Or Ryu from Ninja Gaiden?

Ryu from Ninja Gaiden. While both series have had history with Nintendo, I don't love the thought of flat out bringing in characters from other fighting games and I have fond memories of repeatedly, repeatedly failing at the first Ninja Gaiden game.

Also, Ryu Hayabasa seems like he'd have more interesting move variety.

Zelda, with Sheik as an indie fighter. For a multitude of reasons... but she is clearly more important to Nintendo than Palutena, as cool as the goddess might be. And you mentioning the separation of Sheik just makes me happy.

Hercules (Disney) or Mulan (Disney)?

Mulan as she has strength and discipline. Also a female sword user would be cool. To add to that she possesses a mix of sword and hand-to-hand martial arts. Using a combination of both would make her unique even among other sword users.

Muk sounds like a lot of fun to use, actually. And it would be really heavy and hard to knock away, but he'd have a hard time moving as well. Still, nothing a bunch of ranged toxic attacks won't do the trick. (Besides, he's supposed to poison opponents on contact).
