Yeah, the lack of friendlies was rediculous. I mean, if they had matches constantly going I would understand, but to run it in "Heats" and not let anyone play in between heats was beyond aggrivating. I didn't get to play m2k because of it. -__-

That's the way MLG runs things. If half the people were playing friendlies, their tourneys would never finish on time. Meet some people and play in their hotel rooms. It is the only way.

The choice is basically: run the tournament on time or give people friendlies.

Only exception really to that is turning off things for finals (friendlies were allowed though before finals).

The reason every other national tournament fails to finish on time is because the TO's do absolutely nothing about people playing friendlies when tournament matches should be going on.

I will say this. I'm am very, very glad MLG ran the tournament super efficiently. However, due to the slight amount of lag on the stations, warming up would've been very, very helpful. Playing a lot in my hotel room with 2 setups was a great option, but it wasn't helpful in helping me adjust to the lag. Now, this isn't really a "need more friendlies" problem, but more of a "ew, lag" problem. Hopefully both will be resolved.

I believe that all of these problems can be alliviated by having more set-ups. I have considered that MLG did invest $4000 dollars alone in just the wiis, but I will admit to being caught off-guard when there were only 20 Brawl stations, as I was truly expecting 64. I have never even seen a national tournament run with so few stations before, and I didn't actually think it was possible.

I'm usually very anal about laggy lcd/hd tvs, but I didn't notice it as much at MLG. I personally thought the TVs were great.

Agreed, we didn't go to MLG for a Smashfest, we went for a tournament.

Mods: combine double post lol

MLG is designed to run the tournament, and they will not purchase extra (more) equiptment then is needed to complete the tournament on time.

And frankly it was only 9 less TV's then COT4 and 2 more TV's then Genesis.

I'm with you guys in wanting more setups, but like the poster before me said: MLG is about running a tournament. Not about playing friendlies.

Even with that, it will be far more difficult with 80 more entrants if we cap at Cbus (which I'm strongly hoping we will).

Can we expect that MLG will increase it's resources if we raise the bar in turnout??

Am I the only one who really didn't notice the lag? I mean I felt it slightly, but I didn't really need to adjust to it. 1 match and I was fine. It was super-minimal.

How was MLG hooking up their monitors to wiis? I highly doubt that they were with regular AV cables, I doubt even less that they were using HDMI cables which we all know LAG. Were they using VGA (like halo3, etc)? VGA is the fastest and most beautiful way to hook up any console to a monitor, period. Who knows FOR A FACT what MLG was using. The first time I played Brawl on VGA I was blown away at how smooth and crisp it ran, it was perfect. I highly doubt the LAG issue, but please, prove me wrong if I am.

As far as the friendlies go, I love comparing Smash and Halo. I grew up in the Halo community since MLG ran H1. When I quit playing Halo and switched to smash I was DISGUSTED that tournaments took SO LONG to finish. MLG is doing the absolute right thing. If MLG were to open up setups for friendlies during the tournament, I promise it would eventually escalate to enough kids still bicthign to the point where they still want OPEN FRIENDLIES through the whole tournament. Maybe that is slippery slope some, but not unrealistic considering how most local and national tournaments function now a days.

I eventually got over the horrible amount of time it took to run a 30 man bracket in my region and just accepted it and contributed to the ****** of time. But let's not only think of ourselves...

Halo 3 is intense. Not to say it takes more or less skill than brawl, but it does take some intense warm up to feel comfortable on a different TV. This is why almost any semi-serious Halo player will have the exact same MLG setup in their rooms at home. Not only do they need to PERSONALLY warm up they also need to warm up as a TEAM. The Halo kids outnumber us 4:1, or something close to that and they have arguably LESS time to warm up for a harder game to warm up to.

MLG is too good. I love and hate MLG at the same time for a lot of reasons, but ultimately they are doing the right thing by drastically limiting friendlies for the sake of running a legitimate and punctual (to the fukcing minute, most of the time) tournament. I believe that continual complaining about lack of friendlies at MLG is just spoiled whining from a spoiled community that we are. Don't get me wrong, I love everything Smash has given me. But when you take a step back and look at everything, MLG is doing it the right way and you cannot argue that.

Find someone in the region where MLG will be and start setting up friendlies in hotel rooms. This makes the most sense, since if friendlies were to be allowed at MLG it would probably result in one-game-winner-stay style. You get a ****load more games if you try hard enough to set up in a room. I know Dallas has a most excellent scene that could/probably would provide set ups in rooms if arranged. There you go, complain less about it and arrange more. Bahaha.

tl;dr

Stop crying about friendlies and let MLG function as the professional entity that they are. The only legitimate one in the US, at that. MLG is serious business.
