Famitsu article: Animal Crossing protagonist confirmed?

FAMITSU: Have you been approached to contribute Animal Forest elements for the new Smash Bros. game?

KATSUYA EGUCHI: Yes, and there is quite a funny story to it. A few months after E3 2006, (Masahiro Sakurai) contacted me and asked if I'd like to develop possible Animal Forest ideas for Smash Bros. Originally, we settled on just a quick, simple Animal Forest item, but with the success of Wild World and the Animal Forest film, he asked if I'd be up for designing additional elements. [Laughs] Fast forward a few months and I had stage and character concepts created. Sakurai chose his favorite of the stage concepts, slightly tweaked it to his liking, and we together decided on the final Animal Forest character, which is a very fun character to play. With both the stage and character I utilized ideas from the games. For example, if you play the stage at night, the sky will be dark. If you play in the winter, expect to see snow, and leaves in the autumn time. And yes, trees will be decorated on Christmas! It's really something else. I worked very hard on this one little stage! [Laughs] The Animal Crossing character is very much like the one in the games. You know, he will use his axe, fishing rod, bug catching net, and everything else from the games.

Whether or not this information is credible is dubious, however it does seem plausible now that Resetti has been de-confirmed today. Thoughts?

It is very interesting, to say the least, and very plausible, considering the Animal Crossing icon being used for AC related updates, when other updates relating to NPC games had the smash logo.

Ultimately, we'll have to wait and find out!

I say chances are high that he will be revealed tomorrow or Friday. Think about it. There are already bunches of information pointing to him, such as the items, assist trophy and stage. Also, why would they have a stage selectable and items useable from the very beginning if the character repping that series isn't playable from the beginning?

i think falcon will be revealed since they showed dr stewart as a trophy. i think so because they didn't show his face so maybe that could be a hint.

Because Animal Crossing is getting so much representation. They've got an item, an AT, and a STAGE. It would be silly to use the Smash icon for a franchise that is getting so much rep. The reason Sim City and that Devil game aren't getting icons is because they aren't being rep'd as much.

I do think an AC character is likely, but I won't get too sure about it until I see a Sim City stage or something, because Smashville is a big enough addition to warrent an icon all by itself.

No. We highly suspect that there will be an F-Zero character and an Earthbound character purely because past precedent tells us there will be. Nothing is known, and the icons are irrelevant. They don't prove a thing.

I'd say the Animal Crosser is truly most likely at this point. The idea of taking a character out of the background still seems plausible to me though.

No... it's because Animal Forest is the name for the game in Japan. Any Animal Crossing fan knows this, because AC originally started on the N64 in Japan which was called "Animal Forest".

That's just the games "style" if you can call it that. Although it would be nice for them to trip out the Animal Crossing world the same way they did to some of the others (I mean, we're still pretty much lookin' at the Nintendo 64's Animal Forest visuals, just globa-fied like the DS version). They have put a lot of Animal Crossing content into the game, (maybe even every single villager), and Mr. Resetti matches all this well.

Please explain then why Sakurai skipped the Zero Gravity detail on the Lylant Cruise?
Or the Mini Bulbin on the Bridge of Eldin.
Or even the top of the DK stage and the electricity stage on Pkmn stadium 2?

Sakurai can skip details and not everything has to be explained.
Otherwise you would know exactly what would happen in the stages.
