing Pokemon Hacks/Mods in general!

I will try to keep the OP updated with any information about Hacks/Mods discussed so that they can be easily found.

To start discussion off:

Pokemon Alternate Evolution Hack! (Got from Nuzlocke Forums)

Features:

1. Pokemon

- This hack offers a total of 272 Pokemon from generations I to V.
- A good amount of the Pokemon have different evolutions. Of the about 100 lines in the game, 40 have alternate evolutions.
- Because of the above, a lot of the Pokemon (if not all) have revised BST and Movesets. Also, all fully evolved Pokemon have decent stats, so don't subestimate the power of any Pokemon!
- Movesets were edited to be similar to Gen IV/V ones.
- Some Pokemon have new abilites, most of them from the DW.
- There are also a lot of typing changes. For example, Geodude is now pure Rock type.
- Starters are Chikorita, Charmander and Squirtle.
- Gift Pokemon have been changed. You no longer get Lapras in Silph Co or buy Magikarp in Route 4. Also, the Fighting Dojo prize is different (better). Eevee is still a gift mon.
- Pokemon you can buy from the Game Corner are different. In order, they are Abra, Jigglypuff, Tyrogue, Shuckle, Dratini (even if the game says otherwise).

2. Map and Plot

- Plot was left completely untouched.
- There is grass in some cities, explore!
- All places you can visit before visiting the Elite 4 are edited.
- Only the first 3 Sevii Islands are accesible.
- There is a new sidequet inserted into the game. It begins at Pewter City and ends after the Elite 4! I promise the reward for doing the quest is very very good.

3. Trainers

- All trainers have edited teams. I tried to make the game challenging but not impossible.
- Almost every route/cave has at least one "boss" trainer that is smarter than the rest, has better movesets and can use items. These "bosses" are usually the last of the route, but not always. So be prepared!
- There a few extra, "hidden", trainers, that give stuff. Battle them!
- There are two trainers in the posgame.

4. Gym Leaders

- All Gym Leaders have edited teams.
- All Gym Leaders have 6 Pokemon in their team.
- Gym Leaders have more items (read: Potions) than in the original games. Also, they use hold items.
- To avoid overleveling (or underleveling) I'll list here the levels and typing of the Gym Leaders:

- Brock uses Rock Pokemon. His levels range from 15 to 18.
- Misty uses Water Pokemon. Her levels range from 24 to 27.
- Lt. Surge uses Electric Pokemon. Levels go from 31 to 34.
- Erika uses Grass Pokemon. Levels go from 41 to 43.
- Koga uses Poison Pokemon. Levels go from 49 ro 51.
- Sabrina uses Psychic Pokemon. Levels range from 55 to 57.
- Blaine uses Fire Pokemon, with levels from 60 to 63.
- Mysterious 8th leader uses Ground Pokemon, levels from 65 to 67.
- Elite 4: All members use Pokemon with levels from 75 to 80.
- Lorelei uses Ice Pokemon.
- Bruno uses Fighting Pokemon, with only one exception.
- Agatha uses Ghost Pokemon.
- Lance uses Dragon Pokemon.


5. Gary

- Gary will act like a normal trainer. That is, he will catch a lot of Pokemon, so you'll notice his team changes between battles. In fact, you may be surprised in the fight before Victory Road.
- Gary can be tough, so I also leave the levels of the rival battles here:

1st battle: Lv. 5 (duh).
Route 22 (1st time): Lvs 8 to 11, 4 Pokemon.
Cerulean City: 20 to 23, 6 Pokemon (from now on).
SS Anne: 26 to 29.
Lavender: 35 to 38.
Silph: 51 to 54.
Route 22 (2nd time): 65 to 68.
Champion battle: 80 to 82.


6. Giovanni

- He sucks in the real games, so his teams also change here. He uses 6 Pokemon in all battles. Levels are:

- Game Corner base: 37 to 40.
- Silph Co: 52 to 55.


7. Known Bugs

None yet.

