Ganon in tournaments

I just had a tourney with about 46 people in it; and i placed 7th ...using only Ganon for every match! lol......not too many problems dealing with the lower level players but I’d say there were about 15 "semi-skilled" to "highly skilled" players there (and 90% of them used "high tier" characters)...these guys i did have a few problems with

im very interested in getting my ganon into higher level play.....
So I’d like to discuss how Ganon should go about facing these characters that he has poor matchups against

Currently my best technique for these matches is to wait out in a low pressure game for some sort of opening in my opponent's game and then try using various (lower lag) moves with an aggressive mindset to force them off stage ...then I attempt a well timed ganon spike

Obviously some of ganon's best moves are his thunder storming and his tilts, jab, and u-air

Just curious what other tournament serious players like me thought about these situations and how you guys go about them

This is not a cry for help…just an interest in increasing the ganon metagame

That's pretty important in any competitive match with Ganon. He plays a heavy bait-and-punish game, taking his time for opportunities and then laying some heavy damage when he gets them. When you gain control, Ganon can do a good job at keeping them at his pace and on their toes.

You'll actually be using u-air a lot more than you think when you are put into a competitive situation. It's fast, has great range, great priority, and anti-airs like none other. D-Tilt is your standard poke and it's going to help a lot to punish things out of shield that are too far and not laggy enough for Gerudo.

Gerudo should only be used for punishing, be it them landing or a slightly laggy move. Don't approach with it because you will get spot dodged and punished or just straight hit out of it. Use wizkick defensively mainly, if they take to the air with short hops and they're slightly far away, bust out a DownB to snuff them and hopefully push them off the stage. A shielded wizkick is ouchers for you.

Thunderstorming is great, but good players should know that if they stick to the air, they can counter stomp pretty well. That's why you should know how to rely on your anti-air game, because Ganon has a very nice one. Reserve stomp for punishing on the ground, d-smashes, grabs, some f-smashes, and d-tilts can be met with a nasty 22% and follow up u-air. For example...stomp destroys both Wolf's down and forward smash and puts some crazy pressure on him, but Wolf's f-air and b-air will make you think twice before spamming stomp.

It takes some patience to compete with some of the higher tiers and higher players, but remember that the fancy Ganon isn't always the best Ganon.

First of all...CONGRATULATIONS. Be sure to report this in the tourny results thread in Brawl Tactical Discussion if you haven't already. You've had more success than I have in tournaments, but NYC isn't exactly the easiest scene to break into. :) I'm probably heading to another tourny this weekend, so we'll see how I FAir (get it?)

It would be good to know specifically which match-ups to which you're referring. I've found that one of the best techniques to abuse time and time again at high level play vs high tiers (Marth, DDD, Snake, MK, Falco) is to buffer or reverse buffer pretty much every aerial with a follow-up. UAir, BAir, and USmash should always be a concern for your opponent because they should not be able to discern if you're actually trying to land the hit or if you're just baiting them in to follow up with iDA, Dtilt, Ftilt, jab, gerudo, or even wizkick. I basically spam buffered iDAs at tournament level of play because Ganon has one of the most disgusting DAs in the game and it can set you up for a number of follow ups. The same goes for Dtilt. UAir to buffered Dtilt is the quintessential Ganon spacing technique for me.

Again, congratulations and keep it up.

i agree with most of that..but honestly Gerudo doesnt appear in too many of my matches

but i especially agree with what you said about the down air ...i usually use it for a retreating game and to punish on ground... it also seems to get used as a baiting move like hyperstation said

something ive been messing with lately is ganon's sex kick in his standard air. its fairly useless normally but lately ive been using jumps as a slow approach. it puts ganon in the air moving at slow speed. Then i either aeriial dodge into a tilt or use the fast falled sex kick to push my opponent away

yeah and thanks for responding with such depth

You could use his neutral air twice in the air by, the easiest way would be Y + A to another Y + A.

It's actually quite good for comboing a few heavy weights (D3,DK,Bowser) after a Up-throw..

Interesting option you may want to look into is FJNAir into a FAir, its something I've been experimenting with lately and it actually creates a very good defensive wall. The NAir pokes them away but does not need cancelling due to its FJ properties. While a spoton FF FAir has enough knockback to stop a shield grab from anything other than a perfect shield. You'll know you've done this right if the FAir hitbox comes out as Ganon LANDS making it a hell lot safer.

If you feel you're ever under pressure from a super offensive opponent I find this kind of sudden change in tactics can throw them slightly off balance as few people expect a sudden burst of agility from Ganon and during any part of the attacks you still have quite alot of movement for spacing.
