When you get the game, what would be the first thing you would do in the game? Take a shot in some single player, events, training? Or go to VS. and do random matches? Or would you go online and play matches? Maybe you want to start hunting for some unlock able characters?

I would start off playing through the entire starting roster a couple of times in VS. matches and then I would start unlocking characters.

Smash Run is the only single player mode in 3DSmash right? That's probably where you're going to unlock characters then.
And that can be vs.
And online.
...so I think I'll choose all 4.

It really depends. If there are unlockable characters then the first thing I will try to do is get that tedious work our of the way, along with unlocking stages if those are locked as well.

If all characters are unlocked from the beginning though, then training to find the character the best clicks. Then unlocking stages, if they are locked. If not. Then just stick to training and mess with what I can do in the game.

I thought it was a multiplayer mode

I am going to purchase the game with my sister; as such, we will most definitely play some versus matches to become accustomed to every veteran and newcomer available at the start. We will be passively attempting to earn some of the easier characters.

Firstly, i'm going to have a couple of blind matches with a friend, that'll be the first thing we'll do with the game, then i'll try out the rest of the characters.

It seems obvious, but I forgot to mention it. Whenever we get a new Smash, I really enjoy going through the stages, all of the stages, in the order that we most anticipated them. It is really fun trying a stage for the very first time. That novelty wears off fast, but it is always there, in the beginning.

I thought that too...
Smash Run IS a multiplayer mode as far as I know. it says it on the Smash Bros. wiki, and I think I heard Sakurai talking about it in the direct video.

Anyways, normally whenever I get a new Smash game, I tend to unlock as much as I can before going online and whatnot, so that will probably be the case with this game.

Vs mode. I check what characters i get, play on the stages, see if the controls are okay, unlock characters, then go online.

I'll spend a few minutes in training mode to get used to the mechanics and some characters, after that I'll be unlocking all characters and stages cause I'm OCD like that and I can't stand to see incomplete rosters.

I'll almost certainly be doing some form of single player mode first. I wouldn't want to go online until I'm more comfortable with the characters, and most of my local friends are still on the fence about getting the 3DS version or waiting for the Wii U title, so VS might not be an option. While I'd expect to unlock a character after beating Classic for the first time, I'm not going to go out of my way to unlock characters at first. I'll try out a couple of my old favorite characters and one or two newcomers to get a handle on the controls and then give Classic and other one player modes (like Event) a try. Assuming you can do Smash Run against computers, I'll also likely play that a few times early on.

I will probably start off on the single player mode and then do some versus with my friends who are planning on getting it

I think I'll just be overwhelmed and stressed by my inability to choose...

It's Animal Crossing all over again

Depends on where I'll be. If out and about with friends/get online immediately, then play multiplayer. Otherwise I'm interested in trying out everything first.

Like with Barlw, I'll be trying out my most anticipated character first (In Barlw, it was :pt: and :sonic:)
Then I'll use them to unlock some characters, trying to get some out of 'order' because dammit, I want Lucario.
I'll start online maybe after 30 or so minutes to test my luck against everyone elses.

Single player modes just to get accustomed to how the game plays, and afterwards, I'll start trying to unlock the characters. From there on out, I'll decide who I want to main.

Unlock everything, and whatever that might entail. Here's hoping it's just characters and not stages as well, because I kind of like having all my stages right off the bat.

I will play a couple vs matches to get a feel for the mechanics then go right to For Glory mode to get an early jump on the points ranking system.

After that I will unlock everything.

I'm thinking I'll just hop into some matches or training with Zelda then focus on trying to unlock the newcomers.
I really want to try Rosalina and Wii Fit Trainer.

I'm not even sure where to start... I think my buddies and I will get it at a midnight release, and then we're probably gonna play tons of VS matches and try different characters.

Training mode to try out anyone that looks cool or revamped characters. (Bowser, Zamus, etc.)

I'm going straight to versus to get a feel for the stages and whatever newcomers are available. Once I learn the ones I want to an okay degree, I'll get my revamped vets down pat, while unlocking anything that needs to be. Then, it's For Glory mode.

Sounds about right to me. Once I understand my chosen main's moveset, I want to jump right in to the competitve scene.

I'll probably do a few matches on my own to get a feel for the game, then do some online matches, then start unlocking characters.

Definitely explore the menu system, change the options, then start unlocking characters and stages by whatever means required.
