Basically, z-canceling, or tether canceling, is using samus's amazing z-air to cancel lag upon landing. A good way to get the feel for the distance required is to short-hop, then just as you begin to fall tap z. You must hit the ground as the tether is extending, NOT AS IT IS WITHDRAWN. If you hit the ground as it is being pulled back you will actually get more lag. This helps force people keep their distance, or for you to approach. This might not seem like taking out much lag, but it's enough to get in a quick tilt, or even smash if you have really fast fingers. In order for it to hit someone and cancel lag you have to time it just right. the person in this video is doing it, but probably not intentionally.

I'm not forcing you to do this, just putting out info. Anyone have any feedback?

You get it out even faster if you cancel half way. It'll have the same range as an average aerial but it is rather fast which compliments the stun effect of your zair so you can string even more of them. The best way to do this is fastfall it whether it be full length or short length.

From personal experience, the fast fallen full range zair seems easier when doing it via shield+attack button combo and the fast fallen short range zair seems easier to do by using the Z button.

The thread Orly made discusses this in more detail: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=189556&highlight=effective+space

Full jump then down double tap a , it;s the perfect combo.
on the edge, grapple, release, grapple, repeat

One of two things has happened.
Either I was wrong, this is basic knowledge, and I apologize. I am apologizing to xXtTACXx who maturely stated my mistake, instead of pointlessly flaming my post. If this is the case I will research more before I post next time.

Or, you think I am referring to the lag caused by the z-air, in which case you are wrong, I am referring to the lag upon landing, although i may still be wrong.
