'For Glory' isn't Just For Competitive Players

'For Glory' has been receiving a lot of attention from competitive smashers as of late, and with good reason. It is the closest thing to a built-in online tournament mode for smash bros so far. I understand and sympathize with my competitive community that 'Final Destination Only' isn't the best form of competitive play. I've noticed that many competitive players are taking 'For Glory' as an insult, claiming that Sakurai is not understanding his player base.

But here is the truth... this mode isn't JUST for tournament players such as the ones here on smashboards.

I feel sometimes like there is a real disconnect in understanding between casual and competitive players. Just as many casual players stereotype us as "Fox Only. No Items. Final Destination" try-hards that don't believe in fun, we tend to stereotype casuals as people who value "out of the box" settings where honor trumps skill and the word and intent of Sakurai is the holy scripture.

But not even every casual player is like that. There is a whole lot of in between that is being ignored.

It may sound surprising, but there are casual gamers that do not like the gimmicky stages or items, but still qualify as "casual". To be honest, I haven't seen many casual gamers who still prefer to play with items on. Maybe it is a common progression for gamers. I went through such a phase long before I learned about smashboards and the competitive scene. My group of friends turned off items and a few of the worst stages (icicle mountain, brinstar's depth, big blue, etc.) because we came to the conclusion that they were more gimmick than actual fun and the gimmicks were getting in the way of the true beauty. I've seen this with group after group in college. Sometimes it's 4-player FD only no items. Sometimes 1v1's only. It varies a little bit, but there are a lot of strict rule sets that regular players like to play.

So it's very possible thet 'For Glory' isn't just for us. Think first about how hard that would be to implement anyways. The community has never been 100% in agreement on a stagelist. Even after we modded a game and created a whole bunch of "fair" stages, we STILL can't decide on a stage list. What should Sakurai do to cater to an audience that isn't entirely sure what they want?

In the end, he made his decision to implement 'For Glory' the way it is. It would be nice for us to have a few stages with platforms in 'For Glory', but maybe this thread clear things up for those who thought Sakurai was just trolling or insulting us.

Yeah dude. I'm sick of people saying sakurai did us a huge favor with this particular game mode and we should be thankfull for a mode that we're not going to use.

The bit about stages could not be any more true. I've been saying that on literally every topic about this mode.

How could we possibly expect Sakurai to come up with an unobjectionable stage list when we haven't done it in the years that the games have been out? It's absolutely asking too much.

Regardless, it's true, that mode is seems to mostly be for "serious" matches between casual players, not for "competitive" matches per say. If that distinction makes sense. I do however think that Sakurai took some competitive play into consideration, especially since the Japanese meta is much more centered on FD from what I know.

I think Sakurai did make this mode with tournament players in mind, but he certainly didn't make it exclusively for them. After all, anyone can click into it. On the other hand, the online rules are very particular, which suggests that he does want legitimate competition going on. I expect that rules like the self destruct rule and what not will be stricter in the For Glory lobby.

DaDavid raises a good point that I didn't fit into my original post. Japan's Melee community only played on two stages: Final Destination and Dream Land 64. Then later, either just before or sometime after the release of Brawl, they stopped allowing Dream Land. If Sakurai was to model an in game mode after any competitive community, it would be make sense for him to model after the Japanese one.

Also, I heard a rumor that the team poled what rule set was being used the most in Brawl wifi and it turned up Final Destination with items off.

I agree SonicBrawler182. I think the mode is supposed to benefit us but also be more accessible for those who are not yet tourney goers.

The mode can be improved i'm just glad for the nod at the most but nothing wrong with asking for some platforms and stage variety before and after release.

If it's true that they'll be implementing patches, I don't see what would stop them from working stages into For Glory based on fan feedback, even if they don't retouch the FD variants.

But you never know with Nintendo...

I know I enjoy items (my girlfriend and I just enjoy a random, crazy match every now and the) but even I know I'll be using For Glory to have a more balanced, more even playingfield experience so I can practice and have some fun matches against random people. And I think that's what it'll ultimately be used for. A competetive-like environment but nothing too serious, for people like me who will probably never play a tournemant but wouldn't mind a tournemant style match every now and then (and aren't going to put random people on our friend's list just so we can bypass a couple minor restrictions).

It was a "step in the right direction" but they took it at the wrong angle. Sakurai has read too deeply into stereotypes and in such a case not really included anything for competitive players. In a sense it'd be like buying a Yugioh (card game) player the anime just because they play the card game. It was done with "good intent" but in the end if they had no interest in the anime and still have no interest you jumped the gun and have solved nothing in that case.

I'm glad at least Sakurai tried to make a nod to competitive, but I really think he should research a little before giving any more nods in all honesty, and that's not hostility at Sakurai, I just think he's been misled or led from the actual truth on the matter . (Besides that FD isn't even the most balanced stage, thanks to giving the edge to projectile users)
