Anybody remember this game? I started playing it again today. That's probably a HUGE mistake considering I have a 20 page rough draft due on Wednesday for political science. Whatever.

If you're wondering, I have an NES emulator on my computer. Although it would be cool to bust out a nintendo and play it on that.

Anyway, I decided to try do a Fighter/White Mage party and let my other two die off at the beginning. It's definitely...interesting to say the least.

I've never really finished the first Final Fantasy.
The game didn't interest me that much.

Usually I end up playing Dragon Quest instead.

I played the GBA remake of FF1 before the original NES version (which I did not play on an emulator...I used virtualnes.com lol) so I was spoiled by modern conveniences like collective MP and not whiffing an attack if your target dies before you hit him. Still, I love the game and I've done a ton of runs with different parties, LLGs, Early Class Changes, etc.

My first run of an all one class party was 4 black mages which was made a lot easier by the extra dungeons. In all honesty, aside from the very beginning and the final boss, it wasn't too bad. On the other hand, I did play the 15 puzzle like a million times so that probably helped. I also did a 4 fighter run but I don't think I finished it because it got too easy.

Right now I'm working on a red mage solo run. I'm planning on doing 15 puzzle again and getting a class change. Thoughts?

Played it, beat it, never did any of those "custom runs". Overall, it might have been good for its time, but coming from someone my age, I'd rather just play a newer FF.

That party is too easy.

Try a solo THF run. But do your paper first.

I did a thief solo one time. It was ****ty. I would get to Astos and die immediately by his stupid Rub. And if I somehow managed to get by that, I would still die later when he'd try it again. Because thief has a junk weapon that early, I had to level my guy up to 27 or something before I finally beat him. It was soooooooo painful.

Do they have the Cockatrice Claw as an item in the NES version? That's what I always used whenever I was doing challenges. You can get them off 15 puzzle.

Cockatrice Claw? I don't remember that. What does it do? Btw, I thought the 15 puzzle only gave 100 gold or something.

Plus, you mentioned doing the class change and the puzzle? Were those two separate things?
I approve of class change. But what does the puzzle have to do with that?

The 15 puzzle makes the GBA version (which is already easy due to being able to cast spells through MP) too easy.

For instance, Red Fangs obliterate Lich in like 1 hit and you get those from the puzzle.

Yeah, in the GBA version the puzzle is good for item grinding.

Cockatrice Claw casts break on an opponent.

Yeah, the even numbered ones are hit (IV, VI, X) or miss (II, VIII and XII imo) but the odd numbered ones are consistently good. Weird how that works out.

Yeah, I know a lot of people liked VIII but it just wasn't my thing. It wasn't a bad game, it just didn't measure up to the others in the series.

Actually... I think the majority of FF fans hate FF VIII.
I, however, like it.

But yeah, Junction System was broken.

FFIV was my favorite before I played FFVI and FFX. FFV had a really good job system but the story was forgettable.

Tool-assisted Speed run

Lulz...this is not in any way possible for real life.

If any of you are bored enough to watch some/all of it, I think what's funny is when he runs around in circles sometimes like on the ship and in the ice cave. I assume this is because of the way Final Fantasy 1 was created algorithmically. In playing this game with an emulator, I've noticed that if you save a state and die and then go back to the save state, things will pan out the same way (ish?)
For example, I ran into Warmech (1 in 64 chance of this happening) one time while on the way to fight Tiamat and died. So I loaded the save state and the exact thing happened again. I could believe I ran into Warmech again. And it happened again. I'm guessing the person who made this ran into that same problem and kept dying by something and had to run in circles so he wouldn't keep running into a fight he'd lose.

It was also funny that this person ran into Warmech lol.

Why would you need to do a TAS of an RPG as opposed to a regular speedrun? Just to cut out random encounters?

If you look at the TAS speedrun of earthbound you can see how shortened it is. You can also make it so that you always land critical hits.

It's basically impossible to beat the game with only a Knight in FF1. You'd run out of heal potions. Even if you're level 50, the highest level. This guys beats it with a level 14 fighter. Not even close to possible. Every random match he runs into he runs and it is successful and he never tries to level up. He only levels up by beating bosses. Each boss always misses and he always gets critical hits. Pokemon is a pointless RPG to do. The WR for pokemon red is like 2 hours and the best TAS is like 1 hour 20 minutes. Not much difference. This one is actually cool because it is SO unrealistic. A real speedrun would take soooo many hours.

What the guy does in the movie is replicable in a real non-TAS speedrun, it'd just take longer with a lot of reloading and resetting. That Bane Sword killing Marilith, Tiamat, and Chaos thing is possible. You'd just have to be extremely lucky.

Well the unfortunate thing about FF1 is that you can't save in a particular spot. You can only save at an Inn. So you couldn't theoretically save, reset, reload, etc.
