Our society has really messed up holidays that actually stand for things in certain religions, etc.

I'm Catholic (kinda, I disagree with some of the stuff that's taught) and I have a serious problem with what companies have turned holidays into. As we approach Easter, I've been thinking about this. Easter has transformed from one of the most sacred holidays in the Christian faith into just a big random shopping-fest. Easter eggs? Candy? What does that have to do with Jesus rising from the dead?

Christmas is the same way. I'm a teenager, and I won't say no to presents, but seriously, we shouldn't receive presents, it's Jesus' Birthday not ours, what is the justification for that? All the decorations etc. are just promoted by corporations to make money for themselves, and it has escalated to the point where some people are overlooking the true meaning o the holiday. Christmas movies are made annually, and most of them are stupid comedies, stemming off the materialistic aspect of Christmas as opposed to the true reason for us celebrating.

Discuss I guess.

It's society's fault for following the commercialized seasons like zombies.

Government and business are only capable of feats like this through mass stupidity.

If they'll see a chance to make loads of money, they'll take it. And they're doing a pretty **** good job.

I'd have to say that Barge and Teran are right on.

Gift giving on Chirstmas was originally intended to be in memory of the three Magi who gave gifts to Jesus, but that tradition was *******ized by the business world. It's a shame that holidays (take note, they were once called HOLY DAYS) are starting to lose their original meaning.

I don't know, I'm not religious, but I still enjoy the holidays. You get together with the people you love, have some good times, give them something special. They just makes me happy and they are nice to look forward to. Religious people can celebrate how they wish, but non religious people like to enjoy it in their own way too.

I agree with mzinkk. They are very commercialized, but on the other hand, the holidays aren't entirely money-centric. I always hate when Christmas passes because the entire holiday season really feels joyful and...it's great, really.

Rather stupid how commercialized they've become but it's not like they're completely lost.

Mhmm, mzinkk and Firus have it. Anyone noticed how Christmas trees (which aren't even really a part of the original holiday I think) are called holiday trees to get more people to buy and/or celebrate the holiday? It's quite silly. On the other hand, the holidays are usually pretty fun and are nearly always happy times.

On a side note, I absolutely hate half of those dumb Christmas movies.

A businesses only duty to society is to make as much money as possible.

they arent doing anything wrong. Its not their fault people keep on throwing more and more money at them every year

I'm not saying the holiday season has to be all religious, it is a good time for everyone to get to see their families, and I don't dispute that, I think it's ruined by the commercialization of it, not non-religious people.
