So it has been about a month and a half since the move to Chicago was made for Galaxy, and I noticed that I never really got a full view of what the thoughts were from the community about the move.

Personally, I feel that the move was a success - LAN is now the standard of play even when all other connections are available. And monitoring the users, it seems that we haven't lost a portion of the community, which of course is a good thing (it might have even grown a bit). However I still know that people have issues. (A possible fix for lag/ping was found by \\$N@K3// - resetting your ip address. Instructions can be found here - http://whatismyipaddress.com/change-ip)
So I am interested about what everyone has to say.

Also, my new computer set up has prevented me from running a client on permanently, so there has been less communication for questions/answers about kaillera and the server. If it's about a specific user/admin, send a pm. But anything else can go here and I'll answer it in the thread as soon as I can.

It's all about how the various ISPs that handles your connection routes the packets. There is nothing that can be done on the server end to fix this. You can try using tracert on galaxy's ip when your ping is high and low to see where its going and how long its taking.

An example of this is the connection that Boomfan and I have to the server and each other. To the server, he gets about 66 ping, and I can get as low as 3. However when we try to p2p to each other, we get a ping of over 100. Why is this? turns out that the connection takes a different route that is inefficient and results in an increased time. You can try changing your ip address, as that has been reported to help the situation.

What? Are you suggesting that changing the IP can make your delay decrease? o.O
FYI i have dynamic IP and I can change to about 30 or 40 thousand different IPs that my ISP offers. In fact my ip changes everytime i turn on my PC. However i havent noticed any ping change ever.

Anyway, is there some real way to try to improve the routing or something like this? I mean, maybe my router gets a dumb path and I could change it? lol

Firo, i have a complaint.

In the galaxy, there seems to be tendency of incorrect lag spiking and server lag.

last night, i was playing teams and the lag got so bad it skipped on us.

we moved to west wonderland and that lag was gone for everything.

what's the deal?

Nixxon - I personally cannot confirm what \\$N@K3// has told me, but apparently changing his (apparently static) ip address reduced his ping. Maybe it's possible that his connection is taking a different route with a different ip, but that doesn't seem likely.

Peek - Galaxy tournaments might be a possibility. The only issues that can arise is with people reporting matches and stuff, since there isn't a forum available besides this one suitable for such a thing. I'll look into it though and I'm certainly open to suggestions.

Soupamario - Did you play on LAN in West Wonderland? I would try switching to exc connection on galaxy to see if the same issue occurs. Regardless, there is rarely fake lag spikes on the server - there are people who consistently not lag almost all the time. If you have a stable, direct, and reliable connection (not necessarily factors in your control) to the server there will not be lag. If one of the main kaillera servers does not work for you, try another - odds are one will. The same problems with connections comes up in every other online game, its just that since there so few servers people do not have options to choose from in connecting.

If you are sure that it is not a problem on your end, bring up the issue of latency with your ISP. They probably won't do anything, but it is worth a shot. The problem is probably not with the server, but even if it is, there's unfortunately nothing right now that can be done to fix it.

I was getting really frustrated with my ping problem (My ping shot up like crazy to the 130's ) that I just started to try different things(TCP Optimizer, etc. ) to see if anything fixed my ping. Then I found the site firo mentioned and my ping went down by 8 (now 70) and I won't lag:bee:
I don't know if it will help anyone, but hey what do you have to lose?

I dont think we've ever had a problem with reported matches.

Most people here are pretty just trustworthy, I think the only trouble makers will be those who are kaillera only. Besides you are the one in charge so if they cause trouble you can deal with it better than other tourney hosts.

But you can have your mods be judges. They can enter as a 3rd and watch(if the players dont see any change in lag) or after the game starts, they can still see lag spikes/desynchs.

I think its been fine in Chicago. I feel like i spike every once in awhile, but its probably a consequence of LAN and stuff.

Too bad the only mod is rockstar(for god knows what reason) and all the admins are untrustworthy 10 yr olds. i.e, Agent 21, LULZ.

Well, I tried to play on the server again (haven't tried since it first moved), and, as expected, my college nets have failed me. :(

I do get a great ping of like 30, and so two frames of delay, but I can't go more than a couple stocks without a desynch. I finished only one game out of like five, then got fed-up.

It was eerily smooth for the time that it wasn't desynching, which I thought was pretty cool. All my experiences on Kaillera thus far have been laggy, choppy games. Can't wait to go home to get some stable play in...

