so i just got back from my first 2 on 2 tourny with lucas as my char and my buddy using mario and i've noticed something.

besides the fact that we need to practice a lot more because we did much worse than i thuoght we would.

a lot of the players relied less on actually skill and more on knocking you far enough off the platform so they can simply edge hog.

it was really irritating and granted, we should have seen it coming, but ****. about 40 percent of the time when i saw a team lose, us included, it was because of the **** edge hog.

and kirby users love sucking you up and falling off the edge.

so yeah, we have a lot to learn.

if this is how most tournys go down...i don't know how excited i'll be about the next one.

I was under the impression that stopping an opponent from getting back on the edge was the entire point of the game.

not everyone is lucas, a character with ridiculous smashes to not have to edgehog. there are alot of characters that get their kills from defending the ledge and preventing you from getting back on (something they even go over in the "How to Play"). Edgehogging has also been in since 64. They even made timing edgehogs slightly more difficult in Brawl (in the sense that you can't roll off and still be considered on the ledge) so it isn't really something to complain about.

I'll go so far as to say that if you don't learn to play like that then you probably won't beat anyone that's very good.

yeah, defending the ledge i don't mind. that's a given. edgehogging just seems like easy way out to me.

Cumon man, that's how the game is. Do whatever it takes to win. That's not cheap or unskilled or an easy way out. Heck, in Melee, the game gave you a bonus for doing it.

Do it yourself. No one is going to whine about it, or no one good.

PK Cannon? wtf?

Edgehogging is not a problem for Lucas. PKT2 can get you back onto the stage from pretty much anywhere you can ever be without having to bother with the ledge if you expect them to edgehog. Lucas also happens to have pretty much the best way of edgehogging in the game with Thunderhugging anyway.

People will do what it takes to win. End of story.

Wallhugging with PKT :p
Basically, its most effective with Lucas because of PKT2s huge length. Just make sure it's the left side of the stage.

I was actually talking about Thundersliding so that you just barely go off the edge, allowing you to hit yourself back into the ledge and protecting you at the same time from enemy attacks which if they cancel the thunder makes you grab the ledge.

OK, now that you've been to a tournament, you can see how people actually play when they're not bound by silly rules of honor. Every single person does crappy at their first tournament. Not just because they don't know how other people play but because it can be very nerve racking.

In a game where the objective is to ring out your opponent, don't you think it's a little silly to expect them to not try to edgehog you? Good edgeguarding takes a lot of skill. Avoiding edgehogs takes skill as well. Get better at your edge game, and the game becomes better. Kirby and other characters can suicide kill you. It's part of the character, learn to get around it.

Everyone gets better after their first tournaments, so if you like the game keep at it.

Ha, my first tourney brought me the same revelation. Are you absolutely certain that you are approaching training correctly? The majority of players don't, and that's why they never improve.

Also: Mario? Really? I guess I'd have to see him play, but I think your friend would do better if he found a better character.

I've NEVER been effectively edgehogged as Lucas; if I have, it's because I was being experimental and put myself in an odd place.

You're probably using PKT2 too early. I'm also surprised you're not complaining about MK, the ultimate gimper. Try dealing with his antics off-stage...

a lot people say that when they see mario picked.. but we won at least one two rounds because of the cape.

the zelda player tried to teleport and he just caped her so she appeared at the bottom left corner of the stage. in fact mario is an awesome edge garder with the fludd and cape.

You pretty much described me at my first tourny. I lost a match I should have won.

Anyways, tournys are like that. You get used to it.