8. Some tips

- Don't overlook any Pokemon, since it may evolve into something cool.
- Use evolution stones! Also, all Pokemon that evolve from stones still keep learning moves so don't be afraid (though I recommend waiting for level 30 in most cases, since they usually don't learn anything before).
- Use the fishing rod(s). There are not many water Pokemon in the grass, and you get the old rod early. I changed the fishing encounters to allow you to get decent water types with every rod (Magikarp is still very common though).
- Talk to NPC's!
- And talk to the guy that gives advice in the gyms.
- Grass below Pallet Town is a grinding place.
- Explore places to find the secret trainers.
- The trainers' levels are hacked supposing you play the game in the next order (since Cerulean):

Gary 3rd battle -> Misty -> SS Anne -> Surge -> Route 9 and Rock Tunnel -> Lavender Gary
-> Rocket Secret Base -> Fighting Dojo -> Erika -> End of Lavender tower -> Cycling Road
-> Fuschia -> Routes 15 to 12 -> Koga -> Silph Co -> Sabrina -> Surfing routes -> Blaine
-> Sevii Islands -> Giovanni -> The rest.

- Apparently, I made the hack quite hard. Honestly, I wanted to. So, if you don't like hard hacks, stay away from this, or don't ***** at me. I may have given some gym leaders nasty moves, but just face it, they are gym leaders, they are supposed to be strong without being entirely bull****.[/collapse]

Every trainer is harder (esp. Gym leaders!), and alot of Pokemon have different types/BST's/learnsets. You also get different items (the professor recently gave me 6 lucky eggs lol).
I'm also playing with a random wild poke code so my team is way weirder than a normal playthrough

Wow, last time I checked, ROM hacking hadn't even progressed very far in the gen IV games. Nice to see they've gotten as far as gen V.

There are small Gen IV/V hacks. Not much past small ones iIrc, though.

They're progressing mostly with Gen III. Last time I checked, they were adding all 649 Pokemon into one Gen III game.

You should add the Pokédex to the OP of this thread. I found it so compelling that I spent most of yesterday arranging my own alternate evolution pokedex based on that listing. Of course it's a spin-off, but I've always imagined something of the sort and it gave me just enough leverage to start doing it.

Any chance at posting the moves each Pokemon learns, or would that be too much? :p Also, since this is hacked over FR, is the special/physical split in place?

Anyways, looks pretty interesting, and I like the concept of basically giving every other Pokemon an Eeveelution xD Lots of Pokemon hitting 520+ BST too lol, probably going to try this out with a friend of mine soon.

While there are a lot of recent 3rd gen hacks that have a physical special split, this isn't one of them unfortunately. It didn't come with a move list, but if you have any specifics, I can look into the game itself and get a move list for you. I don't really feel like doing that for 270+ Pokemon though xD.

Another note: I'm sure at least a few of us have heard of Firered Omega, Blaze Black, Volt White, or Spirit Gold...

The creator, Drayano60 (that's his youtube account), has officially released Sacred Gold and Storm Silver, the next hacks in line behind Blaze Black and Volt White. They have the same ideas as previous games (improve Pokemon's movesets/Pokemon's stats, up the difficulty curve, etc), and if you have never played any of his rom hacks, I'd highly suggest them. They're very entertaining and the changes are always fun to have in a game. He makes it a somewhat new experience while still keeping it close to the original.

I'm guessing the chancey killed you? It was really annoying, either way the third gym would've killed you... Soooo much paralysis...
I'm playing it right now but I had to restart because I went into the safari zone with my bike I went off the ledge into the tall grass and I couldn't move because I was on a bike so I tried loading my old save, but I accidentally loaded the wrong one. So now I'm back to a level 6 turtwig

ok so this post isn't completely useless, i should plug a couple really useful tools for romhackers and romplayers.

YAPE: Best tool under the sun to look at stats and edit mons/dex entries/etc. As far as I know it's the only pokemon data editor that allows you to edit the EVs you gain from pokemon as well as items held while in the wild. Only works for 3rd gen and fr/lg as far as i know.

AdvanceMap: Standard map editor, but also allows you to create/alter item events. Handy in that you can also easily edit where wild pokemon can be found and the levels they're found at, and is a lot more streamlined than other similar overworld editors. Any version beyond 1.90 will do, but it's an actual hacking tool, so find it yourself (cuz that's obviously oh so difficult)...

