Downward trajectory out of U-smash?

Eh, so I was in training mode trying to figure out how to SDI out of Zelda's U-smash, and around 0-30% and I think a few times at 60-70%, I didn't get sent flying upwards.

At the lower %'s, I'd just "ouch" or "WHAARGHARBL" (?) on the floor, much like you would if you got Nana F-aired at 0%, or out of Dedede's D-throw.

On the few times when it did work at 30% and higher, I got sent into the floor. Mind you, I was too busy spamming control stick and C-stick at the time, but I'm fairly sure that one with better reflexes could probably tech it.

They (the trials in general) were done while I was grounded, next to Zelda. I probably got hit for the whole duration of the move, from the beginning to the end. Some of these may have been done in front of Zelda, and others were done from behind her.

So... someone explain to me...

What is this?

A... fluke? Amazing DI? Madness? Escape? Glitch? Luck? Brawl Physics/DI exploit? Sparta?

halp.

Short characters CAN DI down out of her Usmash (except Jiggly I think... because she's too floaty)

but, you have to have a quick attack because Zelda can pull Dsmash or Nayru's out of nowhere... and GOOD LORD don't DI down out of it when you are near a ledge unless you wanna spike yourself.

I don't think I DI'd out of it and floated down. I actually got launched downwards.

Sonic's tall enough to get hit with her U-smash standing anyway.

Oh, and speaking of DI, if F-smash is so escapable, how come I can SDI far through and behind Zelda during F-smash and still get launched like normal? ;__; I saw someone say that you could SDI through her and get out of it and attack from behind.

well... the Usmash is made of multiple hits which juggle up and down. they have low knockback, except the last one, but with smash DI you can go with the momentum of one of the earlier hits enough to avoid its following counter hit... so yeah... you DId out of it... same thing that happens when Sonic's Usmash spikes.

as for Fsmash... the last hit has a large hitbox that even hits behind zelda..... there you go

Ya I sent someone down the screen once when I was Usmashing someone near the edge.

Man that was a great moment!

I believe the hits have some sort of spike effect.

In Battlefield, stand on the floor with someone on the platform above you and U-smash.

They get that tripping/poking thing like the d-tilt until the FINAL hit. If you can spike with d-tilt thigh, you can probably spike with U-smash if they can avoid the final hit.

Well, Sonic's U-smash spike isn't even DI related. For some reason, regardless of DI, if you hit with the initial part of the U-smash at mid-high %'s, it launches people out of it. I'll buy what you say and go by "I got out of it during one of the downward hits"

F-smash - I'm trapped inside the F-smash the whole time. ;__;

I've never seen this happen with U-smash, but I know what you're talking about when moves that don't normally slam you into the ground, do so and you're like wtf.

As for why it happens, I have no idea.
