Doubtful of a Direct this month

I dunno about you, but I honestly don't believe that we're going to get a Nintendo Direct this month.

I was just thinking back to April, and when we got the Smash Bros. Direct, there wasn't a general Direct, was there? I feel that the same thing will happen here that since there was a Hyrule Warriors Direct, that there will not be a general Direct for this month. Same thing happened with the Pokemon X and Y Direct too iirc.

There's only two weeks left in August after this week... What's your thoughts on the possibility of no Direct this month?

I myself feel like if a Smash Direct were to come, it would be next month before the game launches in Japan.
Sounds plausible. Many people expected them to drastically ramp up content reveal in the months before release, but I always felt like they've kept a fairly even canter throughout the main developement period. I think a last-minute blowout on the 3DS version is very possible, though.

I think since the WiiU version is going to have some of its own quirks and features to focus on (and we'll know the roster), that the WiiU-specific details (like the recently hinted battle damage mechanic that was cut from Brawl but has surfaced in WiiU screens) will be talked about in the in-between time, from October to December.

I think either near the end of this month

I'd be surprised if there was no general or smash direct any time between now & release in Japan. Sakurai definitely has a good chunk of info to deliver to us. We're not at the bottom of the barrel yet, after all.

I don't even know if we'll get another Smash direct before the 3DS version.

There is already enough information out about the game that a direct wouldn't do as much justice.
And with the pics of the day spewing out new information daily it could fill in the gaps before the Japanese release.
I mean we already know a huge chunk of the roster.
A bunch of stages.
Pretty much all the items, Pokeballs and assist trophies.
We know what Smash Run is.
We know the new target smash game.
We now know what classic mode is going to look like.
Still know that you fight Master Hand.
Miis replace polygons, wire frames, and alloys in multi man Smash.
Trophies can be purchased now.
We have the blueprint for how online will work.
We've seen the menus.
We know customization of Miis, moves, and equipment.
You unlock Mii outfits, moves, and equipment.
I'm sure there's more info, but nothing that needs a direct.
I mean what's left?
All star mode can't really be showcased without showing off a bunch of characters
Challenges could easily be shown in a pic of the day.
"Adventure" mode? (I'm 99% sure Smash Run replaced this)
And connectivity with the Wii U that wouldn't make sense to talk about until the Wii U release.

Even after the 3DS version I doubt we will get a Wii U Smash direct.
There are plenty of games coming out for Nintendo that they need the lime light too.
The Wii U specific game modes could easily be thrown into a normal Nintendo direct.

I doubt there will be a smash specific direct this month.

But a Nintendo general direct with a smash character reveal at the end seems likely, judging by the pattern.

Although, as we know, Sakurai and patterns don't always exactly pan out....

a direct would be a good chance for them to reveal the remaining newcomer trailers, as they said "They are scraping the bottom of the barrel for remaining trailers", which I assume means around 2 more trailers.

Presumably your fridge.
I dunno. They've been pretty consistent with the whole general direct every 2 months thing. I'd expect one to be announced by around this time next week.

There are 2 options for future directs.

One coming in early November showcasing Pokemon, Smash Wii U, Amiibo, more Mario Kart DLC, and the games shown at E3.

Or another one in late October/early november that's just Pokemon ORAS specific.

We're still missing event mode, several stages, a newcomer or two, obvious veterans, more details on the mini game we saw in the E3 trailer, info on Target Test, explanation on exactly how customization is applied to a character, and quite possibly several alternate costumes. Probably more if there is extra stuff Sakurai added, so there might be enough for one.

But Nintendo has been airing general directs every two months like clockwork. If you fill in their E3 show as the last one, he pattern holds that this month will have another.

I feel like most of this is pic of the day update worthy or at least a website update.

The trophy/equipment collection mini game is probably like the one in Melee where it is only playable in classic mode.
The way the stadium mode menu was presented on the website makes me believe target test is gone.
Sakurai doesn't say "here are 3 stadium modes" he says "there are 3 stadium modes".

Going off this pic of the day we can gauge what is left to be confirmed.

Going by Brawl's model we can easily assume what will be where.
Brawl had Group and Solo, but since a 3DS is only for 1 person we can assume that has all be lumped together.

Clicking on the group button we get this.

With 3DS Smash we can assume "Smash", "Rules" and "Special Smash" will be in this category.
Rotation and Names no longer serve a purpose on the handheld. Tournament I can see remaining because you could easily set up a tourney when there are a bunch of 3DS around.

Now clicking on Solo gets you this.

It's safe to assume only Classic, All-Star and Training will be the only ones.
Events and Stadium can go under another heading.

So when pressing the "Smash" button on the 3DS main menu, you get:

  • Regular Smash
  • Classic
  • All-Star
  • Training
  • Rules
  • Special Smash
  • Tournament

Smash Run and the Online buttons are self explanatory.
Wii U will probably lead to some system linking options.
Street pass will probably allow for fighting with people's Miis.
Challenges will probably work how they did in Brawl.

So now we get the Games & More option.

