hey welcome to the site :)

we have a "quick question, quick answer" thread for questions like these. but since you already made the thread, I'll just answer it here.

The hit box goes a lot higher for Marth's d-air behind him, so its good to jump off the stage backwards and try it that way. The rest is just basic spacing. But either way, you shouldn't be going for the spike too often. It's better to rely on bair, fair, and nair offstage for the most part. More reliable.

Also for sake of interest, dair comes out frame 6, but on frame 7 there is an additional hitbox that is 'larger', and feasibly easier to hit with that is only up for one frame. So yeah, pretty hard to hit with :p