I'm desynching every 3-5 matches on LAN, which isn't terrible (but I guess I'm just used to it after playing on Kaillera for such a long time), depending on the time of day. I wonder what causes it?

It's gotta do with your internet connection somehow. firo will be able to explain, I'm sure, but it might have to do with the amount of data being transmitted that just isn't reaching its target, and once too much is lost, it all breaks down.

Surri, i dont know why you are infracting me for telling the truth. I think all the admins/mods on galaxy need to be switched. Most of them dont do anything or abuse(except frogles) and theres other ppl who have already said that they want to admin/mod.

How come I need to recheck my cheats every time I start a new game?

In the other galaxy I never had to and I don't have to in West Wonderland

You aren't alone - I actually have experienced eventual lagouts on LAN after four matches (and exc after much longer) or so. It has happened one on of my home connections, and my connection here at school. I'm not sure what causes it. It could be that after a certain amount of time the connection on that port gets reset by either the router or ISP or something, since I've found even just logging out and logging back in again resets the lag out time. Only suggestion I have right now is to re-log in every three matches or so if the games are serious. It might something caused by emulinker by unfortunately I can't seem to figure out what it is. Someone experienced with networking that has this problem who runs a packet sniffer might be able to diagnose it (which I might try eventually).

Peek - People are generally trustworthy, what I was focusing on mainly was just the pain of be able to report the matches somewhere since I'm not online all the time, but I see how it can be done. I can even add a /tourney command on the server that can link to the bracket.

malva - Sometimes on LAN the cheats don't get transferred during the start of the game. Not sure why this is, but it seems to happen to me pretty rarely. Unfortunately nothing right now is available as a solution. (This could be solved by packing a SSB64 save file with the pj64k builds we link to here).

Nova - read the first post. Please don't talk about other users/admins here. You have pointed out "abuses" against you and every time I check the logs they come from legitimate disruptions. If you want to talk about this more we can privately and you can tell me specific cases where you believe this to be true.

malva: I might be wrong, but I don't think you actually have to check/uncheck all the cheats when you need to re-activate them. Simply open the cheat window and close it, and all the cheats will re-activate.

Firo: Since I've played on servers before where I haven't had the lagout issue, it makes me think that it's a problem with emulinker. If you could get your hands on the source code of a server that doesn't have the lagout issue, do you think you would be able to diagnose the problem?

I just started getting the cheats problem today.

New server is way too good, and not just because I get 3 ping to it. The transition to LAN went smoother than expected (HUZZAH FOR US we switched to LAN!) and I haven't had any problems with lag.

Lag outs are really annoying to deal with when you're doing teams on LAN. Maybe it's my bad luck, but when I try to do teams a person lags out every 5 minutes or less.

Teams wont generally work... especially with randoms.

One morning The star king, Firo, Kabal (i think), and I where playing teams...and even though we all have good connections... even we couldn't play 1-2 games without DSing :(

I live in Chicago and although my frames and ping improved, I still desync about as often as I did on the old server.

Also, I was thinking of switching from cable internet to dsl to save money, would that cripple my ability to play on kaillera?

Ticklez: No, dsl will not hinder your ability to play online.

Teams are very playable if you can find people with fine connections. I was just playing teams yesterday with Unkown, Frogles, and Stormcow, and we had no issues at all. If someone DSs or teams is unplayable, try switching to exc connection or find out who is causing the problem. I'd encourage people not to go to another server unless it is necessary as we wouldn't want to split the community into even smaller chunks. Saying teams won't work on the server is not true in a lot of cases - its much easier to bring to mind times where things have gone wrong than when they have worked fine.

I wonder who it was in the case I presented.

My internet has been wonderful since I moved but I still DS a lot on The Galaxy and even more so when it comes to teams. Thats all I meant.

Also since you're never on AIM...whats with the BrownOut bot that posts about winning some free Xbox360...then requires us to sign up for some other forum :(

Sorry about not being on aim. I'm gonna try and work on that.

The bot by brownout is actually rose sending the messages. Its being tolerated as I'd rather not cause problems with the guys at West Wonderland. I made the message change to make it less spamy, however sometimes it appears too often and gets annoying. Rest assured it will not stay there for long.

will a 1.5mb connection from comcast be good enough to play on kaillera without lag?

the amount of traffic kaillera uses is minute, that is more than enough bandwith wise.
the question is whether it will be wifi, and whether the routing will be good.

Hey, whenever I try to connect to Galaxy, p64k says "Connecting..." and never actually joins the server. It's been happening for about a week now.. It doesn't happen with any other servers. Are there any fixes for this?