If you combine XSE and A-trainer, AdvanceMap becomes way more useful. Edit any trainer you want very easily, edit any event text you can think of, and you can make several more trainers as well. Very nifty tools.

I didn't get killed. I just stopped playing because Masquerain Solo-locke of Shiny Gold X <3.

Personally I believe that AshGray is a really good hack. It's the way they would've made FR/LG if they decided to follow the anime instead and it's so damn hard sometimes if you want to follow ash's team exactly as it was in the show earlier on. I only got as far as beating Brock at his gym before I stopped but it took me forever since everything I had was useless against him even after I trained Pikachu by that power plant thing :phone:

It was pretty good from what I played through, although that wasn't much. The concept doesn't interest me, though, so I don't think I'll be playing any more of it xD.

So I'm playing through Pokemon Ash gray thanks to Fuelbi. I'm currently on my way to Cinnibar and here are my thoughts.

There are only 5 Pokemon you can catch before Brock: Ratata, Pidgey, Spearow, Caterpie, Weedle, and their families. This easily makes him the most annoying gym leader to beat. You can either grind Pikachu up to level 26 and 2hko his Onix with tbolt or spend a bunch of time raising a Butterfree to sleep powder Onix, pray it lasts for 4 turns as you bring in an appx lv18 Pikachu to 3hko it.

So I noticed a little too late that the quality of Pokemon in this hack are quite low, so I had to drop my standards a bit. I then later find out that it's not just the quality of Pokemon that's poor, the variety is also greatly disappointing. After Cerulean City, there's about a whopping 10 different Pokemon (and their families) you can find in grass. For once in my life, I actually miss seeing zubats.

The anime inspired events are quite short and mostly happen through dialog rather than action. The new maps are a breath of fresh air, but mostly involve travelling in a straight line fighting trainers and dodging grass. Training on wild Pokemon is very tedious since they don't seem to get any stronger/different after Cerulean.

The experience is a lot more fun if you try to use Ash's anime team, but also a lot more difficult. Since HMs aren't needed, team diversity and balance doesn't really matter. Nidoking and Kadabra solos the game.

Haha! I wanted to do the same thing, but wasn't sure how to go about it. Do you have any pointers or tips and tricks, by any chance?

While I'm not sure if they're a mod, hack, or an RPGMaker game, I've been playing Pokemon Nightmare Version, Pokemon Raptor EX and Pokemon Island. All of them run separately from an emulator, which makes me believe they're RPGMaker-made. The gameplay for Raptor EX is beautiful from what I've seen so far. Nightmare Version's is even superior to it, graphic-wise, but the amount of natural lag the game has causes issues in my opinion.

Pokemon Island takes place on an island region, and there are no badges. Instead, there is a Colosseum, much like how Pokemon Colosseum and XD were like. The higher your ranking, however, the more places you could visit, and the more diverse your team becomes.

Pokemon Nightmare is the fanon closing to Colosseum and XD, but situated in a different region, rather than Orre. Team Darkness is the villains for this game. I haven't honestly gone very far, as I was just testing to see if it'd run or not.

Pokemon Raptor EX contains all the Pokemon (Gens 1-5) in a FRLG sprite style era. So far, I think it's one of the better games out there, and I highly recommend it. A lot of time has been put into the game, so it won't be a disappointment.

I've also playing Raptor EX, though I don't like how glitchy the speed up or "run" button is. Especially when you hold down that button when a battle starts, and the battle is permanently sped up until you return to the overworld. This is extremely bothersome when you try to catch a Pokemon and can't nickname it because of this speed up. Playing with 4th gen pokemon without the physical/special split feels pretty awkward. I have 5 badges and am attempting to cross the water route from the south but it feels like my party is underleveled or just sucks since the first trainer encounter on that route is glitched and he will repeatedly attempt to battle you every time you cross his path, or simply turn around while you are in his path. At least it's good exp...

Anybody here ever checked out Flora Sky? It's a pretty awesome hack and more recent hack of pokemon emerald. Also I recommend Light Platinum and Prism.