Going off of Brawl's main menu it's safe to assume they clumped Vault, Options and Data all together into the Games & More.
Clicking this button will get:

  • Stadium
  • Events
  • Trophy Store
  • Trophies
  • Album
  • Replays
  • Sound test
  • Generic options
  • VS Records
  • Customizations
and any other surprises they might add.
Stickers shouldn't be back, stage builder should be a Wii U exclusive, masterpieces and chronicle were cool, but didn't need to be there.

I put customizations in the Games & More subheading instead of the Smash subheading because you can use these customizations in modes outside of just Smash.
Customizations will also be on the character selection screen but this just adds an easy access area where you can switch between characters and save them easily.

So obviously I got insanely carried away here, but the point is we don't have much left assuming most of these modes return.
The wow factors and big changes have already been addressed.
So a direct would only really be showcasing new moves, outfits, stages, etc.
There aren't any huge game modes left that need Sakurai to explain them to us.
All-Star and Events have been around long enough for us to know how they work.

All very good points and a good analysis, however I doubt the remaining info will be shown in a pic of the day in time for release. I suspect a Smash section in a regular direct with one or two newcomers and remaining Smash info. But thank you for bringing up the Brawl menus. But I think challenges will return as they were in Kid Icarus: Uprising as well. Again thanks for the analysis!

Edit: nvm I see challenges have returned in the 3DS Main menu

I can definitely see a Smash section in a Nintendo Direct this month.
However I just doubt we will be seeing another Smash specific direct.

And I'm not familiar with the Uprising challenges, so I better look that up.
And based on all the Uprising modes Sakurai has used for Smash I can definitely see him going this direction.

Judging by these Uprising videos, it is possible that challenges could replace event mode.

April had 3 directs: Smash, Tomodachi and Mario Kart.

I think we'll be getting Smash Bros. sometime in the next two weeks. Prett certain of it actually.

I hate to be apart of the "muh patterns" crew, but it's pretty likely there will be a direct this month, though not necessarily a Smash direct. Nintendo has barely shown off some of their games, and certain things like Starfox U and Zelda U which are both early on in development may have enough to even be able to get a legitimate trailer in time.
That is to say, if there is a direct, there will be a newcomer. If it's a direct for one specific game that ISN'T Smash, then I can see them not revealing a newcomer, but honestly, at this point it's either Smash or just Nintendo.

We can always hope that the pattern is right, and one comes soon! We can't make assumptions since we have no real information....

To be honest, I think Nintendo might be doing away with general Nintendo Directs in favor of ones centered around a specific game. Unless you count the Digital Event for E3, we haven't had a general direct since prior to the Smash Direct if I remember correctly. Also, the directs centered on a single game have also seemed to have been far more well received than the old general directs were, in large part because of people being better able to control their expectations (mainly due to not being able to over hype the possibility of a game showing up that ends up being a no show, as we now know exactly the game they're going to be talking about). Really, i wouldn't be surprised if we get another Smash Direct some time in the next month, as it seems like the best way to reveal all of the remaining newcomers all at once and really build hype for the Japanese launch.

I have a hard time seeing a full Smash Direct before the 3DS' game release, because there's surely to be a Smash Direct after the 3DS release to talk about the Wii U version. So, maybe a general direct before Smash 3DS release with a spot for Smash? Or two full on Smash Directs within a few months. I don't know. Sakurai and Nintendo are very unpredictable. Especially Sakurai.

I really hope Sakurai announces all the characters himself, including the secret characters, because it would just be more fun to see it revealed by Sakurai than just people on youtube or whatever. But don't reveal the secret characters until the game releases in Japan, because we'll all know by then anyway, unless we boycott the internet until we play the game ourselves.

Eh. There's not much difference in waiting for a direct and waiting for the game to release in Japan. Even if we get a direct a few days before the Japanese release, it's still only a few days before we know everything there is to know about the game.

Besides, you can count on at least 1 more newcomer trailer before the release, so we'll definitely get that in the next month. Only 30 days before knowing it all...

I don't really expect or specifically want one before launch at all. If anything expect it in September though.

One of the reasons the game-centered directs have generally been better received is that they eliminate all of the awkward moments where Iwata just stares "directly" at the camera and speaks in broken English. Another reason is that they've generally contained more information that people actually care about and less Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and the like. I think a general Direct between now and the Holiday season would be good for both promoting their big holiday releases and getting some early 2015 release dates out there to reassure people that there won't be another huge game drought in 2015, and if they can smooth out some of the transitions between games and pack it with enough content, they'll be fine as far as general directs go.

What if Sakurai saying we are reaching the bottom of the barrel concerning the newcomers trailers mean two of them could remain hidden for the game's release, and the only way to see it is to unlock the characters in game ? Thus no more reveal.

Hmmmmm... Idk, I'm not doubting or anything, but I don't think they announce new Directs less than 3 days before a Direct. Or do they...
Directs are usually announced a day before they air, unless they announce it on a friday in which case it airs on the following monday.

Is it wrong that I'm anticipating the anticipation of announcements of content for an unreleased game?

I highly doubt that is the case because then we would see a leak of the trailers before we play the game which he hates. Sakurai could do that thought you never know with him.
