I was curious what people think about the new HTML code that is coming out

I personally am against the idea of a new HTML coming out, I am completely satisfied with 4.01.
To me, the web design profession as adapted to the idea of XHTML code, and is running with this idea of a semantic world wide web, and HTML 5 would be taking that in an opposite direction.

Links for people who have no idea what I am talking about...

Current HTML 4.01 - http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/

New HTML in about 10 years - http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html

Hm, I thought the future of the web would/should change drastically soon because of the Grid. When is that supposed to be coming? =/

CCS and XHTML are the directions that programmers/hackers/designers are taking the web too currently.

If we use HTML 5 as a primary code function than everything would go back to how it was in the 80s.

I agree with memphis, this code will have a lot of setbacks, I think the current HTML code is fairly useable.

The real underlining problem with this is that the web will completely change.

A semi good analogy is like Action Script 2 to 3
Or Office to Vista

Making it work with every browser will take forever, and the bugs will be so hardcore.

People going to school for this type of thing currently is almost pointless imo, because once they get out of school, get a job, they will have to almost relearn everything over again.

It definetly shouldn't be changed.

Reason: Major bugs, and a long time for each browser provider to fix them.
Why change it now? I mean this HTML is very usable.
I wouldn't want it changed unless it can help us to be more secure.. even then people can find ways around this. It's just not a good thing to change an HTML so soon...

It's going to happen anyway though/

Hopefully there will be a dual application with 4.01 and 5 in the same function.
It would be a lot of extra work, but having both 4.01 (or whatever new version is created before 5) and 5 in the same code would make in more universal.

That's probably the best thing we can hope for.

The main problem I see with this (other than basic browser woes) is that many people who are already learning html or have learned html now have to completely start from scratch.

This new html code seems like it would be fairly pointless.

It would be VERY buggy and making it work for every browser would be a pain :/

The current code is fine and is useable by most everything.

What is this "Grid" you speak of?

What is the point of "new" HTML?

The HTML we have now is wonderful, and new HTML will have many kinks to work out and who knows how long that will take.

Ha, it's hard to disagree with you, but I actually decided to read through a few things, and the only problem I see is that everyone is so content and using the argument of bandwagon that people aren't seeing why its easier...wait, sorry, its no easier, but it resolves some problems, you must admit. BTW I'm trying to argue on behalf of v5, but this is kinda hard, seeing that it will cause so many incompatibility issues. Being more specific, I'll focus on something like Java and Flash. Great that now we won't have to switch for the different frameworks that they have; its a plus. The negative is that having a uniform platform...we don't all use the same browser...so its kinda like trying to push people's preference to one web navigator. Not going to happen, even in the next year.

If we have learned anything, uniformity breeds weakness. The version we have currently is fine how it is, frankly. If that's the case, we have 10 more years to make more minor tweaks, and if v5 doesn't work (if it actually comes around), give it the boot. No point in using something if it doesn't serve its purpose.
